Gail's Weekly Chamber UPDATE

Thanksgiving was wonderful – we were all as stuffed as the turkey!

Winterfest was fabulous! We were blessed with perfect weather, lots of merchants held open houses, Santa arrived on the fire truck right on time, the beautifully decorated trees stayed up, the reindeer were cute and the Galuskas once again baked thousands of cookies!

And Maine South won state! Go Hawks!

Park Ridge is a wonderful community! We have so much to be grateful for.

Hodges Park Trees The Winterfest Committee consisted of the Park Ridge Chamber of Commerce, The City of Park Ridge, the Park Ridge Public Library, and the South Park Merchants Association. I especially want to thank the people who represented the organizations and who met regularly to plan Winterfest: Dan Galuska & Tim Malz (South Park Merchants Association); Mary Dalton (Library), and Kim Uhlig, (City).
There were a lot of people involved to making Winterfest successful and I apologize if I forget someone. Please check out www.parkridgewinterfest.com also.
As Lian and I walked around during Winterfest, there were many wonderful carolers singing. I didn’t get all the names but there was Emerson Glee with Terry Broeker (music teacher) in front of the Pickwick Theatre. Also, the Willows Academy Girls Choir in the Renaissance gowns walked around Uptown signing and were lovely. I saw Indian Guides and several Girl Scout troops also caroling. Thank you to everyone who came out!
The best decorated house contest was judged by the Park Ridge Garden Club and won by 410 S. Prospect. Tina Kohnke was very excited so take a drive by. The president of the Garden Club, Paulette Carrion wrote:
“But there were several houses that deserve recognition for a job well done. Our choices for runner-up.........321 S. Courtland and 430 S. Prospect. And best "kid factor" home is definately 520 S. Prospect.”
The wind has played havoc with the trees in Hodges Park but they were all standing in time for Winterfest. Next year, we’ll need to think of a better way to keep them standing as Marci and John Derrick and I were righting about 7 trees on Friday morning.
The 30 trees were sponsored and beautifully and creatively decorated by the following. We made about $600 profit to put towards Winterfest.

The Boy Scouts Troop 3 from Mary Seat of Wisdom donated their time and energy again this year to set up the luminaries up and down both Prospect and Courtland. They seemed especially bright and lovely this year!
The Park Ridge Fire Department decorated their fire truck with strings of lights and brought Santa Claus to the Library at 6 p.m. promptly where he was met by Mayor Dave Schmidt. Santa Claus was played by Charles Donaghey who totally donates his time and energy.
Chief Frank Kaminski and Commander Lou Jogman of the Park Ridge Police Department and all their officers did a great job of traffic control all evening! Also, the Kiwanis and some Citizens Patrol groups (Gary Warner and Susan Scatchell) and Ann Witek were all helping with the double decker buses at the stops, assisting in loading and unloading and also directing people.
Thank you to all the merchants who stayed open and held open houses and gave away cookies, candy, hot apple cider, pizza, wine, hot mulled wine! Lian and I visited 2 Sisters, The Perfect Dinner, Dominic’s Kitchen Store, Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, Park Ridge Paint (the Galuskas baked thousands of cookies!), Kevin Witek at Y-Tech Heating & Cooling, Athletico, and Perry’s Pizzeria! We rode the double decker buses, saw the luminaries, met the mayor and Santa, petted the reindeer. I took over 100 pictures and will be posting them shortly!

District 64 Community Forums The Board of Education would greatly appreciate the input and assistance of all community members.
Community Forums School Superintendent Search
Tuesday, December 1 at 9:30 a.m. &
Wednesday, December 2 at 7:30 p.m.
Washington School, 1500 Stewart Ave., Park Ridge

The Board of Education invites all members of the community to participate in the search for a new school superintendent. Current Superintendent Sally Pryor is retiring on June 30, and the Board is working with consultants to conduct a national search for her replacement.

A key step in the search process is to identify the values and priorities of our community, and create a profile of the characteristics that our community seeks in an outstanding educational leader to guide our schools into the new decade.

The community meetings will be facilitated by representatives of the search firm, Hazard, Young, Attea & Associates, Ltd. The north suburban firm has assisted about 600 school boards since it was established in 1987.

Can’t attend, but would like to contribute your thoughts?
Please complete the Leadership Profile Assessment available on the District 64 Web site ( http://www.d64.org/site/files/d64ssprofile09.pdf ), at school offices and the District 64 Educational Service Center.

Assessments are due by Friday, December 4.

Thank you for participating.

Project Blue Light

Citizens Police Academy Project Blue Light

Concerns of Police Survivors is encouraging law enforcement families,
friends and law enforcement agencies to decorate in blue lights for the coming holiday season. By placing one blue light in a window of your home, you'll be showing your support for officers killed in the line of duty and those who continue to work America's street. By placing strings of blue lights outside your home, at the department, and throughout the community, law enforcement officers will understand that they are appreciated.

The color blue is symbolic of peace. By displaying your blue lights, you
will be sending a dual message - that you support America's peacekeepers and that you hope the coming year will be a year of peace.

Let your blue lights shine for law enforcement during the holidays.

Citizens Police Academy class next Spring March 31 (Wed) through June 2 (Wed). Applications are available at the PD front desk or by contacting Lt Jason Leavitt: 847-878-2461

Gail's Weekly Chamber UPDATE

Busy weekend! Went to the Park Ridge Juniors’ Hawaiian fundraiser in honor of The Center for Concern. It was a blast with a huge crowd in attendance! Mary Schurder, Mary Ryan, and several others (the mayor) and I danced the hula on stage – aloha!

Tonight Winterfest and the Light up the Trees Coalition will be honored at the City Council meeting. Again, I would like to mention the Chamber restaurants who donated the lunches and desserts for over 250 people because I’m just so proud of their generosity:

1. All on the Road Catering
2. Carlucci Rosemont
3. Hay Caramba!
4. Houlihan's Restaurant
5. Panino's Pizzeria
6. Perry's Pizzaria
7. Potbellys Sandwiches
8. Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory
9. Rosewood Restaurant
10. Dominick's Finer Foods (donated the bottled water)

Park Ridge rocks! Please spend your money with them!

The Grand Opening & Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for Vive! Therapeutic Massage at 1416 S. Canfield was lovely! Mayor Dave Schmidt, Alderman Allegretti, and City Clerk Betty Henneman joined Geri Belazs, Chamber members, friends and family as we all celebrated Geri Belazs’ new business next door to Accents by Jenny. The flowers were beautiful (by Jenny next door of course!) and the appetizers were from All on the Road. It was a fun event with many well-wishers!

The Park Ridge Rotary Club holds its "Citrus for Scholarships" sale Dec. 5th. Primary distribution will be in front of the Park Ridge Library.
In 2008, the Rotary awarded six scholarships for vocational schools and colleges from the funds of this sale. Over $ 14,000 in scholarships were awarded.
Featured this year is a 20 lb. box of mixed navel and red grapefruit in a festive holiday box. Its price is $ 20. Also offered are separate boxes of 20 lb. oranges and 20 lb. ruby red grapefruit. Each is $ 18.
Orders can be placed on line at www.parkridgerotary.com, or called into the Rotary Citrus Hotline 847 - 655 - 1580. The Rotary web site is a "secure" site for credit card orders.
Orders can be picked up at any of three locations: in front of the Park Ridge Library, Bredemann's Chevrolet (Dempster & Greenwood), or Kaage's Newsstand in Edison Park.
The Park Ridge Rotary raises over $24,000 yearly, and then supports many organizations in our community, and participates in the Taste of Park Ridge, the Community Suppers in Park Ridge, and other civic events.
Rotary International has sought to eradicate polio over the last forty years, limiting the spread of polio now to only four countries worldwide. Originally polio was in 30 countries, crippling hundreds of thousand children each year.
Please join us for an Ecumenical Thanksgiving service at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church Wednesday, November 25th at 7:30 p.m. in the Church. All are invited to attend this service of thanks that brings our community together. This is truly a faith-filled experience for all!

Gail's Weekly Chamber UPDATE

I hope you had a happy Halloween – 10 year old Lian went as Jeanie (from the old sitcom ‘I Dream of Jeanie’ which she adores).

I’m heading to the Fall conference this week for the Illinois Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives for which I received a scholarship. If you’d like to donate something towards a silent auction gift basket, please let me know!

October’s monthly networking business after hours was at Morningfields Thursday and about 45 came out ready to network, eat, drink, and shop! Morningfields’ manager, Ed Allegretti, welcomed everyone and donated a lovely bottle of Ghost Pines Cabernet as a prize (won by Dick Larsen, the luckiest man alive!). Morningfields’ chef made wonderful appetizers from scratch and I saw a lot of business cards passing hands! It was a wonderful and successful event and a big thank you to Morningfields for hosting!
Morningfields is located at 800 Devon, 847-696-4200. Please join us!
Nick Straub celebrates 30 years of Perry’s Pizzaria ownership and you’re invited to his party!
Come to Perry’s Pizzaria at 711 Devon tomorrow, Tuesday, between 5 and 7 p.m. Mayor Schmidt will cut the red ribbon with Nick to celebrate this milestone! Refreshments will be served so bring your business cards and come out to celebrate!
November 5, Thursday, 5:00pm-7:00pm The Perfect Dinner Grand Opening Ceremony & Ribbon Cutting, 6 Northwest Highway. They moved next door to Lisa’s Homemade Italian Ice. Come out to celebrate their grand opening while Mayor Schmidt cuts the ribbon. They make meals to take home and feed your family!
Usually our lunches are on the 2nd Wednesday each month. This month, however, the 2nd Wednesday is Veterans Day and the Chamber office is closed in honor of Veterans Day.
Therefore, our November networking luncheon will be held on the 3rd Wednesday which is November 18. It will be held at new member Houlihan’s Restaurant and it will also honor those who serve but in a different capacity…’Volunteerism in the Community’.
All nonprofit organizations and service clubs are welcomed to take a free mini-expo and hand out literature and talk to everyone about their organization. Rather than a guest speaker, I’ll ask each mini-expo participant to talk for a few minutes about their organization and their need for volunteers. If you have a favorite volunteer that you want to honor, please bring them! The mini expo will be at no cost but regular lunch fees apply ($25pp for members).
Please help get the word out to all the various organizations in town who could benefit from the exposure to the business side of Park Ridge!
November 3, 5:00pm-7:00pm Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at Perry's Pizzaria & Ribs/Catering, 711 Devon, Park Ridge. Celebrate Nick Straub’s ownership for 30 years.
November 5, 5:00pm-7:00pm The Perfect Dinner Grand Opening Ceremony & Ribbon Cutting, 6 Northwest Highway.
November 7 – Volunteers installing holiday lights around town!
November 13, 5:00pm-7:00pm Grand Opening & Ribbon Cutting Ceremony Vive Therapuetic Massage. 1416 S. Canfield, Park Ridge, IL. Join Mayor Dave Schmidt and Chamber members as we celebrate this new business owned by Geri Balazs.

All service clubs, organizations, and associations are invited to set up a mini expo at no charge to hand out information to the Chamber membership. Regular lunch charges apply. Member $25 Prospective Member $30. Call the Chamber for reservation.

Sponsor & Decorate a Tree in Hodges Park! Winterfest activities cost around $8,000 but it’s a free event for the community. One of the ways we’re underwriting it is to have trees delivered in Hodges Park and sell sponsorships for $50 to decorate a tree. A sign with the sponsor’s message will be in front of tree.

Give your opinion!

Some like the idea of having one waste hauler come through their allies just once a week.

Others don’t like to have their choice taken away from them.

What do you think? Don’t let others make your decision for you.
