Gail's Weekly Chamber UPDATE

The weekend started Friday at 4:30 at Kustum Kribs Baby Boutique where Lisa Arreguin had decorated and set up an enchanting spa experience with breezy panels, strings of lights, and stations of various services. Unfortunately, after the store closed, a man broke in by breaking the front door glass! Fortunately, Lisa and her girlfriend were still there and confronted him – he ran, Lisa ran after him, got his license plate and he was arrested! What a night!
The Kalo Foundation ‘Arts and Carafes’ wine and food pairings at the PR Country Club was fabulous! What a fun time with great food, wine and friends – and silent auction items (I didn’t win anything though)!
Are you going to Rainbow Hospice Angels Ball on Oct. 16 at the Hyatt Regency O’Hare? It will be another spectacular event and the band is Gentlemen of Leisure who played at the Lake Effect event last year with Plain White T’s (‘hey there delila!’).

Sad News Sympathies are extended to Orit Gordon who’s father just passed away in Israel, within a month of her mother’s passing.

Also, Sheri Roche’s father recently passed away. Sheri is a volunteer for the Park Ridge Community Fund and organized the Harry O’Brien Community Run.

Condolences to each for the loss of their fathers.

LifeSource, Chicagoland’s Blood Center, is hosting the Park Ridge Community Blood Drive on Monday, Oct. 4, from 2p.m. to 8p.m. at the South Park Church, 1550 S. Courtland Avenue, about a block south of Devon, in Park Ridge, Illinois.

The need for blood is constant and ongoing. It is needed for surgeries and medical procedures; leukemia and cancer management, trauma and other care. Although any time is a good time to donate blood, it is especially needed during the coming winter months when there is a cyclical shortage due to bad weather, the holidays, travel, and school vacations.

Every time you donate blood you can save the lives of three people. And it’s easy to donate. The donation process takes about an hour and it’s both safe and comfortable. Donors must be at least 17 years old (16 with parental signed parental consent form), weigh at least 110 pounds and be in general good health. Most medications are accepted. There is no upper age limit. For more information or to make an appointment, call 847-803-7943. Walk-ins welcome.

Note: We are now on our regular schedule, which is every 56 days. Our schedule in Park Ridge makes it possible for serious donors to participate up to six times a year. Our “next” blood drive, will be at Mary Seat of Wisdom on the morning of Sunday, Dec. 5, 2010

LifeSource, Chicagoland’s Blood Center, is a non-profit organization. As the largest blood center in Illinois,
LifeSource distributes a half million-blood products annually to 58 area hospitals in meeting the need for patient
transfusion therapy. Ninety percent of the population will need donated blood in its lifetime, yet fewer than three
percent of eligible donors in the Chicagoland area regularly give the gift of life.

Personally, from Gail

Gail's Weekly Chamber UPDATE

The Hallers had a fun weekend! We had dinner at Affresco on Friday – using the voucher I bought from gleeday.com (what a deal!) and then hit Houlihan’s (looking for Dirk). On Saturday, Lian went to StageCoach Theatre School at St. Andrews for 3 hours! So I got to use another voucher I bought from gleeday.com at Anthony Valentino Salon & Spa and had a mani/pedi while Lian had fun at StageCoach. Then Lian and I went to Toy Emporium and spent enough there to get 2 free sandwich duos at Noodles so off to Noodles we went! Talk about spending a wonderful day in Park Ridge!
Yesterday the entire extended Haller family celebrated my in-laws’ 65th wedding anniversary! Do you know many couples who have made it to 65 years of wedded bliss?

Tonight at City Hall, I’ll be handing out gift certificates from Chamber members for the Beautification Awards. Ten lucky families are receiving awards from the Park Ridge Garden Club and the City for their beautiful yards.

Because the City budget was cut, no checks are being issued this year so the Chamber’s generous members gave 10 gift certificates for the 10 winners totaling almost $500 per winner!!! Thank you to these Chamber members for their generosity (and join me if you can!):

Rotary Lunch Meeting at noon, Wednesday September 22:
Guests welcome for $15 fee, to hear our speaker, State Rep Dan Kotowski, who will have an “Update from Springfield”. We meet at the Summit of Uptown. Call Diane Forsythe if you have questions.

I talked with Acting Fire Chief Jeff Sorenson last week and they are NOT working with a marketing firm called Solid Oak Marketing!

If you get a fax and phone call from them, Alvin Walker, he was very convincing and compelling. Yes, I talked to Alvin but also asked him quite specifically if he worked for the Park Ridge Fire Department which he does not and who his company was. He says he’s calling ‘on behalf of’ the PRFD so don’t be taken in.

Last Tuesday was the Grand Opening & Ribbon Cutting at Romano’s Family Pizzeria & Sports Bar, 27 S. NW Highway, and we had a lot of members who came out to enjoy the great food and hospitality of Gary Romano and his manager, Paul, and their staff! Mayor Schmidt cut the red ribbon so look for the pictures!

What a fabulous luncheon last Wednesday at the Park Ridge Country Club! Thank you to Tom McHugh and his staff for the fabulous gourmet meal and service!

The Chamber hosted the Park Ridge Community Fund for its Annual Campaign Kick- Off and introduced the Annual Campaign Chair, Mary Wynn Ryan, owner of Winning Ways Marketing, a marketing communications firm. Mary is an old friend of mine and a life-long Park Ridge resident who is presently serving on the Park Ridge Park District board.

We also unveiled the campaign theme: “GIVING begins at home” and the campaign logo which was designed by Martha Berns, Dempsey Design.

All proceeds from the raffle were donated to the Park Ridge Community Fund! Thank you to those who donated raffle gifts and thank you to those who purchased tickets.

Then on Thursday, we celebrated Morningfield’s Grand Re-Opening, 800 Devon Avenue, with a ribbon cutting performed by the mayor and attended by many!

Check out the new products and delicious offerings from the bakery, deli, wine shop and more! The store is spotless and well stocked – you can drop by for lunch or grab dinner on the way home. Please check it out.

Gail's Weekly Chamber UPDATE

Mother Nature turned the switch and just like that, it’s been cooler! Great sleeping weather, isn’t it? Hope you enjoyed your 3 day weekend! I had my cooking club over on Saturday and we had a fondue party for 12 – cheeses, meat/chicken, and chocolate. It was a blast!

Come join me as we accept a Mayoral Proclamation this evening at City Hall which proclaims that September 13 through 17 is Park Ridge Chamber of Commerce Week! All members are welcomed to come and accept this with me (and be in the pictures!)
Our golf outing with Skokie had a one-hour rain delay but then the skies turned blue and the sun came out! It all worked out great! It was a wonderful outing! Thank you to all our sponsors, to all our golfers, to all our volunteers, to those who came for dinner and to those who donated raffle prizes! We ended up with almost 80 golfers and 100 for dinner so we were all pleased with our numbers. Chevy Chase does a nice job for us every year; however, we’re thinking of changing the joint outing to a private country club next year but it will cost more per golfer. Would you golf in the outing if we held it at the Evanston Country Club and charged $60 more per person? I hear that TRUE golfers would jump at the chance to play a private course so let me know what you think!
Park Ridge won two of the 3 big raffle prizes!
1st: 16 GB iPad with Wi-Fi (value $500) – Kane Connell, co-chair of the golf outing and branch manager of Liberty Bank for Savings won the grand prize! Kane starts on his MBA this week so it was a perfect prize for him to win!
2nd: Dinner for 4 at Evanston Golf Club (value $400) – Dick Barton won this prize which includes dinner, wine, tax and tip!
3rd: ‘Legally Blonde’ – 2 Tickets (value $100) – a Skokie member won this prize which was donated by Dave Sherman (one of my board members)
Thank you to our sponsors for the golf outing!
