Rotary The Park Ridge Rotary Club and The Park Ridge Chamber of Commerce Hold Combined Meeting
The Park Ridge Rotary Club and Park Ridge Chamber of Commerce had their 2nd Annual Combined lunch meeting at the Summit of Park Ridge on February 16, 2011. Diane Forsythe, President of Park Ridge Rotary, and Gail Haller, Executive Director of the Chamber of Commerce, were co-chairpersons. Carol Pandak of Rotary International was the key note speaker and spoke about Rotary International’s “End Polio Now” campaign.
As many of us are aware, polio has been eradicated in US for decades but it still is an ongoing threat in some parts of the world. Rotary has taken on the goal of completely eliminating polio world wide. This is accomplished by immunizing children in the few third world countries where polio still exists. Until polio is completely eradicated an outbreak is just one airplane ride away from reemerging anywhere in the world.
The Rotary International Foundation recently received a donation of $ 100,000 from a member of the Park Ridge Rotary Club. The donation was designated for use on the “End Polio Now” campaign. With this donation, 500,000 more children will receive the polio vaccine.
The Park Ridge Chamber of Commerce is a growing dynamic organization of local businesses with many new members. At their recent VIP dinner, attended by more than 200 people, Park Ridge Mayor Dave Schmidt installed the new slate of officers and Dave Donovan passed the Presidential gavel to Ms. Jackie Matthews of Rainbow Hospice.

Rotary again! The Park Ridge Rotary Club Donates “Coats for Kids” to The Center of Concern.
The Park Ridge Rotary Club donated 30 “Coats for Kids”, just in time for the recent extremely cold weather, to the Park Ridge based non-profit organization The Center of Concern. The Center will distribute the coats to needy children in the area. Even with this donation, there is still a waiting list of kids who need coats. This is the second annual “Coats for Kids” program that the Park Ridge Rotary Club has teamed up with the Center to help kids.
The Center of Concern, located on Northwest Hwy in Park Ridge, is not-for-profit agency offering social services to local area people in need. They have 14 professionals and over 200 dedicated volunteers on staff.
The Park Ridge Rotary Club is a volunteer group of business and community leaders to help others locally, nationally, and internationally. Rotary International has over 1.2 million members in over 200 hundred countries worldwide.

Macular degeneration is the leading cause of visual impairment and blindness in the older population. According to the CDC (Center of Disease Control and Prevention), an estimated 2 million people have macular degeneration, which is expected to increase to almost 3 million by 2020. Meanwhile, another 7.3 million people are at substantial risk for vision loss from macular degeneration.

It may be possible for patients to decrease their risk of macular degeneration by following a plan that emphasizes a diet containing foods high in omega-3 fatty acids (eating fish i.e.salmon), lutein, and zeaxanthin (eating green vegetables, especially leafy green), following a healthy lifestyle (exercising, not smoking, try not to be obese), and protecting the eyes from the damaging effects of blue light (UV).
Nutritional supplements such as vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc and omega 3 have been shown effective at reducing the risk of macular degeneration. Nutritional supplements such as lutein and zeaxanthin have been shown to prevent macular degeneration. Results from the Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) showed that high levels of antioxidants and zinc reduce the risk of advanced macular degeneration and its associated vision loss. As with all supplements, various nutrients and vitamins may be contraindicated due to an underlying systemic condition (like heart disease and diabetes), so please ask your doctor first.

Gail's Weekly Chamber UPDATE

There is a lot going on this week! I hope you can one or two or all of the events! New Member orientation, Business After Hours, and Women in Business – just to name a few!
Here’s an example of two Chamber members working together: Coldwell Banker is having a fundraising event tomorrow at Houlihan’s for the Ronald McDonald House from 11:00 A.M. – 11:00 P.M. and Houlihan’s will donate 20% of food sales to Ronald McDonald House Charities of Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana on behalf of Coldwell Banker. Pick up a flyer at the Coldwell Banker front reception desk at 27 N. Northwest Hwy, Park Ridge before 7 p.m. tomorrow as you need to show it at Houlihan’s.

Last week we had a fabulous luncheon at the Summit of Uptown where we had the joint Rotary and Chamber meeting and heard Carol Pandak talk about the Rotary’s efforts to eradicate polio.
When you attend our monthly luncheon, you have the opportunity to throw your business card in a drawing to be in the ‘Spotlight’ for our monthly newsletter: Chamber Connection! So Nichole Squires from Comfort Inn/O’Hare was selected. That’s one of the many rewards and benefits of attending the monthly networking luncheon!
Tell me your story – have you done business with people you’ve met at the luncheons? Or at other Chamber events – I’d love to tell your story!
Last week was Valentines Day – I know of 2 birthdays – Chris Valentine (how appropriate!), Edward Jones, and our very own Chamber president, Jackie Mathews from Rainbow Hospice both celebrate Valentine birthdays.
Dorothy celebrated her 11th anniversary with the Chamber on Feb. 16 – which is also my wedding anniversary!
What’s your celebration?
The Chamber Board met last week and approved two new members:
1. Wide Open West Phone, Internet, and Cable
2. River 596 Apartments (they’re having a big open house party – read down for it!)
The Board also approved 2 motions to:
i. Support the efforts to save the Iannelli Studios
ii. Support a reinstatement of the funding for the façade improvement program by the Park Ridge City Council.

Kalo: 2/20 Fundraiser A program about Margaret Iannelli entitled “The Fragile Flower” will be presented at Park Ridge Community Church Sunday, Feb. 20, at 1 p.m. by Tim Samuelson, cultural historian for the City of Chicago.
Come and find out all about the “other Iannelli” who lived and worked at Iannelli Studios in Park Ridge. Park Ridge Chamber of Commerce is supporting the effort to preserve the building at 255 N. Northwest Highway which is the subject of a zoning hearing Tuesday, Feb. 22, at City Hall at 7 p.m.
The Save Iannelli Studios preservation group is asking that a rezoning from B1 to R4 be denied or deferred in order to give the group adequate time to pursue the vision of transforming the building that most people know in Park Ridge as the former Audrey's Calico and Old Lace into a vibrant community gathering place energized by every facet of the Park Ridge art colony legacy.
Because of a matching grant from an anonymous donor, it is within the grasp of the group to preserve this building providing an extraordinary opportunity for Park Ridge to tell this gripping story and its connection to our town. Donations for the Sunday program ($5 is suggested) will benefit the effort. Donations may also be sent to Kalo Foundation, P.O. Box 791, Park Ridge, IL 60068.
http://kalofoundation.org/

Betsy adds:
On Feb. 22th we need everyone at the Planning & Zoning meeting. Be at City Hall by 6:45 PM so we can give you a talking point. Nancy Frugoli has made us silver ribbons to wear. BRING people with you. We need numbers.

We are collecting about $300.00 per day. We need $2,000.00 per day to meet our goal by July 4th. PLEASE ask your friends & neighbors to donate or at least send them a brochure.

Rotary Rotary Provides X-ray System for Street Children of Guatemala City.

Two-thirds of the world’s population does not have access to basic X-ray services. That is a huge problem since sixty percent of all medical diagnoses require X-ray analysis.

John VandenBrink, a long time member of the Park Ridge Rotary Club, initiated a program to solve this world wide problem. The program is called WHIS-RAD, World Health Imaging System for Radiology. It is a low-cost, high-tech X-ray system designed to meet World Health Organization needs. The system is supplied by World Health Imaging, Telemedicine, and Informatics Alliance (WHITIA), a not-for-profit corporation founded by Rotarians, Northwestern University and suppliers of the equipment.

The latest installation was in Guatemala City, and will help the street children and the poor. To honor that occasion and the people involved in the installation, the Park Ridge Rotary Club presented a check to Ms. Ivy Walker, the CEO of WHIS-RAD, at the club’s regular noon meeting on January 26, 2011 at the Summit of Park Ridge. The money will help further the work of WHIZ-RAD.

Workplace Violence
Submitted by Bill Hominick, The Youth Campus For decades, companies and managers have become more aware of the issue of workplace violence. Most have procedures in place to deal with such threats. Numerous negative external issues like finances and job security could relate to an increase in violence. Understanding this, there are two key aspects that require handling of this problem. Managers must assess the likelihood that a person who makes a threat might really act on it and how to respond in ways that simultaneously defuse the threat and protect vulnerable people, while your company engages in appropriate job actions or other protective procedures.

Usually, when managers become aware of a threatening situation they respond by increasing security, calling law enforcement, seek an order of protection or restraining order, or if an employee, refer the employee to an Employee Assistance Program or begin termination proceedings.

The majority of people who make threats do not end up acting out violently. But the consequence of an act of violence, however unlikely it may be, is potentially severe. Additionally, the perception of an unsafe work environment by employees requires appropriate management action. Thus it is your obligation, as well as a matter of common sense, to do everything within reason to make sure violence and the perception of imminent violence do not occur.

The single best predictor of future violent behavior is past violent behavior. This is especially true when a person has a history of violent or threatening behavior, for example being a former member of a gang or being allowed to feel powerful, manipulate people or get what they want.

Next month, we’ll discuss ways to uncover past behavior and ways to assess a threatening employee’s frame of mind. Till then, respond to each case of workplace violence as it were real, because it just may be.

Chamber Update 2/9/2011

February 7, 2011
Weekly Chamber Update

From Gail,

The snow fell and it was beautiful! I loved being inside and cooking while the blizzard raged outside! Thank you to everyone who plowed, shoveled, and otherwise made it safer for the rest of us! I thought the City’s communications were great – and when they recommended we stay off the streets, I listened! Hope you did too and everyone survived it intact!
Due to the blizzard, everything got a little behind but you can view our newsletter online at:
http://secure.parkridgechamber.org/home/files/newsletters/newsletter.pdf
It will be in your mailbox shortly!

Last Week’s Events Well, aside from the Blizzard of 2011, we also had our North Suburban Young Professionals Networking Event which was the pre-SuperBowl party; the EKG meeting at Regus with Jim Cone, WSI, speaking about using Google for your business; the Membership Committee met and the 5th Annual Chicago Wolves Hockey Dinner occurred last Saturday!
On Tuesday just before the Blizzard, I judged a high school DECA competition for the 3rd year in a row along with Chamber members Joe Campagna (Grant Merchant Services), Susan Frangos (Higher Level Wellness) and Eric Nelson (Nelson Automotive). Always a good time – we each judged 14 to 15, depending upon the category. Thanks, Joe, Sue and Eric for helping out – they always need judges each year so let me know if you want to be on the list for next year. Just another way the Chamber works with our schools!

Mark Your Calendar for these Chamber Networking Events! All meetings are held at 720 Garden unless specifically mentioned:

It's a big complex app; no matter how many tricks you know for this league-leading email client, there are always more to learn. Come see what you can do to improve your productivity.

Norwood Seniors Network JOIN A WINNING COMMUNITY OUTREACH TEAM OF
MEAL-DELIVERY VOLUNTEERS

To meet the increasing need of older adults who want to remain independent in their homes, Norwood Seniors Network is now preparing to expand its meal-delivery service and is looking for more great volunteers. Those who have given a part of their time one or more days a week are deserving of special thanks, and they are asking you to join them in this rewarding and satisfying experience. The not-for-profit Norwood Seniors Network, at 6009 N. Nina Ave. in Chicago, provides freshly-prepared nutritious meals each weekday for delivery to homes in northwest Chicago or near northwest suburbs by a handful of volunteers who use mapped routes. Each route takes from one-to-two hours to complete. Volunteers bring a bright smile, some cheer and light conversation to persons who may have few if any visitors during the day. Meal deliveries are made between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., Mondays through Friday, and volunteers can assist for one or more days a month.
Persons interested in volunteering must have their own vehicle and insurance. For more information, please call Bryan Manasse, Norwood Life Care Foundation, at (773) 577-5387, email him at bmanasse@norwoodlifecare.org, or visit www.norwoodlifecare.org.
