Bring your business card into the 21st century!
If you or your business is on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc. why not let colleagues know they can contact you through those avenues as well? If you’re not sure how to incorporate those ideas into a current business card take a look at the article below. Here’s a preview of the article: Erica Swallow writes: “While the traditional business card trend is still going strong, you may want to consider optimizing the space on that little piece of paper. A growing number of professionals are finding it useful to include social media links on their business cards. Including social links on your card not only showcases your progressive approach, but it also gives your contacts more choices in how they communicate with you.”...

Gail's Weekly Chamber UPDATE

Got a facial at Anthony Valentino’s Salon & Spa this weekend (after the electronics recycling so I needed it!) and used a Gleeday voucher that I purchased a while back -- what a treat! Nikki was great.
Lian went to the Pickwick to see Secretariat and loved it – thanks, Marci! And of course Lian also skated at Oakton Ice and did her StageCoach Theatre. Son, Dirk, got his hair cut at the new SportClips and LOVED it! He also bought his girlfriend a gift certificate for a massage with Laura T. Clark Massage. And he’s still working at Houlihan’s!
Please shop Chamber members first! That’s what I always try to do.
Oh, and don’t forget - Perry’s Pizzeria is hosting a fundraiser this week through Halloween with 10% of the proceeds donated to the Park Ridge Community Fund when you mention the PR Community Fund! Call them at 847.823.4422.

300 Cars in 3 Hours!

The Park Ridge Chamber of Commerce and the City of Park Ridge together hosted an electronics recycling event at the Public Works garage on October 23. Sponsored by Liberty Bank for Savings, Maine Township, and Highway Commissioner Robert Provenzano, the event was a resounding success with 300 vehicles coming through the garage in 3 hours!

"We typically average 100 cars per hour for the three previous electronics recycling we’ve sponsored in Park Ridge so we were right on target," stated Kane Connell, Chair of the event and branch manager of the Park Ridge Liberty Bank for Savings.

"Having this event indoors made all the difference since it was chilly and raining most of the morning," exclaimed Gail Haller, executive director, Park Ridge Chamber. “A huge thank you to Mike McGrath from Public Works who worked so hard to make this happen!”

D'Agostino's Pizzeria provided the delicious pizza for the 50 hungry volunteers which included the Sheriff’s Work Alternative Program (SWAP); Kiwanians Mike McGrath, Joe Sweeney, and Tony Tripp; the Citizens’ Patrol under Gary K. Warner’s leadership who handled traffic control; and Chamber members Wes Davis and Dick Barton. Also, thank you to Ed Graham in the Public Works Sign Shop, who made all the signs for the event.

Special thank you to the 300 residents who came through with their used computer equipment, household batteries, and cell phones (which will go to the Cell Phones for Soldiers program).

Information about the Park Ridge Chamber and future events can be found at www.ParkRidgeChamber.org or call 847-825-3121 or email info@parkridgechamber.org.

October 22: Chamber Member News

I had 2 board meetings this past Tuesday! Both the Chamber and the Community Fund met on the 3rd Tuesday of the month but now the PRCF will start meeting on the 1st Wednesday of each month! It was a hectic and long day, but a satisfying one.

I just sent you a reminder about the Multi Chamber Expo & Taste from 3 to 6 p.m. today at Bristol Courts – last year we had 500 people come through! And its free to attend. Barton & Barton is a major sponsor so stop and say hi to them. I’ll be there taking pictures and greeting – plus looking for likely candidates for membership to our Chamber!

Remember that this Saturday is the Electronics Recycling on Saturday at Public Works. We’re ready for you! Thank you to Mike McGrath, Public Works, for hosting so rain or shine, we’re on! Also thank you to our sponsors Liberty Bank for Savings, Maine Township, and Robert Provenzano. See announcement at bottom of this email.

Exclusive 4 course Tuscan Italian Pairing Wine Dinner featuring Banfi Wines.

Carlucci Rosemont

Dinner 7:00pm

$80.00 per person
Please RSVP to Robyn Wall by October 30, 2010

This event is hosted by Philip DiBelardino, Italian wine expert
and vice president of Banfi.

Philip DiBelardino is often described as a stand-up comedian passing himself off as a wine connoisseur. Well, he's both. The genial vice president of fine wines for leading US importer Banfi Vintners hosts about 100 tastings and winemaker dinners every year to promote the firm's offerings to select consumer groups. He claims that humor, usually self-effacing, captures an audience's attention-and holds it. "While listening for the next quip or joke, they absorb a lot of critical information." Filippo, as he is known in the trade, began his wine career in 1973 in his family's business, Mediterranean Imports. He held a key position with the company when it was sold a decade later and continued as a spokesman for an extensive and prestigious portfolio of European brands at Palace Brands/Dieageo until he joined Banfi in 1999.

During the month of November, Cardinal Fitness locations throughout the Midwest are hosting an annual food drive to benefit local charities in need this season. Members of the community are encouraged to bring in non-perishable food items to help support this great cause.

"As a community-based fitness center, Cardinal Fitness focuses on giving back and staying involved in our neighborhood,” said Dan Collins, Cardinal Fitness Director of Sales. “We receive an overwhelming amount of support from our members each year. It’s great to see everyone in the community work together to help make a difference.”

This year’s food drive will begin November 1 and run through the end of the month. Donated food will benefit such charities as: the Greater Chicago Food Depository, Food Bank of Northwest Indiana, and the Foodbank in Dayton, OH. Everyone is encouraged to stop by their local Cardinal Fitness location and get involved today.

For more information on Cardinal Fitness’s efforts and how you can help, please visit cardinalfitness.com. Cardinal Fitness fans can follow us online at facebook.com/cardinalfitness and at twitter.com/cardinalfitness

I would appreciate it if you would forward this to your friends and neighbors who may be affected. And
also remind them they can go the www.parkridgemayor.com and sign up to be on the e-mail list themselves.

Many of you have heard of a proposal to erect cell phone towers at
Northeast Park and South Park. A number of people believe this was
planned by the City and are upset that they were not involved in the
decision-making process. In fact, the cell phone proposal originated
with the Park Ridge Park District which is a completely separate
governmental body over which the City exerts no control. The cell
towers would be erected on Park District property pursuant to a
contract between the cell phone company and the Park District.

However, the cell phone company and the Park District are still
required to go through the regular zoning process, in this case, a
request for a special use permit. The public hearing for the cell
tower special use permit application will commence in front of the
City's Planning and Zoning Commission next Tuesday, October 26 at
730pm in the City Council Chambers at City Hall, I will not use the
space to try to explain the complexities of that process or whether
there are any federal laws which impact on that process. The bottom
line is that the Commission will hear from the applicant and any
resident who wishes to speak on the issue and will then vote on making
a recommendation to the City Council. I have asked our City Attorney
to be prepared to address the legal issues at that meeting.

Meanwhile, I spoke with a member of the Park District Board who
alerted me to the fact that the Board is having a meeting THIS
Thursday, October 21 at 730pm at Maine Park, 2701 West Sibley. The
cell towers issue is not on the Board's meeting agenda. However, like
City Council meetings, there is a potion of the meeting set aside for
comments from the public. Anyone who wishes to express his or her
opinion about this issue directly to the Park Board should take this
opportunity to do so.

I hope this helps to clear things up a little bit.

The City of Park Ridge and the Park Ridge Chamber of Commerce will host a one day collection for the recycling of electronics on Saturday, October 23, 2010, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Public Works Service Center, 400 Busse Highway. Thanks to our major sponsors: Liberty Bank for Savings, Maine Township, and Highway Commissioner Robert Provenzano!
There will be a fee of $5 per car, however the Chamber of Commerce will distribute a $5 coupon good towards a $20 purchase at participating Chamber members.
Only the following items will be accepted:
• All computer related equipment
• TV’s, VCR and DVD players
• MP3 players
• PDA’s
• Video game consoles
• Audio visual equipment
• Cell phones will be donated to www.cellphonesforsoldiers.com

Weekly Chamber Update

Personally, from Gail
What a fun weekend – I attended Rainbow Hospice Angels Ball and it was fabulous! Record attendance of almost 800 and everyone was bidding on all the amazing silent auction items. When the guest of honor, Father John Cusick spoke, you could have heard a pin drop. At our table were Diddy Blyth, Ann Witek, Theresa Olson, Susan Scatchell, Lori Annetti – all fun ladies! We danced to the Gentlemen of Leisure band whom we loved from the Lake Effect event and enjoyed a delicious steak dinner which was hot and perfectly prepared (for 800 people!). Held at Hyatt Regency O’Hare, another member, so we stayed over and had a wonderful breakfast in their lobby restaurant (I love Eggs Benedict and their Hollandaise was perfect!). All in all, a memorable occasion made more so by the special people of Rainbow Hospice and their great works.

Gail's Weekly Chamber UPDATE

My Member News eblast didn’t get out until Friday and then when I came in this morning, I noticed that I had 400 emails stuck in my outbox so if you got it this morning, that’s why. Had to reboot and restart, etc. but it finally got out.
So I apologize if you get 2 eblasts from me today – I try not to send more than one in a day.
I hope you’re enjoying this beautiful weather – I’ve been driving around all weekend with the top down on my little convertible and have been soaking up the rays!
Friday evening, my friend Lori and I had dinner at Hay Caramba! On Saturday, Lian went to StageCoach Theatre Arts which she loves – then we headed to Tasty Pup for lunch! Walked over to the library, drove over to the Shell at Greenwood and Touhy (the only gas station that is a Chamber member!). And Lian went ice skating at Oakton.
Had dinner on Thursday with Lian at Jason’s Deli for the fundraiser for the Park Ridge Community Fund!
I love doing business with Chamber members – everyone mentioned is a Chamber member!
October 13, Wednesday, 11:30am – 1:30pm Monthly Networking Luncheon at Romano’s Family Pizzeria & Sports Bar, 27 S. Northwest Hwy. Come have a fabulous meal at the newest restaurant in town!

Speaker Rebecca Palumbo from Rollins Palumbo Creative: Learn how to use your business marketing dollars wisely in challenging economic times.
Member $25, Prospective Member and Walk Ins with no rsvp $30.

I’d like to print up some fun, fast facts for the member news. Send me a one-liner about your business that I can do a title “Did you know…?”
For example, did you know…
… that Barb at All on the Road Catering hosted 15 Indian Guides and their dads for pizza making and brownie baking last week so they could earn a badge?
…the Chamber’s map will go out in the Pioneer Press October 21 edition to every household in Park Ridge whether they have a subscription or not?
…that the Park Ridge Community Fund will also have an insert in the Pioneer Press October 21 edition requesting donations for the charities that support Park Ridge friends and neighbors?
Aren’t those interesting fun, fast facts? So send me something short and sweet and I’ll do a list of them! I can only print what I know so if you don’t tell me, I can’t print them!

Chamber’s Fall Membership Drive Needs You!

The Park Ridge Chamber of Commerce Fall Membership Drive is gaining momentum, but we still need your help! Do you know a business that you can refer? Member News as of October 8th

Though the Members News is normally out on Thursday, yesterday was such a busy day! I was at Jason’s Deli last night for the fundraiser for the Park Ridge Community Fund and also got a massage from Laura T. Clark Massage, 847-707-5462. For my husband’s birthday on Oct. 5, we ordered from Perry’s Pizzeria, 847-823-4422, – they have great double dough pizzas that he loves! And we had Pro Windows, 847-825-4890, over to replace a broken window in our house! Wherever possible, I always try to spend my money with Chamber members first – hope you do too!

The maps will be out in the Oct. 21 Pioneer Press mailing to every home in Park Ridge. Also included is the Park Ridge Community Fund request for donations so please look for both items.
The mother of Diane Forsythe and Karen Nelson, and grandmother of Eric Nelson, passed away this week. Our deepest sympathy to the entire family. Services will be in Wisconsin.

MB Financial Bank is dedicated to being a part of the “pink” movement during October to help find a cure for breast cancer. A supporter of the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk since 2002, for every new MB Red Checking account opened from October 1 through October 31, 2010, MB will donate $10 to the American Cancer Society. By opening an MB Red Checking account, you’ll not only help fund research to find a cure for a disease that has touched too many lives, but you’ll also be getting a checking account that pays a very strong rate at a time when interest rates are low on savings accounts and basically non-existent with many checking accounts. MB Red Checking is especially attractive to those who use Internet banking and bill pay and a debit card for nearly all of their purchases.

To add another $10 to MB’s American Cancer Society donation and to learn more about MB Red Checking, members and friends and family of the Park Ridge Chamber of Commerce can go to www.RedChecking.com , call me at 847-745-3580 or visit the Park Ridge Branch at 1014 Busse Highway at Oakton Street.

Sept. 27, 2010 Weekly Chamber Update

September 27, 2010
Weekly Chamber Update

Personally, from Gail

Tonight is the discussion at City Hall regarding the doubling of business license fees. I will be there and would enjoy having Chamber members there too.
The Park Ridge Chamber of Commerce board passed a motion to state to the City Council that the Chamber is in opposition to increasing the cost of business licenses.
I’ll have copies of emails that members sent to me and if given the opportunity to read them, I will. If you need the emails for our mayor and alderman again, here they are:
Mayor David Schmidt

Please take a moment to email your Alderman regarding your opinion on the doubling of the fees.

PRCF & Jason’s Deli
Thursday! I sent out the flyer last week but want to remind you that this Thursday, Oct. 7 Jason’s Deli is donating 10% on dine-in sales to the Park Ridge Community Fund. Please turn in the flyer I sent you last week.
Autumnfest
Autumnfest started Saturday! The idea behind it is to get residents and visitors to come out and shop locally by giving them a fun, free community event to enjoy with their families, friends, and neighbors.
Senator Dan Kotowski and his son, Cooper, stepped off the Costumed Pet Parade, cut the ribbon for the Windows on Parade, and encouraged everyone to shop locally and support our Park Ridge merchants.
30 scarecrows were made with everyone saying what a wonderful event it was! We have 4 bales of hay (straw) left over and they’re here by the Chamber’s east/back door – we paid $10 each so if you’d like to buy one, please come and pick it up! It’s good for winterizing your flower beds, I hear. If we sell these last 4 bales then we will have broken even for the hay!
Thank you to Craig Morse, Uptown Chiropractic Clinic who picked up ten bales of hay and delivered them to the library grounds! Also, thank you to the Retail Committee, chaired by Linda Hills, Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, for organizing the event. And to Kate Hall, PR Public Library, and Kathleen Frey, Pioneer Press, for staying the entire day to help out. Lisa Ross and LuAnn McNaughton from Lisa’s Homemade Italian Ice, Mary McNulty from All on the Road Catering who handed out free apple cider donut holes, and Linda Hills were also there. Theresa Olson, Resurrection, wo-manned the Chamber Membership table alongside the PRPD officers who were handing out literature on the Citizens Police Academy. Rotary was there, stopping polio, with their ‘purple pinky’ painting (for awareness)!

Business After Hours at Dominic’s Kitchen Store last Thursday Our monthly networking business after hours was last Thursday at Dominic’s Kitchen Store, 116 Main Street.

Chamber members enjoyed 15% off everything in the store and got to see Dominic’s ever-popular “NEW GADGET DEMO”! It’s always fun to see what’s new and Dom always has lots of toys!!

I bought a silicon roll for my baking sheets, a universal pot/pan lid, and another pizza pan that Lian said was a must-have!

As always, thanks, Dominic, to you and your staff for hosting another successful Chamber networking event!

October is our Annual Membership Drive! Fall into Savings! Support the Annual PRCC Membership Drive.

The Park Ridge Chamber of Commerce is kicking off it’s a fall membership drive for the month of October! Your recommendation is our best form of promotion. As a way to thank you for your support, we’re offering special gifts for you during the month.
