Gail's Weekly Chamber UPDATE

My friend, Lori Annetti, and I attended the Rainbow Hospice Angels Ball on Saturday and had a fabulous time! What a heartwarming, exciting event it was! Saw many familiar faces among the 600 attendees. The Hyatt Regency O’Hare did a superb job too! Hope you can make it next year!

Just a comment that you’ve all been very generous with your invitations and I really wish I could make every event that I get invited to but it’s just not possible. But I really appreciate being invited!
Lunch at Riggio’s last week Todd Wessel spoke at our networking luncheon last Wednesday to a crowd of about 30 people. He discussed the new book he authored about his great uncle, Chic Harley. It’s entitled “The one and only: Chic Harley – America’s Great Athlete”. Todd is also the editor of the Journal Newspapers.

The luncheon is at Riggio Ristorante, 7530 Oakton Niles, 847-698-3346 was delicious! They served it family style and we had fresh green salad, roasted chicken, potatoes, pasta and dessert!

Thank you to both Todd Wessell and Riggio’s!

Winners of the raffle prizes:
Mary Schurder, Center of Concern, won the Chamber newsletter insert, valued at $150!

Kirsten Leys and Rick Pucci each won a Park Ridge Taxi voucher worth $20 good to or from O’Hare/Park Ridge! Thank you to Dean Dinev for donating the vouchers!

You’re always welcomed to bring raffle prizes from your business for us to raffle off!

Gail's Weekly Chamber UPDATE

Lian and I spent Saturday morning at the library kickoff of AutumnFest: Windows on Parade! What a successful event it was! The costumed pet parade was adorable – there were over 50 animals, mostly dogs, in all types of cute costumes! Senator Kotowski and his son, Cooper, led the parade around the library; did the honors of the ribbon cutting to kick off AutumnFest and unveiled the library’s decorated window.

The event was sponsored by the Chamber’s Retail Committee and the idea was to have residents come out for a free event and shop Park Ridge. We have over 50 stores participating and the library is sponsoring contests which have hundreds of dollars in prizes donated by the various merchants. AutumnFest continues through Halloween!

A special thank you to Linda Hills, Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, who is the chair of the Retail Committee; to Kate Hall, Park Ridge Public Library, for coming up with the I Spy and Scavenger hunt games. Kate also created the website www.prautumnfest.wordpress.com and she’s loading a slide show of the pictures I took on Saturday too!

The whole event took a lot of coordination and thank you to all who participated in any way. This was the first AutumnFest and we had no funding so it was a successful event and is still ongoing through the rest of the month. Please support your Chamber members!

Retail Committee members also include: Kathleen Frey, Pioneer Press; Sheila Duda, TeaLula; Lisa Ross & LuAnn McNaughten, Lisa’s Homemade Italian Ice; Dr. Craig Morse, Uptown Chiropractic Clinic; Perrie Hayes, Sudden Values; Mary McNulty, All on the Road Catering; Kim Uhlig, City of Park Ridge and several other merchants (if I missed you, please don’t be offended!)

Don’t forget – Saturday was just the kick off! The ‘Scavenger Hunt’ and ‘I Spy’ and ‘Vote for Your Favorite Window’ all go through Halloween so please keep your windows decorated that long! Please visit every store.

We had a nice turnout for our lunch last Thursday and received great info on preparing for the flu pandemic by Bill Pretzer, Park Ridge Fire Department.

Keep in mind these tips:
• Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
• Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way.
• Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
• Stay home if you are sick for 7 days after your symptoms begin or until you have been symptom free for 24 hours, whichever is longer. This is to keep from infecting others and spreading the virus further.
• Follow public health advice regarding school closures, avoiding crowds and other social distancing measures.

Noodles catered the spaghetti and meatballs lunch, All on the Road provided the garlic bread and Lisa’s Homemade Italian Ice gave us the dessert! Thank you to all 3 for donating the meal.

Another successful event for Chamber members that was at no additional charge!
Day after tomorrow: come out to network with other Chamber members and hear Todd Wessel speak about the new book he authored. He’s also the editor of the Journal Newspaper.

The luncheon is at Riggio Ristorante, 7530 Oakton Niles, 847-698-3346. Cost is $25 for Chamber members with rsvp; $30 at the door and for Prospective Chamber members. 11:30 to 1:30.

We’re asking for nominations for the Park Ridge Community Star Awards. Go to www.parkridgechamber.org on the 1st page under Announcements to download the letter and forms. The forms were in the Chamber October newsletter that you just received too.

Gail's Weekly Chamber UPDATE

It was a nice, quiet weekend – our daughter, Lian, was born in China and we celebrated the Autumn Moon Festival with several other families with little girls from China.

I heard on NPR that, as a result of New Year’s Eve festivities, the most popular birthday in the world is October 5 and today is my husband’s birthday!

By the way, if you have a working floor lamp you don’t want, I could use one for my office. And the Park Ridge Nonprofit Center needs tables!
FREE LUNCH!
Prepare for the Flu Pandemic and come have lunch on Thursday! Milton Friedman said ‘there’s no such thing as a free lunch’ but this Thursday, we’ll prove him wrong!

Noodles is catering the spaghetti and meatballs lunch, All on the Road is providing the garlic bread and Lisa’s Homemade Italian Ice is scooping up the dessert! Thank you to all 3 for donating the meal.

Although there is limited seating we still have lots of room. Please rsvp to the Chamber asap!

LIFESOURCE TO HOLD BLOOD DRIVE AT SOUTH PARK CHURCH Good deeds don’t have to cost a thing!
LifeSource, Chicagoland’s Blood Center, will be hosting a blood drive in the Park Ridge Community to help replenish the community blood supply. The drive will take place Monday, October 5, 2009, from 2 - 8 p.m. in the gym at South Park Church, 1330 S. Courtland, Park Ridge, IL.
Blood donations are a great way to give something back to the community without having to spend any money. Every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood. Blood donations make surgery possible, cancer treatments successful and trauma cases recoverable. One donation can save up to three lives.
All presenting donors will receive a free Mini-Wellness Check, which includes pulse, temperature, hemoglobin (iron), blood pressure and cholesterol screening. To schedule an appointment please call LifeSource at 877-543-3768 or sign up on-line www.lsbrighten.org, Code: RG40.
LifeSource, Chicagoland’s Blood Center, is a non-profit organization. As the largest blood center in Illinois, LifeSource distributes a half million blood products annually to approximately 60 area hospitals in meeting the need for patient transfusion therapy. Ninety percent of the population will need donated blood in its lifetime, yet fewer than three percent of eligible donors in the Chicagoland area regularly give the gift of life.

Members of the Chamber can call Susan Raap at 773-416-0536 or email her at susan.raap@gmail.com for more details or to arrange for dropping off items - or - to have them picked up.
What a worthy cause – thanks Sue who works at member Rosewood Restaurant! If you can knit, please knit a scarf to keep someone warm (like a hug!)
