Gail's Weekly Chamber UPDATE

Hope you had a wonderful and filling Thanksgiving! We sure did at our niece’s house – there must have been 35 people and everyone brought a dish so there were tons of delectable dishes and desserts! We all had to waddle out of there!
Did you come out for Winterfest on Friday? The weather was cold but clear and the double decker buses all were crowded. Let me know how your business did for Winterfest!
Deborah Oberschelp, Affordable Interiors by Deborah (312-909-1255), is decorating my home this week so if you want her to decorate your home or office for the holidays, call her now as she’s booking up! She uses your decorations but changes them in ways that make you think they’re new!

The winner of the “Best Decorated House” for Winterfest 2010 went to Tom and Kathy Schmit at 520 S. Prospect. Thank you to the Park Ridge Garden Club for judging the contest for Winterfest!

We are accepting nominations for the Community Star awards. Think about who you’d like to nominate for this prestigious award – someone who
 Giver – goes beyond normal duties with extra effort in community building
 Citizenship Role Model – is someone whom others (particularly young people) look up to and can model himself or herself after
 Visionary – makes positive change(s) by introducing initiatives and community-wide programs

Buy Chamber gift certificates as teacher, coach, co-worker, scout leader gifts and they can now spend them at any store in Park Ridge that accepts them. We used to waive the service fee for Chamber members and the board recently voted to waive all service fees indefinitely for all merchants – so spread the word!
I’m looking for sponsors for our December 26 St Paul of the Cross Sunday Night Supper. This is the first time the Chamber is sponsoring a Sunday night supper and I’d love to do it annually.

All on the Road Catering graciously and generously will provide the meal for just $5 per person and we’ll provide the drinks, desserts and volunteers.

Whatever you can afford would be appreciated! I figure the total costs to be about $600.

Also, keep in mind that 720 Garden is a food drop off center for Maine Township Food Pantry.
There are 2 available advertising spots in our monthly newsletter, Chamber Connection, ad sheet for business card size ads, normally $25 per month but if you pay for a full year, only $250 for 12 months (you get 2 months free!)

The Park Ridge Community Fund is selling raffle tickets: $10 each or 3 for $25.

• Grand prize is a 16 GB Apple iPad with WiFi! (donated by a generous benefactor!)
• 2nd prize is a necklace and earring set designed and created by award-winning Suzann Wilson, Beadphoria
• More prizes include a Bardot Spiral Bracelet by Stella & Dot ($50 value); a $50 Chamber gift certificate

Would you like to donate a gift card or something from your business? It benefits the Park Ridge Community Fund. If you’d like to buy raffle tickets, send your check payable to “Park Ridge Community Fund” and we’ll enter you.

The drawing will be held on Sunday, December 12, at the showing of “It’s a Wonderful Life” at the Pickwick, sponsored by Liberty Bank for Savings.

Ok, it’s a little self-serving, but…

Jim Schmitt, Ringside Heating & Air Conditioning said, “A doctor in Boston called the Chamber for work on his rental properties in Park Ridge. The Chamber referred him to Ringside and he called me. It has turned into on-going business for me! Thank you to the Chamber!”

So it you have a testimonial about the Chamber or about another Chamber member, send it to me! We may pick your’s to be in the newsletter!

Gao;

Can you believe how mild our fall has been? Makes me wonder if winter will also be as mild or will it hit us with a vengeance?
Another busy weekend! Lian had her final performance at StageCoach on Saturday for the season and will start up again in January.
Also on Saturday, my friend, Lori Annetti and her daughter Kendall, Lian, and I went up and down Prospect and Courtland delivering flyers to all the houses informing him of the 2nd Annual “Best Decorated House” Contest we’re sponsoring in time for Winterfest then dinner at Hay Caramba!
The Park Ridge Garden Club is judging the houses along the bus route and the winner gets $100 Chamber Gift Certificate, a yard sign proclaiming “Winterfest 2010 Best Decorated House” and bragging rights for 12 months! Woo hoo!

Here’s your chance to tell us what you think!

Please complete our satisfaction survey…

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/PRCCSatisfactionSurvey

The survey will close 12/15 at 12 am.
The new member orientation that was scheduled for tomorrow morning with the Ambassadors and board members has been rescheduled to Tuesday, Feb. 23 at 9 a.m.

Did you know that I can send out a dedicated eblast for you to all 600 member contacts for just $50?

When you get an email with a member’s flyer in it, that’s a dedicated eblast they paid the Chamber $50 for.

The Chamber will also sell mailing labels for $50 for one-time use – we call it the hottest list in town!
www.ParkRidgeWinterfest.com

Check out the website for Winterfest. Thank you to Dominic Cimilluca for hosting the website for us!

If you tell us what you’re doing for Winterfest, we’ll add it to the website! The weather will be 32 degrees and only 10% chance of precipitation so the crowds should out!

Don’t forget that you can put a table outside your store for sidewalk sales as long as it doesn’t impede the flow of traffic and is up against your wall.

If you’re serving alcohol, the City says you must get a T3 permit (temporary alcohol license) for $25.

Thank you to our cash sponsors. We’re still looking for donations if you can afford anything:
2 Sisters
Bredemann Toyota
Harris Bank Park Ridge
Ringside Heating & Cooling

Thank you to Liberty Bank for Savings for hosting the Business After Hours last week! About 40 people attended and 5 of them were prospective members I’d not met yet so hopefully they’ll join! We raised $175 for the Park Ridge Community Fund so thank you to those who came and participated.

Rick Pucci, Park Ridge Financial Advisors, and Jorge Garduno, Tech Stuff, presented the talk “I Hate to Budget!” and “Tips to Make your PC Last Longer”. The prime rib was fabulous! The $10 donation per person went to the PR Community Fund.

The Grand Re-Opening and Ribbon Cutting for the Subway in Village Green had a good turnout with tons of food! Go check them out – everything is totally renovated and brand new!

The Women in Business holiday luncheon on Friday at the Hyatt Rosemont was the last WIB event for the year. We’ll start up again in January after the Installation & Community Star Dinner. Thank you to Deborah Oberschelp, Affordable Interiors by Deborah, for a fabulous display of decorating ideas that anyone can do and for teaching us how to make the rosettes. When Deborah decorated my home for the last two years for Christmas, she used old Christmas items in new and different ways that always made me wonder – ‘are these really my things?’ She can do the same for you too!

Just a reminder from Accents by Jenny, flowers and gifts, Thanksgiving is only a few days away! We will have extended holiday hours from 9am-3pm Thanksgiving Day for walk in business with many pre-made centerpieces, cornucopia arrangements, mum plants, fresh bouquets, and fall silk arrangements ready to go!

It will be a wonderful event with wonderful ladies – Deborah Oberschelp and Debra Delaney will be giving us entertaining and decorating tips for the holidays!

Contest your Real Estate Tax Bill I got this letter from Chamber member George Bellas:

“Cook County recently mailed the 2009-second installment tax bills. These bills will be due and payable on December 13, 2010.

You may recall the 2009 1st installment tax bill was payable on March 1, 2010 and was an estimated bill (55% of last year's bill). The balance due for 2009 is reflected on the 2nd installment bill recently mailed.

If your 2009 bill is higher than 2008, it may be the result of:

• a record 13.4% increase in the Cook County equalizer;
• an increase in your local tax rate;
• an increase in the assessment of your property (Chicago was re-assessed for the 2009 tax year).
• The computation of your 2009 taxes will appear on the right-hand side of your 2ndinstallment tax bill.

The Cook County Board reduced assessment percentages of commercial property from 38% of market value to 25% beginning with the 2009 tax year. Despite this change in the law, the Assessor did not reduce 2009 assessments of commercial property to reflect this change. As a result, record numbers of tax appeals were filed in 2010 requesting that a 25% level of assessment be applied to the value of commercial property.

We were able to secure substantial assessment reductions for many of our commercial clients by filing appeals and requesting that the County apply a 25% assessment ratio. If we obtained such a reduction for you, your 2009 bill is lower than it otherwise would have been. Your 2009 bill may or may not be lower than 2008 because the Cook County equalizer increased by 13.4%, which is unprecedented.

If we filed a 2009 appeal to PTAB or the Circuit Court and if we succeed in that appeal, a tax
refund will issue for the amount you overpaid for 2009 together with interest.“

Bill Hominick, Security Director, Park Ridge Youth Campus Gives Tips on Security while Shopping Now you finished your shopping.

To continue staying safe, ask yourself these questions:

• Do you get your keys out before you approach your parked vehicle?
• Do you look into all areas of your car before entering? Walk away and call for help if you suspect an unsafe situation. Intuition should be followed here!
• Do you place packages in the trunk of your car or out-of-sight from potential thieves?
• When arriving home, do you check your surroundings again before exiting your vehicle? If unsure, stay in your car and use your cell to call for help.
• Do you check the identification of all persons delivering packages to your home before you open the door?

A lot of this is just common sense but during the excitement of the holidays, we sometimes forget. To assist, just remember SAFE…Secure, Avoid, Flee, Engage.

Have a safe holiday season!

Gail's Weekly Chamber UPDATE

Another fun weekend – hope yours was too! I went to The Center of Concern’s Bunko luncheon (and won a gift basket!) thanks to Jo Ann Arnswald, MB Financial Bank, and had fun playing Bunko. Went to Washington School Playmakers’ read thru party then Lian did her StageCoach while I attended Park Ridge Juniors fabulous luncheon gala at the Park Ridge Country Club thanks to Aurora Astriaco, had girlfriends over Sat night for game night and then had brunch with an old friend yesterday while Lian ice skated at Oakton. Another full but fun weekend!

Wasn’t our Monthly Networking Luncheon at new member, Gibsons Steakhouse simply fabulous??? The meal was superb – we fed 42 and got a new member out of it (Welcome Marian from Kiddie Kingdom – thanks to Kidwinks.com’s Jean and Nina!).

Dr. Philip Bender new Superintendent of Park Ridge-Niles School District 64 discussed his background and the District’s new strategic plan and activities underway for the 2010-11 school year.

Thank you Anna Kamilis for hosting us at Gibson’s! Their private room is perfect! I had a perfectly prepared steak that was 2 inches thick and a twice baked potato with a side of broccoli that was bigger than my fist! And the desserts were to die for!

If you tell us what you’re doing for Winterfest, we’ll add it to the website!

Also, merchants can put a table outside their store for sidewalk sales as long as it doesn’t impede the flow of traffic and is up against the building wall.

If you’re serving alcohol, the City says you must get a T3 permit (temporary alcohol license) for $25.

Bill Hominick, Security Director, Park Ridge Youth Campus Gives Tips on Security while Shopping Now let’s go shopping.

Instruct your children to contact a store clerk for help if you become separated. Merchants, instruct your staff on what to do if a child is lost or comes to them for help. You may need to lock down the store until the child is located.

Even though you are rushed and thinking about a thousand things, stay alert to your surroundings. Shop during daylight hours whenever possible but if you do shop at night, go with a friend or family member. Merchants, assist your shoppers by watching for suspicious persons lingering around your place of business. Call 911 if unsure.

Try to park in a well-lighted area, avoiding parking next to vans, trucks with camper shells, or cars with tinted windows.

Pay for purchases with a check or credit/debit card. If you carry cash, avoid carrying large sums.

Avoid overloading yourself with packages. It is important to have clear visibility and freedom of motion to avoid mishaps. Merchants, is your holiday displays out of the way of doors, passage ways, or do they prevent sight into your place of business.

Beware of strangers approaching you for any reason. At this time of year, "con-artists" may try various methods of distracting you with the intention of taking your money or belongings.
If you use an ATM machine, do you always use one in a secure location such as inside a mall or store? Shield your PIN number from the view of others. And make sure that you take your purchase or ATM receipts with you, rather than putting them into the trash.

Gail's Weekly Chamber UPDATE

Another gorgeous fall weekend! Went to the book sale at the library on Friday and Saturday and managed to find books to buy both times!
Yesterday we went to The Center of Concern brunch at the Hyatt Rosemont and had a lovely time – and a great brunch!
And Friday was the luncheon fashion show hosted by The Summit of Uptown, fashions by Chico’s, and it raised $1,500 for the Park Ridge Community Fund! Chef Mike DeMilio provided a fabulous lunch of Chicken Kiev with all the trimmings. And The Summit provided tours afterwards of their newly renovated apartments. All in all, so successful that we’re already planning the next one! Thank you to Irene Sawka and Dick Barton for all their hard work.
Are you going to the Northwestern Game this Saturday? If so, Rick Pucci (board member and organizer) says to meet at the Entrance Gate of Wild Cat Alley at 10:30 a.m. for a huge Chamber picture as there will be about 80 members and their guests on hand. We will post the picture online and even try to get it into the newsletter!
Wednesday Monthly Luncheon at Gibsons Bar & Steakhouse This Wednesday, Nov. 10, from 11:30 a.m. -1:30 p.m. is our Monthly Networking Luncheon at new member, Gibsons Steakhouse, 5464 N. River Road, Rosemont.

Dr. Philip Bender new Superintendent of Park Ridge-Niles School District 64 will talk about the District’s new strategic plan and activities underway for the 2010-11 school year.

$25 Member, $30 Prospective Member – and yes, we’re having steak!

Remember that Gibson’s has complimentary valet parking – do NOT go into the parking garage because your ticket will not be validated! Gibson’s is in front of the Doubletree Hotel Chicago O’Hare.

Need your rsvp now please! I’m hoping for a good crowd of 50 or so! Tomorrow I’ll send out a reminder and also publish everyone who’s rsvp’d to date but here’s who we have so far:

1 Philip Bender Park Ridge-Niles School District 64

Thursday is Veterans Day! November 11 is Veterans Day and the Chamber office will be closed.

Many Americans mistakenly believe that Veterans Day is the day America sets aside to honor American military personnel who died in battle or as a result of wounds sustained from combat but that's not quite true.

Memorial Day is the day set aside to honor America's war dead.
Veterans Day, on the other hand, honors ALL American veterans, both living and dead. In fact, Veterans Day is largely intended to thank LIVING veterans for dedicated and loyal service to their country. November 11 of each year is the day that we ensure veterans know that we deeply appreciate the sacrifices they have made in the lives to keep our country free.

I’m proud to be a veteran - I served in the Air Force in the Space Division and worked on the Space Shuttle Program. When I separated from the Air Force, I remained a Captain in the USAF Reserves – which made me sweat a little every time the military started calling up its inactive reservists!

So, on Thursday, hug a Vet! 

Chamber Member News...November 4th

There are just a few spaces left for tomorrow’s Fashion Show at The Summit of Uptown which benefits the Park Ridge Community Fund. Did you know that Tracy Bell (WineStyles), Karen Larsen (Generation Connection) and Sharon Showalter (Chamber Volunteer) are 3 of the models? And that the president of the Community Fund, John Barrett, is being a good sport and escorting the models (along with Marc Dennison)? It’s only $18 per person and includes a fabulous sit down meal, raffle prizes, and tours. Fashions by Chico’s.

Also, I’ve reserved 50 seats for the Wednesday, November 24, performance of Lion King at the Cadillac Palace Theatre. Total cost of each ticket is $87.50 which includes $5 for the Park Ridge Community Fund. If you’re interested, let me know via email and I’ll hold the seats for you. Payment must be made by today with check or credit card as I have to call in payment by end of day or cancel. I know this is short notice so I may reschedule as I don’t yet have enough to make the minimum group sales.

Perry Wein, the local Edward Jones financial advisor, is supporting the Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program by using his office as a drop-off location for this year's toy drive.

The firm's 12,000-plus financial advisors work directly with nearly 7 million clients to understand their personal goals -- from college savings to retirement -- and create long-term investment solutions that emphasize a well-balanced portfolio and a buy-and-hold strategy. Edward Jones embraces the importance of building long-term, face-to-face relationships with clients, helping them to understand and make sense of the investment options available today.
The holiday season is a time when busy people can become careless and vulnerable to theft and other holiday crime. Shopping during the holiday season can present unique dangers. The following tips can help you and your customers be more careful, prepared and aware during the holiday season.

Before leaving, have you inspected the wiring on your holiday light displays to make sure it is not frayed or damaged? Are you dressed casually and comfortably and avoiding wearing expensive jewelry? Have you kept a record of all of your credit card numbers in a safe place to notify the credit card issuer immediately if your credit card is lost, stolen or misused? If possible, do not carry a purse or wallet but be extra careful if you do. They are the prime targets of criminals in crowded shopping areas, transportation terminals, bus stops, on buses and other rapid transit. Instead, carry in your pocket your Driver License or Identification Card along with necessary cash, checks and/or a credit card you expect to use. If your purse or wallet gets stolen, you still have your valuables.
Did you lock the doors and windows, even if you are leaving for just a few minutes? Merchants, same goes for your business, keep your office locked. Do you keep gift-wrapped packages out of sight of windows and doors? When you leave the house, do you leave a radio or television on so that the house seems occupied? And finally, do you carry a cell telephone in case you need to call for help?

Gail's Weekly Chamber UPDATE

Hope you had a fabulous Halloween! We sure did! This was the last weekend for the Farmers Market and everyone was decked out in their Halloween costumes including vendors, adults, kids and dogs! What a fun time. Had breakfast at Le Peep and Lian went to StageCoach for 3 hours then had the family over to celebrate Lian’s 11th birthday.
See you at the library book sale which starts Friday for members and then opens to the public on Saturday with Sunday being ½ price! I love these sales because we get out of date books that the kids can use for reports for school.
Also, we have a few seats available for this Friday’s fashion show luncheon which benefits the Park Ridge Community Fund and is just $18 pp. Please call now so you don’t get left out! Raffle prizes include a dinner cruise for 2 on the Spirit of Chicago, Chamber gift certificates, a lovely handcrafted black shawl by Sheri Roche – and so much more! Hosted by the kind people at The Summit of Uptown.
Get out and vote tomorrow – 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.!

The Chamber showcased its entrepreneurs who often do not have a store front to work out of – many work from home – so they don’t often get to host a Business After Hours. Each business also donated a gift which we raffled off from the business cards of those present. It was a fun time and if you didn’t attend, then you missed out on great networking, foods and prizes!

Women in Business Networking Breakfast, Sandra G. Carey, Psy.D., M.S., Willow Wellness Center gave a wonderful presentation, ‘Eat Away Stress: How Diet can Help to Minimize Depression and Anxiety’ and then Karen Gruber at The Perfect Dinner catered foods from the list that Sandra gave us and made wonderful quiches, fruit salads, cranberry bread, juices and coffee and tea! It was just perfect!
