Gail's Weekly Chamber UPDATE

Memorial Day is just around the corner and I was wondering if you’d be interested in participating in the parade this year as a Chamber member? If we get enough interest, we can think about marching together as a Chamber with all our members. Tasty Pup said they’d love to – how about you? All kids invited to participate and throw candy – or even pass out coupons to your business! My 9 year old daughter loves being in the parade each year!

Ribbon Cutting

Frame Gallery
Last Thursday was the ribbon cutting ceremony for the Frame Gallery of Park Ridge at 157 N. Northwest Highway commemorating the change in ownership to Ron Elmgren. Mayor Howard Frimark and Chamber of Commerce board members and Ambassadors came out in full force to celebrate this long-standing Park Ridge store. It was a delightful opening with a lot of networking and lovely pastries!

If you would like a ribbon cutting ceremony for your new offices, new ownership, new location, anything new – call and let us know! You’ll get your picture in the newsletter too! This service is included in your membership dues!

Thank you for volunteering! The golf outing will be at Chevy Chase on June 24 – Tracy Bell from WineStyles has already committed to donating a wine basket for the silent auction!

On Thursday, April 2, from 8:45 to 9:45 a.m. also here at the Chamber, the first Retail Committee meeting is planned. Linda Hills, Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory is the chair. April 25 Electronics Recycling is Back!
Dick Barton, Barton & Barton, Ltd. wrote this press release for the Chamber:

Recycling event returns!

Saturday, April 25 marks the return of the Park Ridge Chamber of Commerce’s Earth Day Electronic Recycling event. This year the event has added a second location as well. Recyclable electronics will be collected from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the primary location, 100 S. Western Ave. in front of the Senior Center in Park Ridge, and also at the second drop-off location in the parking lot of Town Hall, 1700 Ballard Rd., Park Ridge. Collection at the second location is limited to 5 pallets of electronic items and will operate from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. or until the limit is reached. The event is again sponsored by Liberty Bank for Savings in cooperation with the Park Ridge Chamber and the Park Ridge Park District. At the Maine Township drop-off location, people are encouraged to also bring one item of non-perishable food for the Emergency Food Pantry.

At both locations a suggested donation of $5 per vehicle will be requested. A portion of the donation

goes to the Park Ridge Community Fund and the rest will offset the cost of hosting the event and hiring a certified recycling company.

Note from Gail: We’re looking for more sponsors to help defray the cost of the recycling contractor!

Business After Hours Openings
I am looking to fill two hosting spots for Business After Hours this year: November 19 and December 17 are the only ones left. If you’d like to host – you provide treats and beverages and Chamber members come to check out your business – let me know. Would prefer businesses who haven’t hosted in past 12 months to give others the chance to do so.

SBA Changes
Kim Uhlig, Director of Economic Development, City of Park Ridge Submitted this:

Changes at the Small Business Administration (SBA)

Beginning Monday, March 16, the SBA implements the following changes:

* Temporarily raises guarantees to up to 90 percent on SBA's 7(a) loan program, through calendar year 2009, or until the funds are exhausted. This increase in guarantee levels will help provide banks with the greater confidence they need to extend credit during the current recession, will mean more capital available to small business owners around the country.

* Temporarily eliminates fees for borrowers on SBA 7(a) loans and for both borrowers and lenders on 504 Certified Development Company loans, through calendar year 2009, or until the funds are exhausted. This will mean more capital available to small businesses at a lower cost. The fee elimination is retroactive to February 17, the day the Recovery Act was signed. SBA is developing a mechanism for refunding fees paid on loans since then. Additionally, the President announced that the Treasury Department willcommit up to $15 billion to help unlock the frozen credit markets by purchasing small business loan securities currently frozen on the secondary market, freeing up more capital to jumpstart lending for small business owners.

Springfield

Roundup
Springfield Roundup (received from Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce):

‘Governor Patrick Quinn delivered his Budget Address on March 18 to a joint session of the Illinois General Assembly and presented a dire fiscal situation for the State of Illinois: an $11.6 billion deficit. While he personally received a warm welcome from legislators, his proposed budget engendered a mixed reaction, particularly his call for tax increases and other revenue changes. The highlights are listed below.

Quinn also proposed a capital infrastructure plan called Illinois Jobs Now! to be funded through a combination of federal, state and local funds, including increases in certain motor vehicle-related fees. The $26 billion bonded plan has already met with some skepticism because the funding sources are not expected to bring in more than $4.5 billion over several years.

The governor also embraced pension reform for new state employees to include these provisions: adjusting the retirement age upward; changing the benefit formula to make it similar to private sector; reducing the COLA adjustments; and increasing employee contributions. The proposed budget also includes some cost-cutting measures across state government, some so-called “sweeps” of state funds, and the use of forthcoming federal stimulus monies. And, a Taxpayer Action Board is being created and will be headed by Tom Johnston of the Taxpayers’ Federation of Illinois, who said that the board will not recommend tax changes, but instead will focus on efficiencies and new approaches to fiscal problems.

Proposed tax changes:

Increase individual income tax from 3 to 4.5 percent; Increase personal exemption from $2000 to $6000; Increase corporate income tax from 4.8 to 7.2 percent (plus 2.5 personal property replacement tax brings total to 9.7 percent, one of the highest in the country); Increase cigarette tax by $1.00 per pack.

Other business and sales tax changes:

Change definition of U.S. for certain business subsidiaries;Decouple from the 2004 federal business tax cuts;Tax insurance purchased by certain businesses from large companies outside of Illinois;Decouple from qualified production credit;Repeal research and development credit; Limit corporate income tax credits to 50 percent of liability; Create a sales tax on customized computer software; Roll back the graphic arts exemption to only include production; Allow the Manufacturers’ Purchase Credit to expire; Tax sweetened tea and coffee at the same rate as soft drinks; Taxing all grooming and hygiene products at the same rate; Decrease retailers’ vendor discount fee from 1.75 to .75 percent. (This is being proposed to offset a revenue loss from a “sales tax holiday” to take place in August 2009) Make changes to certain banking transactions; Decouple from federal stimulus provisions.’

Please stop in for lunch – or place a catering order 847-696-4200 and support our Chamber members!

Diddy Blyth
Diddy Blyth, A Sterling Design, is also a singing member of the Chicago Master Singers. Their performance “home” is the Devine Word Chapel on Waukegan Road north of Willow Road. Their April 17th and 19th spring concert, accompanied by the Ars Viva orchestra, has the best of the masters and the best of the living composers: Schubert’s Mass in A-flat major and Morten Lauridsen’s Lux Eterna. The chorus took some of Lauridsen’s shorter pieces to Provence, France last summer to great acclaim. Lux Eterna is his greatest masterpiece and Schubert speaks for himself. Park Ridge Garden Club
From PR Garden Club newsletter:

“Please bring in your unwanted small glass jars and small vases to be used to make fresh flower arrangements for the bedside tables of hospice patients and nursing home residents. Sometimes used food jars can make good containers…think recycling before tossing. Please bring the containers to the March meeting. Lorraine needs to have an idea of how many arrangements we can make so she can bring the appropriate amount of flowers. We will make the flower arrangements just before our April meeting. Those interested are invited to come early to help make the arrangements.”

Got an Old Stove to Donate?

Gail's Weekly Chamber UPDATE

Happy Casimir Pulaski Day and Happy Monday,

Casimir Pulaski Day is a holiday observed in Illinois on the first Monday of every March to commemorate Casimir Pulaski, a Revolutionary War cavalry officer born March 4, 1747 in Poland as Kazimierz PuĊ‚aski. He is known for his contributions to the U.S. military in the American Revolution by training its soldiers and cavalry. (source: Wikipedia)

For those following my stage career, we’ve done 4 shows and will perform this Thursday, Friday and Saturday at Washington School. Tickets are still available for Thursday and Friday! I play a tap-dancing, singing Karen Carpenter Ant…(it’s a musical comedy!)

Thank you to Kris Hansen and Bethany Terrace in Morton Grove for hosting the February Business After Hours last week! What a nice spread of food and refreshments they served! What a beautiful place to spend rehab or long term care!

Thank you to Susan Frangos, Higher Level Wellness, who was the keynote speaker last Friday at the Women in Business Breakfast held at The Summit of Uptown. Susan’s topic was ‘Stop Singing the Sugar Blues - Learn how to deconstruct your cravings’. Very interesting! If you need help cutting out sugar, call Susan at 847-361-6185.
The Summit of Uptown put out a delicious breakfast buffet of eggs, bacon, sausage, pancakes, oatmeal, pastries, fresh fruit – all that and the networking and the great topic for just $10!
Thank you to our co-chairs, Marta Hoover, Copy Set Center and Karen Larsen, Order My Gift who set up the networking event for the 30+ ladies who came.
This week the Entrepreneurial Knowledge Group (EKG) will meet at the Chamber office on Thursday, March 5, from 10 to 11:30 a.m.
EKG meets once a month and is co-chaired by Lynda Tourloukis, You Can Say Yes!, and Carol Simantz, Catalyst Marketing – Public Relations, Inc.
Business owners get together to discuss common issues and pool resources. Jim Cone, WSI, developed a website for the EKG: http://www.entrepreneursofparkridge.com/

Cathy Janus, National Sales Director for Marc Promotional Products, sells ads for our newsletter and can be reached at 773-401-4556. Thanks, Cathy – she does this as part of the Communications Committee!
Mini-Expos
Showcase your business with a mini-expo at the monthly networking luncheon! You can set up a display about your business and provide samples, brochures and coupons for your products and services. During the scheduled networking time before and after the meeting, you will have the opportunity to discuss your business with Chamber members. You will also have 1 minute to introduce yourself at the podium during the meeting. The cost of the Mini-Expo is $25. We can have up to 4 per luncheon.

The next Chamber networking luncheon will be on the 3rd Wednesday this month – March 18 – at the Park Ridge Country Club from 11:30 to 1:30.
Mayor Frimark and Alderman Schmidt will discuss their views of the economic issues within Park Ridge. I’ll be the moderator and expect it to be a lively debate!
And, of course, the food at the Country Club is always a gourmet meal!

Chamber workshop will be held at Comfort Inn in Des Plaines on March 25.
Topic is ‘With a Little Help From my Friends: Best Practices & Critical Strategies for Business Prosperity in 2009 .
Here is an overview: “Our current economic crisis is hurting everyone and not everyone will get bailed out. Business owners and business leaders face the challenge of making the necessary changes and adjustments to survive. We will conduct a highly interactive 3 hour workshop that will provide attendees with ideas and strategies of how to prosper in 2009. The workshop will combine the presentation of the lastest Vistage International research findings on Best Practices, group discussion and individual planning the group feedback support.”
Vistage International, the world’s leading chief executive organization, and its affiliates have more than 14,000 members in 16 countries. Vistage members generate nearly $300 billion in annual revenue and have more than 2/1 million employees around the world. Vistage is dedicated to increasing the effectiveness and enhancing the lives of chief executives. Member companies are better run and grow their revenues, on average, at twice the percentage growth rate after joining Vistage.
$40 for members; $50 for non members. Full hot deluxe breakfast included.
******************
Catherine Johns comes back April 29 for the complete presentation of what we got just half hour of in the Women in Business – “Creating a Powerful Presence”. She was such a hit that I booked her for the 3 hour workshop. $40 for members; $50 for non members. Full hot deluxe breakfast included. Details to follow.

See the end of this email for the list of who will appear in the guide. If you don’t see your name, then you probably have not renewed.
Platinum members will be on the front cover! It’s only $300 more to upgrade to Platinum and it includes 8 lunches! It’s the best value in town! Last year we had 3 Platinum members and this year we have 9 so far!
55 of you took the golf survey and overwhelmingly want to continue with the golf outing so the planning committee is full steam ahead! The date is June 24 – Wed – and it will be at the Chevy Chase Country Club for the 3rd year in a row.

Would you like to help out on the planning committee? We need extra hands. Also, we need sponsors and golfers and silent auction items!

Thank you to all who responded to the survey! Details to follow but please mark your calendar for Wednesday, June 24, for another fabulous event!

The Chamber has interest in starting a second leads and referral on the 4th Tuesday of each month starting with March 24. So far,
Adam D. Paoli, CLTC, Investment Adviser Representative,
John Hancock Financial Network, has offered to kick it off. Amy Sullivan, CPA, is also joining the group but we’re looking for all other industries!
I love how Park Ridge comes together as a community to recycle cell phones and support our troops!
District 64 has a Green Team at each elementary school and the schools collected 113 cell phones for soldiers and dropped them off at the Chamber.
To date, we’ve shipped a total of 303 cell phones for recycling so that 303 phone cards (60 minutes each) are sent to soldiers overseas to call home to loved ones and talk for free for 303 hours! Isn’t that wonderful?
For more information on this worthwhile program, go to www.cellphonesforsoldiers.com

Have you been to Tasty Pup yet? Not only do they have great hot dogs (my daughter’s personal favorite) but they have great chicken sandwiches. I was there last week!
Curt Edlund of Larsen & Edlund (attorneys) and Fran Hook-Hume of Maine Center both had their pictures in the the Pioneer Press last week on page 17 for cooking a spaghetti dinner with the Kiwanis and raised over $8K “to support area social service organizations that provide programs and resources for children.”
The Maine Community Youth Assistance Foundation met with Congress a couple weeks back to discuss the national agenda on teen substance abuse prevention, intervention and treatment. Margaret Polovchak (director) was also pictured on page 17 along with U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky.
Congratulations to new member, Tom Canale, partner in The McTigue Financial Group! Read on for why:
Best Place to Work #3 McTigue Financial

By: Allison Riggio March 02, 2009

Why it's a Best Place to Work: Lifelong learning is the philosophy at this company, and staff at all levels of McTigue Financial are regularly evaluated for areas that might need improvement. A new hire might benefit from personal finance lessons, veteran employees might need to fine-tune business writing skills, or the whole office might need a training session on work-life balance. Managing Partner John McTigue says the company is happy to bring in outside assistance because it promotes professional and personal growth. "It might be the biggest gift a firm can give someone," he says. http://www.chicagobusiness.com/cgi-bin/mag/department.pl?id=126
