Gail's Weekly Chamber UPDATE

Marci Derrick and I attended the District 64 ELF Casino Night on Saturday and what a fun time it was! Dr. Bender did a fabulous job as the auctioneer! He missed his calling. As we walked in, the Park Ridge Community Star trophy was highlighted in the foyer - you couldn’t miss it!
Prepare for the blizzard! Hopefully, it’ll pass us by but stay warm and safe as I heard it’s a ‘life-threatening’ storm coming through.
This Saturday is the Wolves game and dinner at the Elks Lodge – it’s a fund raiser for the PR Community fund.
Wide Open West (WOW) cable joined the Chamber!

So, last week we had PREN 2, Health Care Forum, Business After Hours, and Women in Business!

PREN 2: Park Ridge Executive Network meets on the 4th Tuesday each month. Our PREN groups are leads and referral networking groups that meet monthly. In PREN 2 are and they’re looking for one person in Financial Services, a Real Estate Agent, and a Property & Casualty Insurance agent to join them:

Health Care Forum

Eleven organizations got together to discuss what we want to accomplish this year as the Health Care Forum and how best to reach out to our members and to the community. We’re finishing the Mission Statement with Lynda Tourloukis’ guidance. It’s a great group with high expectations of what we can do and accomplish!
What an event it was!

Thank you to Doug Stolz and his friends at Comcast Business Services for sponsoring the January Business After Hours. Thank you to Sergio Lazzara, chef and owner of Affresco for a fabulous time, food and drinks. It was 2 hours of all you could eat and drink of wood burning pizzas of all kinds, calamari, and bruschetta which were all fabulous! I bet we had between 60 and 70 people who came and went throughout the 2 hours! I saw a lot of networking going on and business cards being passed! Thank you, Doug and Sergio, for a great evening!
We had almost almost 50 attend our Women in Business to hear Sima Dahl speak about branding your business using social media – and WOW, was she dynamic, interesting and funny! It was a great presentation!

Panera Bread catered the breakfast with a variety of their fabulous breakfast sandwiches, lots of fresh cut fruit, orange juice and coffee. It was a delicious breakfast! Thank you to Mike, the local manager, and Ginni, the regional manager!

Member Update January 25, 2011

What a marvelous event! Saturday was truly a ‘Night of Stars’! It started with a private reception for the Past Presidents of the Chamber which was hosted by Dave Donovan who looked smashing in his tuxedo! Two lovely Maine South High School students played violas throughout both of the receptions. The PR Country Club always manages such an elegant affair that it takes so little effort on our part – thank you to Tom and his staff for everything. Everyone raved about how delicious the food was! I had the Norwegian Salmon which was excellent! And the Apple Betty dessert was amazing!
Our Community Stars were shining and so was Millie as the first recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award. The speeches were beautiful. Congratulations to the following Community Stars who each received a standing ovation!
• Amphora: Debi Spellman and Diane Annes
• Jim Bruno, Park Ridge Indian Scouts Federation, Holiday Lights Coalition
• ELF: District 64, Elementary Learning Foundation
• Betsy Foxwell, Kalo Foundation of Park Ridge
• Mike McGrath, City of Park Ridge Public Works
• Andrew Terenzio, Maine South High School Student
• Barbara Tyksinski, All on the Road Catering & Bakery
All are sponsors were so generous. Thank you:
• Barton & Barton, Ltd., sponsored the Awards
• Jackie Mathews sponsored the beautiful sparkling table centerpieces
• Theresa Olson, Resurrection Heath Care, sponsored the Community Stars and Millie’s dinners
• Anna Wasyliw, Harris Bank, sponsored the Entertainment
• Greg Alford, Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, was our Special Event Sponsor
• Dave Donovan, EJ Coyne Insurance, sponsored the Past Presidents’ Reception
• Jewel Food Store sponsored all the helium filled blue and silver balloons
• Kiko’s Flowers and Gifts sponsored the flowers worn by the Stars and Millie
• Photography was sponsored by A Sterling Design (Diddy Blyth and Greg Duda
• Quinn Print, Inc. sponsored all the printing of the invitations, programs, etc.
• Martha Berns, Dempsey Design, sponsored all the graphic design of the Stars’ logo,
The Chamber’s 2011 board was inducted by Mayor Dave Schmidt in a solemn swearing in ceremony after which a standing ovation was given! New additions to the board this year are: Alexander Barton, Barton & Barton, Ltd.; Kane Connell, Liberty Bank; Joe Campagna, Grant Merchant Services; Sheila Duda, TeaLula; Kathleen Frey, Pioneer Press; Joshua Nichols, Unbound Technology.
Our entertainment throughout the receptions were two Maine South High School seniors, Grace Householder and Lydia Ramsey, who played viola duets and were magnificent! What a treasure we have in Park Ridge to be able to reach out to our high schools for their musically talented students! Lydia told me that she’s played the viola for 13 years!
Dave Donovan awarded his President’s Award to Dick Barton, Barton & Barton, Ltd., for all his outstanding work on behalf of the Chamber during Dave’s reigning year as president. Dave also passed the gavel to our new president, Jackie Mathews, and presented Karen Anderson, Dental Auxiliary Placement Service, Inc., with a gorgeous plaque as she is leaving the board after serving as an officer for years.
All in all, it was a wonderful event to honor wonderful people. Thank you to all those who made it happen – my staff, Dorothy, Cindy and Marci, and our volunteer Sharon Showalter – and those other kind souls who showed up on Saturday to help: Susan Scatchell, Valerie Niskanen, Dave Donovan, Diane Finney, Lori Annetti, and madame president herself, Jackie Mathews.

The City has three FREE notification modes that residents and business owners can sign up for to receive important community information, traffic problems or emergency announcements. We learned that only a small percentage of the community is registered. We are striving to increase that number so that everyone is kept informed.

To start the signup process, go to the City's website at
www.parkridge.us.

Choose "STAY CONNECTED" on the left side of the home page screen.

When making your selection, you will be taken away from the Park Ridge website to connect with theirs. You will need to return to the City's website at www.parkridge.us to reconnect and make your next selection.

for Small Businesses
Contestants can enter to win an office makeover by submitting a photo and short paragraph
Holly Springs, N.C. –OFM, one of the nation’s leading office and school furniture manufacturers, distributors, and wholesalers, announced it will kick off its “New Year, New Office” contest this weekend. Contestants who own or work at a small business registered in the United States with fifty employees or less can enter to win a new OFM office chair, desk, and storage unit by submitting a photo of their current office and a brief description of why they deserve a makeover.

To enter, contestants must email newyear@ofminc.com with a photo in JPEG format of their current office space and a brief paragraph explaining why they deserve to win. The contest runs from Saturday, Jan. 15, 2011 to Monday, Feb. 28, 2011.
OFM will notify the contest winner by email on Monday, Mar. 7, 2011. The winner will receive the furniture free of cost and free of any shipping or delivery charge, but they will be solely responsible for any taxes.

While in your office,
• Don't leave your valuables unattended, even if it is just for a moment. Purses, book bags, jackets, cellular telephones and laptops all make quick easy targets for thieves.
• Keep these and other valuable items with you at all times or locked in a drawer or closet.
• Keep your office door locked when left vacant.
• Check the identity of any strangers who are in your office. Ask whom they are visiting and if you can help them find that person. If this makes you uncomfortable, inform management about your suspicions. I also recommend that you immediately contact your Security Officer or Department.
• Always let someone know where you'll be, whether it's coming in late, working late, going to the photocopier or mail room, or going out to lunch or a meeting.
• If you bring to work personal items such as a coffee pot, audio equipment, or calculator, mark them with your name or initials and an identification number. Keep a record of any serial numbers.

Member Update January 24

Good morning,

You can read this eblast online here: http://secure.parkridgechamber.org/home/newsletter/default.aspx
That’s where my eblasts will be stored and eventually, I’ll just send the link in my eblasts with teaser headlines. As a result of the member satisfaction survey done by the Membership Committee, several people said my eblasts were too long, so I wanted to make some changes.
All items being donated for the silent auction need to be here at the Chamber by 9:00 a.m. tomorrow in order to be listed in the program. We’re also doing the table assignments so if you want to sit with specific people at specific tables, we need to know that by tomorrow too please.
We’re going to have a fun wine raffle at the event – can you donate a bottle of wine (preferably $20 value). If so, please drop it off at the Chamber.
It really helps us out if you can drop all your offerings off instead of asking us to pick up items. We just have so much to do this week that we’re under the gun to get it all done! Thank goodness for my wonderful staff, Dorothy, Cindy and Marci AND Sharon Showalter, our fabulous volunteer! And everyone else who is pitching in!
We do need help this week and on Saturday – decorating and setting up the silent auction tables so if you have time, call or email and let us know. Thank you!

Gail's Weekly Chamber UDPATE

Thank you!

January 22 Installation & Community Stars Dinner Please help us honor the 2010 Community Stars at our annual dinner on Saturday, January 22, at the Park Ridge Country Club.
Congratulations to the following Community Stars:
• Amphora: Debi Spellman and Diane Annes
• Jim Bruno, Park Ridge Indian Scouts Federation, Holiday Lights Coalition
• ELF: District 64, Elementary Learning Foundation
• Betsy Foxwell, Kalo Foundation of Park Ridge
• Mike McGrath, City of Park Ridge Public Works
• Andrew Terenzio, Maine South High School Student
• Barbara Tyksinski, All on the Road Catering & Bakery
The first ever Park Ridge Lifetime Achievement Award will also be presented to Millie O’Brien. Please join us to congratulate and celebrate them on Saturday, January 22, 2011, at the Park Ridge Country Club!

Silent Auction Thank you to all our silent auction donors! We have more than 60 items valued at $17,000! The Washington School PTO Playmakers are performing a musical comedy for the 50th year!

Many Chamber members are involved or have been involved in Playmakers over the years. I’m proud of my 6 years on stage! Ben Wilson, Falkor Group; Mary Wynn Ryan, Winning Ways Marketing; Dave Donovan, EJ Coyne Insurance; Martha Berns, Dempsey Design; Georgine Donovan, The Red Herring Studio – I know there’s more but these talented Playmakers and Alums are off the top of my head.

You can advertise in their program and congratulate them for 50 years! Any questions or artwork may be directed to Suzanne at henn2henn@yahoo.com.
