Eblast December 28, 2009

Personally from
Gail Dear Cindy,

The Hallers celebrated Christmas Eve by having my husband’s family of 25 over for dinner, white elephant exchange and our regular gift exchange. It was fun, funny and exhausting! Hope you had a wonderful holiday spent with family too.

This is my last Monday update for the year! As I look back on 2009, I know it was a rough year for many and I really appreciate all the support the Chamber has received from its members. It seems like its during the hard times when the business community pulls together and really appreciates the value of the Chamber and what it can do for your business. We’re ending the year 425 members strong. This year we added a total of 90 new members! Thank you for your support and confidence in what the Chamber can do for your business.

Just a reminder that the Chamber will be closed this Thursday and Friday so that Dorothy, Cindy, Marci and I can spend the holidays with our families! Happy New Year to you and yours!

Best wishes for a great 2010!

New Year’s Kid Friendly Activities! KIDWINKS.com HELPS PARENTS FIND FAMILY FRIENDLY WAYS TO RING IN THE NEW YEAR
The year 2010 is approaching, and kidwinks.com is ready with free and easy access to the information parents need to plan for a Chicago area New Year’s Eve full of family fun. Many parents wish to ring in the New Year with their children, but learning about all of the
various ways to do that in the Chicago area hasn’t ever been easy until now. Kidwinks.com has researched all types of family friendly New Year’s Eve celebrations and brought them together in one easily searchable place. The kidwinks database lists over 50 options for families to enjoy this magical evening together, with balloon drops, magicians, face painters, fancy balls, fireworks and much more:
• Have big plans for an adult New Year’s Eve? No problem – kidwinks includes family New Year’s Eve celebrations the day before, and countdowns to noon the day of.
• Want an active family New Year’s Eve? Kidwinks has details on parties where families can skate, bowl, jump, dance, climb and more.
• Want to get away with your family? Kidwinks can direct you to family-centric packages at area water parks and hotels. For example, The Holiday Inn Select in Naperville is featuring a Family Fun New Year’s Eve package that includes overnight accommodations, dinner buffet for 4, 4 tickets live theater performance of High School
Musical, kids DJ dance party, games, activities, admission to High School Musical movie, countdown festivities and more.
• Want to drop off older kids or teens? Kidwinks has options for the older kids, too – even a lock-in overnight stay through the Des Plaines Park District where kids can enjoy games, music and dancing all night!
• Want to enjoy a festive meal with the family to ring in the New Year? Kidwinks lists those too! For example, Moretti’s Restaurant has multiple locations throughout the Chicago area offering several seating times with balloon drops, confetti, party favors and
kids video countdowns. For something more sedate, look to the kidwinks Kids Eat Free Calendar for options where kids can eat free or cheaply.
Kidwinks was developed specifically for parents of young children, giving them one portal to access the countless events and activities targeted to families; not just for New Year’s Eve, but for anytime.

Better Business Bureau
Fox 32 television contacted the Better Business Bureau asking if any of BBB’s members would like to use the station's "Job Shop" TV segments for help wanted announcements.

Here's an interesting opportunity for you to publicize your business on local television - and it's FREE!

Fox 32 here in Chicago is seeking BBB members to appear on their weekly "Job Shop" segments. Job Shop is a live, in-studio segment on the Good Day Chicago program where employers help dispel the myth that there are no good jobs available. Hiring managers come in studio for a short two minute interview to explain why their company is great to work for and briefly describe what types of positions they are looking to fill.

This segment is beneficial to your business in two ways: obviously it's helpful for recruiting new employees, but it's also valuable to explain your goods and services to an audience that may not be familiar with what you do. Large employers like Prudential, US Cellular, Fifth Third Bank, and Rush University Health Center have been recent contributors to the segment.

Here's a link to a recent segment done by UPS:

Please contact Matt Butterfield at Fox Chicago with questions and to schedule your appearance. Matt's direct phone is 312-565-5588 and email is matt.butterfield@foxtv.com.

Honoring Our Veterans Honoring Our Veterans This Holiday Season

On November 19th, Lester Interrante, a resident of Mount Prospect, traveled to Washington D.C. with the help of Honor Flight Chicago. Lester served in World War II as a Private First Class in the army. Eighty-eight years old, Lester was accompanied by his son on this special trip.

Mr. Interrante received an all-expense-paid trip to the war memorials in Washington, D.C. for a day of commemoration, reminiscence and reflection. Honorees are sent off from Chicago by the "Andrews Sisters" (also known as the Legacy Girls) and welcomed home by the ROTC color guard and an outpouring of gratitude from a crowd of hundreds.

Honor Flight Chicago was founded in March 2008 to provide Chicagoland World War II veterans with the opportunity to visit their memorials in our nation’s capital. Honor Flight also works with terminally-ill veterans of the Korean War and Vietnam War. The organization wants to honor these brave soldiers for their sacrifices in the cause of American freedom.

It was the trip of a lifetime for Lester Interrante. Anyone who wants to contribute to this worthy cause or knows a veteran who deserves the opportunity to participate in the program can contact Honor Flight through their website: http://www.honorflightchicago.org/ or by telephone: 773.227.VETS (8387).

Cell Phones for Soldiers
Drop Off Cell Phones for Soldiers: We’re still collecting old cell phones. District 64 will be collecting at the schools and dropping them off here at the Chamber as they did last year as part of their green initiative.
For every cell phone donated, a 60 minute phone card is sent to a military person overseas. It enables them to call home at no charge. As you can imagine, the need for the free phonecards is not decreasing. Please find all those old cell phones you don’t need, use or want any more and bring them in to the Chamber.

Musical, kids DJ dance party, games, activities, admission to High School Musical movie, countdown festivities and more.

WSI – We Simplify the Internet With the growing popularity of social networks, companies are running the risk of losing control of their messaging and communications in today's digital age. Many have run into legal complications as a result of this complicated yet powerful communication method.

WSI has invited Lee Plave to conduct a webinar on "Social Networking - Implementing Best Practices and Avoiding Calamity". Lee counsels clients on the application of technology to franchise and distribution systems, including matters such as e-commerce, policies regarding data use and security, cybersquatting and domain name disputes, consumer complaint and social networking services.

If you intend to use social networks to build brand and customer engagement, you must know the best practices to avoid any legal implications.

We invite you to join us for this last webinar for 2009.

Perry Wein, Edward Jones: Toys for Tots Park Ridge Edward Jones Office Supports Toys for Tots Drive

Perry Wein, the local Edward Jones financial advisor, is supporting the Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program by using his office as a drop-off location for this year's toy drive.

Local residents may help needy children in the area by bringing in a new, unwrapped toy to the office, 32 Main Street, Park Ridge, during regular business hours beginning November 30th.

"With the holiday season around the corner, we are all getting ready for the festivities," Wein said. "And as this is the season of giving, now is a great time to remember the less fortunate in our community."
Park Ridge Public Library The Park Ridge Public Library is also collecting Toys for Tots through December 16.

And you can pay your fines with food for the Maine Township Pantry!

Gail's Weekly Chamber UPDATE

We’re decorating for Christmas! Our tree is up and decorated. We entertain the whole Haller family on Christmas Eve for dinner, gift exchange, and our fun white elephant event. And, with the light dusting of snow on the ground, “its beginning to look a lot like Christmas!”

Today is the anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor. My mother was born and raised on Oahu and was 8 years old at the time and remembers it very well – from an 8 year old’s perspective.

Although our Monthly Networking Luncheon is usually the 2nd Wednesday of the month, there are a few exceptions and December is one of them! Our luncheon will be on the 3rd Wed (Dec. 16 – next week) this month because our host, Rich Callahan, is on a Disney cruise with his family and returns this weekend.
This will be our Holiday Luncheon and it will be full of fun and networking! You can bring a prize to raffle off. Bring your business cards to network (and for the Spotlight drawing to be on the front cover of the Chamber’s monthly newsletter!). I have some fun things planned!
The menu will be appetizers in the bar area (cash bar available). A chopped salad and choice of 3 entres: Grilled Salmon, Grilled Chicken or Grilled Sirloin. Mashed potatoes and grilled vegetables – and cheese cake for dessert! All for just $25 if you reserve by this Friday. $30 at the door and for Prospective Members (have you noticed that’s my optimistic way of saying ‘nonmembers’??).

We are so fortunate to have local talent to entertain us! Sasha Gerritson heads up an octet called ‘Here Comes Treble’ and I heard them perform at the City Council meeting and was so impressed, I asked them to perform at our dinner! They sang ‘Mr Sandman’ and ‘Java Jive’ and it was amazing!
The Chamber started a Retail Committee this year. The Committee Chair is Linda Hills, owner of Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory. The Retail Committee sponsored AutumnFest and there are a lot of other projects to be undertaken but we need your input (especially all the merchants and retail stores in Park Ridge!)
Can you take a moment to take a short survey please?
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/ZNQJ5S9

I haven’t written much about the Cell Phones for Soldiers program lately but we’re still collecting your old cell phones.
JoAnn Arnswald at mb Financial Bank has been my single biggest contributor of cell phone with District 64 running a close second!
For every cell phone donated, a 60 minute phone card is sent to a military person overseas. It enables them to call home at no charge. As you can imagine, the need for the free phonecards is not decreasing. Please find all those old cell phones you don’t need, use or want any more and bring them in to the Chamber.
I spent 5 ½ years in the Air Force and though I was stateside the entire time, I did go to military bases where I didn’t know anyone and it was sometimes very lonely. That was back before cell phones, email, phone cards - and long distance was expensive. My heart goes out to all our men and women serving our country – and their families who miss them so lets do what we can to help them stay in touch.
For more information on the program, go to:
www.cellphonesforsoldiers.com

With the growing popularity of social networks, companies are running the risk of losing control of their messaging and communications in today's digital age.

We live in a world that is filled with data. Whether you gather it, or you receive data from some other sources, often we find ourselves swimming in numbers with no way to make sense of it.
Do you feel like your boss will not listen to your idea unless you "Prove it" to her?
Do you have only 5 minutes to prove your point to a Board of Directors?
Or do you just need to convince you wife to let you buy a Hummer H1 instead of a Prius?
Picking the right data, understanding what form to present it in, knowing how to deliver bad news in an appropriate manner...etc.
All of this and more is covered in our newest class offering
"Using Data to Communicate"
December 18th 2009 9:00am - 4:30 Class price is $250.00
Dont miss out on this great topic....Just in time to help you present your 2009 Year End figures.
Classes are offered in the Technology MD Training Center at 350 S Northwest Highway. Call 847-720-7034 or email cvachlin@technologymd.net to register or for more information about our classes and prices.

Park Ridge Edward Jones Office Supports Toys for Tots Drive

Perry Wein, the local Edward Jones financial advisor, is supporting the Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program by using his office as a drop-off location for this year's toy drive.

Local residents may help needy children in the area by bringing in a new, unwrapped toy to the office, 32 Main Street, Park Ridge, during regular business hours beginning November 30th.

"With the holiday season around the corner, we are all getting ready for the festivities," Wein said. "And as this is the season of giving, now is a great time to remember the less fortunate in our community."
The Park Ridge Public Library is also collecting Toys for Tots through December 16.

And you can pay your fines with food for the Maine Township Pantry!
