Gail's Weekly Chamber UPDATE

How was your weekend? Our’s was busy and fun-packed! My husband and daughter were in the Harry O’Brien Community Run/Walk while I got to take a lot of pictures. Thank you to all those who showed up and participated and those who helped out and those who sponsored! Such a wonderful community event for such a worthy cause!
After the community run, Lian and I went to the StageCoach Theatre Arts School Open House and heard all about their program of music, dance, and theatre! Then we bought chocolate at Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, wine at WineStyles, and got our books from the library! Then yesterday she and I took my little convertable all the way to Donley’s Wild West Town in Union because we won tickets from Kidwinks.com and we had a blast!
Our big event this week is the golf outing on Thursday. Can you donate a raffle prize such as a gift certificate for your business? If you let me know by tomorrow, we can still get you in the program! Time is of the essence!

Last Thursday was our Business After Hours and, boy, did we have a lot of people coming and going throughout those 2 hours (never more than 50 at a time in the building though – I counted!). Throughout the 2 hours we had at least 70 to 80 people come and go!
Thank you to Joe Dydio, Houlihan’s, for the hot appetizers! And thank you to Barb Tyksinski, All on the Road Catering & Bakery, for all the cold appetizers!
Thank you to Diane Forsythe, Rotary, for the wine! And Dave Donovan, Kiwanis, also for the wine!
And, of course, a shout-out to Pat Ahern, Dave Samson, and Jackie Mathews for giving us a special reason to host and celebrate – hats off to the 3 Presidents-Elect! We raised $255 that evening and donated it to Rainbow Hospice!

What a fabulous event the Women in Business networking luncheon at Carlucci Rosemont was last Friday! With almost 30 in attendance (Marko Ratic was our lone, brave male!), the delicious meal and the wonderfully informative speaker, Carol Simantz, Catalyst Marketing-Public Relations, Inc. We found out that YES, we do need a marketing-communications plan!
Please try to come to our next Women in Business which will be at Kustum Kribs Baby Boutique and be a Ladies PamperFest!
Another PRE-SELL!
Raffle tickets for 3 big prizes are being sold and will be drawn at the golf outing. Here are the prizes:

Gail's Weekly Chamber UPDATE

My family and I got back last night from Mackinac Island. What a wonderfully historic and beautiful island! As you know, there are no cars allowed so horses, bikes, and our own two feet were what we relied on to get around. Although we did buy fudge, it still wasn’t as good as our own Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory here in town!
What do you think of a classic car show in Park Ridge? Would you attend? Would you enter a car? Would you sponsor?
We ended up with over 30 people in attendance at the monthly networking luncheon last week held at the library! Thank you to Jan Van de Carr and Gretchan Kottcamp who spoke on the business services offered by the library and showing us how to navigate their new website.

If you are a business owner in Park Ridge, you can have a library card, even if you are not a Park Ridge resident. Did you know that?

All on the Road Catering once again did a fabulous job catering the lunch – the London Broil and the Lemon Basil Chicken were both to die for!!! Thank you for a delicious meal – once again.

One of the benefits of showing up at a Chamber networking luncheon is that we pull from the members’ business cards and one lucky person gets to appear on the front cover of the Chamber newsletter. Our lucky winner at the luncheon was Karen Larsen, Generation Connection.

The raffle prizes were won by:
1. $25 Chamber Gift Certificate: Susan Scatchell, A-Abiding Care
2. Microsoft Office Pro 2007 Software: Dave Sherman, Pioneer Press/SunTimes
3. Super Market Super Products book of everything, donated by Jack & Christal Owens was won by Amy Sullivan, Sullivan & Johnson, CPA
4. 8x10 Sitting and Portrait, donated by Diddy Blyth, A Sterling Design: Amy Sullivan, Sullivan & Johnson, CPA
5. Taffy Apples donated by Linda Hills, Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory: Carol Delorin, Park Ridge Community Fund; and Dick Larsen, Larsen & Edlund, attorneys.

Note that we’re selling mums to be delivered week of September 20; however if we don’t get $350 in orders, I cannot place the order. So if you want them, please let me know asap.
2 sizes are being offered:
• 4.5” pot for $5 (15/case)
• 8” pot for $8 (4 pots/case)
Colors offered are: bronze, yellow, red, & lavender in both sizes.
When I place the order, I need to place in full cases of one color so if you can order in cases, it would make it so much easier for us! I will combine orders but with offering 4 different colors, it will be a bit more complicated.
The large ones are grown in an 8" pot with an average finished head span of 15-18" across and average height is 14-16". See picture for an example – they’ll come with buds barely cracked open so you can enjoy them longer!
Email me your order – no credit cards please – just cash and checks. I’m pre-selling the mums and only placing what I get orders for and need to be at least $350 to get them delivered.

Gail's Weekly Chamber UPDATE

Friday night was a perfect night for the last Concert in the Park! Liberty Bank for Savings sponsored the event and couldn’t have picked a better night for listening under stars to Brian Patti and his Big Band sounds! Dick Barton took a photo of Brian Patti, Kane Connell and me:
It was a fun evening and I saw friends from Rotary, the City, the Garden Club and Playmakers – and family! Everyone came out to enjoy the last concert of the season, under the stars, and dancing.
When you’re in Uptown, check out the new posters in the kiosks – ‘A Day in Park Ridge’ that the Retail Committee did!
Did I mention that Houlihan’s is our newest Platinum member?
Our monthly networking luncheon is this Wednesday, Aug. 11, at the Park Ridge Public Library!
Here about your ‘ROI @ the Library’. Public libraries are supported by your tax dollars so come learn about the wonderful business resources available at the Park Ridge Public Library! We’ll show you how easy it is to find information on the Library’s new website and how to get the latest news.
All on the Road Catering will be making a fabulous meal for us! Here’s the menu:
Baby Mozzarella and Asparagus with Proscuitto
Spinach Salad with Berries
Lemon Pepper Chicken
London Broil
Roasted Fingerling Potatoes
Broccoli Cashew Salad
Mini Pastries
Drinks
All this for just $20 for Chamber members! $25 for Prospective Members and Walk Ins. Yes, that’s right, I’ve lowered the price this month!

Come for the great networking, wonderful information and fabulous meal! Check-in and networking start at 11:30. I hope you can make it!

The Chamber is selling mums to be delivered week of September 20.

Another PRE-SELL!
Raffle tickets for 3 big prizes are being sold and will be drawn at the golf outing. Here are the prizes:
1st: 16 GB iPad with Wi-Fi
2nd: Dinner for 4 at Evanston Golf Club
3rd: ‘Legally Blonde’ – 2 Tickets
Tickets are $10 each or 3 for $25. They’re here at the Chamber and will be at the networking luncheon on Wed at the library.
Two new members just joined the Chamber so please welcome them when you see them!

Gail's Weekly Chamber UPDATE

Tomorrow is Lian’s 11th birthday so the Haller household is gearing up for another party! My mother went back to Pensacola last week – some of the members we used or visited last week while she was visiting were Houlihan’s, Panino’s, D’Agostino’s, The Perfect Dinner (twice!), Walgreens, Morningfield’s, the library – I’m sure there were more.
By the way, Morningfield’s is under new management and is NOT closing their doors! I heard the rumor too but its not true – please shop with them as they load up their shelves again!

Business After Hours Last Thursday Our monthly Business After Hours for July was hosted at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital and included tours of which my favorite was to their green roof. Did you know that 95% of the rain captured by the roof, goes into the green roof or runs down through the gutters and ends in their rain gardens – so only 5% goes into the City’s sewers. It was very interesting!
Thank you to Marcia Opal and to Tony Armada for hosting – and all the staff who stayed and gave us tours! They even served iced shrimp with the wine as one of the many appetizers so if you missed it, you missed a good party (I mean, networking event!).
I’m a participant in the Tomosynthesis (3 D mammogram) study which I mentioned at the Business After Hours and many women came up to ask about it – read down to the bottom of this eblast for the press release again. I met with Dr. Friedewald yesterday to go over my results and not only was she delightful but I’m happy to say I’m healthy!

Women in Business Our annual book review for our Women in Business is beloved by all the ladies who faithfully attend each year. Sometimes the recommended books are business, sometimes inspirational. See the list below.
Thank you to Ralph Palmisano, Cream of the Crepe, who brought over the wonderful crepes (Rise and Shine and Greekfast!). All on the Road Catering provided the coffee service (thanks, Barb!)
Here is the book list that each reviewer raved about as being a favorite:
Book Author
All I Ever Needed to Know I Learned in Kindergarten Robert Fulghum
Freakanomics Levitt & Dubner
Girl with a Dragon Tattoo Stieg Larsson
Leap of Faith Queen Noor
Leonie Elizabeth Adler
Loving Frank Nancy Horan
Making Toast Roger Rosenblatt
Parallel Lives Phyllis Rose
Pillars of the Earth Ken Follett
Sarah's Key Tatiana de Rosnay
Shift Peter Arnell
Still Alice Lisa Genova
The 4 Agreements Don Miguel Ruiz
The Alchemist Paolo Coelho
The Amber Room Steve Berry
The Last Lecture Randy Pausch
The Power of a Single Thought Gay Hendricks & Debbie Devoe
The Shack William P. Young
The Summer Guest Justin Cronin
The Web that Has no Weaver Ted Kaptchuk
Tipperary Frank Delaney
Twilight Series Stephanie Meyer
Women, Food & God Geneen Roth
Year of the Fog Michelle Richmond

Also Last Week Last week, we also had PREN 2, a Golf Team meeting with Skokie, Billy Elliot the musical (FABULOUS!), the Health Care Forum, Multi-Chamber Networking After Hours at Resurrection, in addition to our own Business After Hours and Women in Business.
We have all these events for you! So YOU can network, get leads, give leads, get to know people and in the end, hopefully, increase your business and your sales. Yes, it’s all about you. So please take advantage of all the Chamber has to offer. We have 410 members – have you met them all? Remember to shop our Chamber members first! If you want people to buy from you, are you also doing the same? What about your business insurance, your dentist, your financial planning, your banking? We have shops and restaurants but we also have services. When you use another Chamber member – let them know you’re a Chamber member too. Some offer discounts to other Chamber members.

Sales Tax Holiday For the first time ever,Illinois is slashing 5% off the total sales tax August 6–15, 2010.
Stock up on back to school merchandise, clothes, etc.

Retail The Retail Committee came up with “A Day in Park Ridge” flyers and posters – check out the Uptown kiosks to see the posters.
We’re also planning AutumnFest on October 2 (kickoff) with pet parade and scarecrow making. Because we’re putting money into advertising, we’re charging $20 to participate in order to be listed in all the publicity and receive the rubber duck to hide in your window! More on that later!
The Retail Committee is making big plans and you want to be a part of it!
Mark Your Calendar for these Chamber Networking Events! August 5, Thursday, 10:00am – 11:30am EKG – Entrepreneurial Knowledge Group Monthly meeting, Regus, 350 S. Northwest Hwy. 3-D Tomo Study Hologic tomosynthesis 3-D mammography is now available through

national research study at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital

Women aged 35 and over are invited to participate in a national research study of the Hologic, Inc. tomosynthesis 3-D mammography system. The study is being conducted at the Advocate Lutheran General Center for Advanced Care, 1700 Luther Lane, on the campus of Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, Park Ridge.
Advocate Lutheran General Hospital is the only site in the Chicago-land area selected to conduct this multicenter clinical trial of the tomosynthesis mammography system. The principal investigator for the study at this site is Sarah Friedewald, M.D., section chief breast imaging and co-medical director of the Caldwell Breast Center at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital.
The study is being done to see how breast tomosynthesis mammography, a 3-D imaging exam, compares to a conventional digital 2-D mammography exam. Approximately 1,600 to 2,400 women will participate in the study nationwide with about 450 anticipated to enroll at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital.

Women aged 35 and over who are planning to have a routine mammogram may be eligible to participate in this research study. Participants will have additional 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional views taken of the breast. The study will take about 15-30 minutes, which includes the time it takes to read and complete a consent form.
Women interested in participating in the research study should call HealthAdvisor at 1.800.3.ADVOCATE (1.800.323.8622) for more information, and mention Code 8W35 when calling about the study. There is no cost to study participants.
“We are excited that Lutheran General was selected as one of the sites for this clinical trial,” said Dr. Friedewald. “We have a high volume of patients who would potentially benefit from newer techniques in mammography.”
The Lutheran General Center for Advanced Care is a leading-edge outpatient facility dedicated to the diagnosis of breast cancer, and cancer treatment and management. It features the Caldwell Breast Center, offering state-of-the-art screening, diagnostic, treatment and counseling capabilities; a three-floor multidisciplinary Cancer Care Center with comprehensive medical oncology, radiation oncology, gynecology/oncology and specialty services; and an extensive Center for Advanced Imaging providing the latest imaging technology for all types of diagnostic needs.
