Gail's Weekly Chamber UPDATE

Today is the day to get your 2009 dues paid (by 4 p.m.) to be included in the Community Guide. I’m sending them the current list of members at 4:30 p.m. Call the office at 847-825-3121 to make payment arrangements.

As I mentioned, last year there some who promised to pay so they were included in the Community Guide in good faith and then they never did renew. At the end of this email, look for your name and if its there, you’re in. If it’s not there, call me.

Don’t forget that the Community Guide reaches more than 14,000 households and businesses in Park Ridge. This annual guide is the community resource for local information. Area residents rely on it for local information including schools, clubs and organizations, government and City information and so much more.

As a chamber member, you get a free listing both alphabetically and categorically in the business and service directory.

Our basic membership with 1 to 5 employees is only $210 for the entire year! It includes dozens of networking events and opportunities – and we only refer our members to the various callers we get at the Chamber office on a daily basis.

Please call me now to renew your membership!

Gail's Weekly Chamber UPDATE

It’s Presidents Day!

It’s also my wedding anniversary! And it’s Dorothy Brownstein’s 9th anniversary with the Chamber – please call and wish her a happy anniversary tomorrow!

Our son, Dirk, came home from college for the weekend so there were lots of smiles at the Haller house!

And rehearsals for the play continue – 10 hours per week! ‘Run Forest Run!’ - it’s nothing about the Gump guy!

70 people came to the monthly networking luncheon last week at Carlucci’s Rosemont, 6111 North River Road, Rosemont. What a turnout!
Thank you to John Campagna and Mark Robbins for hosting us with such fabulous food! Our servers, Lorraine, Angel, and Richard were also wonderful!
Carol Dunitz, Ph.D. spoke on “Increasing Advertising Effectiveness” and entertained us with a couple songs!
We held a raffle for an insert in the monthly Chamber newsletter valued at $150 and the winner was Adam D. Paoli, Investment Adviser Representative with John Hancock Financial Network!
Carlucci’s gave us a $50 gift card for the raffle. Barb from All on the Road Catering earned a $10 Chamber gift certificate for referring Orthopaedic Surgery Specialists, Ltd. for membership but she donated it back so we raffled it off at the luncheon and another lucky member got it! (Next time, I’ll write down the names of the winners so I can mention them!)
The Chamber is lining up educational workshops this year!
The first for 2009 is on ‘Preparing Your 2008 Taxes – Finding Opportunities and Reducing Risk With Your Individual Return.’
It will be held this Wednesday, Feb. 18, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Park Ridge Public Library Meeting Room on the 1st floor. Seating is limited. RSVP to the Chamber.
Another workshop will be held at Comfort Inn in Des Plaines on March 25, topic is ‘managing in a downturn economy’. Stay tuned for more details.
Catherine Johns comes back April 29 for the complete presentation of what we got just half hour of in the Women in Business – “Seven Aspects of a Powerful Presence”.
The February Business After Hours will be held at Bethany Terrace, 8425 N. Waukegan Road, Morton Grove. If you have any coats you no longer wear, please bring them for the homeless.
5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Refreshments of course!
Please come and network and bring plenty of business cards. This event is included in your annual dues at no additional charge! RSVP to the Chamber so they know how many to expect.
Winterfest – we had our first meeting! If you would like to be involved in planning any of the activities for Winterfest, please let me know. We’ll be meeting each month on a regular basis. All ideas welcomed!

We’re working with Pioneer Press to publish the Chamber’s Community Guide. Members who have paid 2009 dues will be included in the guide.
See the end of this email for the list of who will appear in the guide. If you don’t see your name, then you probably have not renewed. Please get your payments in this week or you’ll miss out on being in the 2009 Community Guide.
If you joined in the past 12 months, you paid for one full year. Then Dorothy invoiced you a pro-rated amount that will take you to the end of this year and then you’ll be on the same calendar as everyone else.
Platinum members will be on the front cover! It’s only $300 more to upgrade to Platinum and it includes 8 lunches! It’s the best value in town!
I had lunch at Comfort Inn last week with Nichole Squires and Nick Trivedi and took a tour of the guest rooms, meeting rooms, and amenities. It’s totally renovated with new furniture, new beds and bedding, new flooring, everything. It sparkles! We’ve set up educational workshops in March and April there so you can see for yourself.
We’ve received many phone calls from residents about Bailey’s Restaurant. Baileys in Westmont (630) 655-0440 330 E Ogden Ave is honoring the outstanding gift certificates.

Home Enhancements is having a huge sale on draperies and window treatments – up to 30% discount! Frank said he’ll come to your home and give you a complimentary half hour consultation. Call today at 847-292-2212 before they book up!

Gail's Monday Chamber UPDATE - February 9, 2009

Although Puxatawny Pete’s shadow indicated 6 more weeks of winter, it sure has felt like spring this past week! Hope you got outside to enjoy it!

I was a judge last week for DECA, an ‘international association of high school and college students studying marketing, management and entrepreneurship in business, finance, hospitality and marketing sales and service.’ Both Maine South and Maine East High Schools participated. It was interesting and they’re always looking for judges so please think about judging.

Rehearsals for ‘Run Forest Run’ continue at Washington School. Tickets are $8.

Chocolate & Champagne

Networking

Another Hit!
The Chocolate & Champagne Multi-Chamber Networking event last Thursday at the Northbrook Hilton was a FABULOUS success! There were almost 60 booths sold and more than 200 attendees came through. It smelled like chocolate throughout the halls! The wine and champagne flowed – and speaking of flowing, there were 2 chocolate fountains! We had a great showing from our Chamber with 25 of our members participating!

Jason’s Deli
Jason’s Deli is open! They are located in the new development in Uptown Park Ridge. There is plenty of parking in the underground garage. The ribbon cutting with Mayor Frimark had a good turnout and the luncheon afterwards was delicious! They serve breakfast, lunch, dinner and will cater events too.

Monthly Networking Luncheon:

Feb. 11 @

Feb 18 Educational Workshop at the Library
Workshops! Look for more educational workshops this year!

The first for 2009 is on ‘Preparing Your 2008 Taxes – Finding Opportunities and Reducing Risk With Your Individual Return.’

It will be held Wednesday, Feb. 18, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Park Ridge Public Library Meeting Room on the 1st floor. Seating is limited. RSVP to the Chamber.

February Business After Hours: The Bethany Terrace
The February Business After Hours will be held at The Bethany Terrace, 8425 N. Waukegan Road, Morton Grove. They will also be accepting coats for the homeless.

Please plan to attend and network. This event is included in your annual dues at no additional charge! RSVP to the Chamber so they know how many to expect.

2009 Chamber Events
The Chamber is starting to plan events for the rest of the year – electronics recycling, golf outing, Winterfest, and more. Are you interested in being on any of the Committees? Did you want to get more involved in activities to get your business out there in front of people and get to know more people? Would you like to see more events or different events? Let me know. How about marching in the Memorial Day Parade as a Chamber?

Winterfest!
The Winterfest planning begins this Thursday, 2/12, at the Chamber at 2 p.m. If you’re interested in participating and helping to plan the festivities for the day after Thanksgiving, let me know. Everyone and all ideas are welcomed!

Want to be listed in the 2009 Community Guide?
We’re working with Pioneer Press to publish the Chamber’s Community Guide. Members who have paid 2009 dues by February 18, which is next week, will be included in the guide.

The Chamber annual dues did not go up and has not changed in several years.

Platinum members will be on the front cover! It’s only $300 more to upgrade to Platinum and it includes 8 lunches! It’s the best value in town!

Do you offer Chamber Member Discounts?
Chamber membership has its rewards. As a current member of the Park Ridge Chamber of Commerce, you can promote your business to other Chamber members through your participation in our Member to Member Discount Program. Here‘s the way it works. You list your business as a participating member at no cost to you, specifying what discount you are making available to other Chamber members and their employees as well as any restrictions. As an example, a restaurant may offer 10% off, or a free dessert with lunch or dinner, or a complimentary dessert with the purchase of two or more entrees; a bank may offer a free box of complimentary checks and a safe deposit box for new business and/or personal accounts; an accounting firm may offer a 10% discount for new clients, etc. We publish your offer to the entire Chamber membership and other business owners and their employees to use your products and services. You acquire new business, and they get a break when using your products or services.

We only need to know that you will participate and what your discount and restrictions, if any, will be.

Cell Phones for Soldiers
We shipped 93 more phones last week for Cell Phones for Soldiers – that makes 204 cell phones! Thank you to District 64 Green Teams that encouraged the students to participate! For every cell phone donated, a 60 minute phone card is sent to a soldier overseas so he/she can call home for an hour. That’s 204 soldiers and their families that benefitted! Check out www.cellphonesforsoldiers.com for more information. It sure feels good to do this for our military personnel and their families, doesn’t it!

Member News

I had lunch at Hay Caramba! last week with Josh Granum from the McTigue Financial Group, who recently joined and upgraded to Platinum status. Josh was impressed with Hay Caramba! and said he’ll definitely go back!

We’ve received many phone calls from residents about Bailey’s Restaurant which closed last week.

Other Members I visited last week: Brickton Mortgage (Diane Forsythe); A Sterling Design (Diddy Blyth); Janus Premiums (Cathy Janus); Oakton Ice Rink; Park Ridge Library; District 64 (Washington); Hay Caramba!; Jason’s Deli; No ‘e’ Disign (Suzann Wilson); Higher Level Wellness (Susan Frangos).

Beatles Night!

March 6 & 7
Park Ridge Community Church (PRCC) will be hosting its Sixth Annual Beatles Nights on March 6th & 7th at 7pm. Beatles Night has become a great tradition bringing together some of the best local musicians in the area to play Beatles tunes. This event has been a huge success, with mostly sold-out shows (about 250 people per night). It has also been successful because all proceeds support the PRCC Youth Ministry Fund, which supports various local outreach programs, youth events and youth mission trips.

We invite you to be a part of Beatles Nights by considering an advertising sponsorship for the event. Your business will be advertised in the program for this well attended event.

We also welcome contributions of Beatles related items or merchandise (CD’s, DVD’s, books, posters, games, music, etc.) which will be raffled off during the evening’s performances.

If you have questions, please contact Tricia Williams or Jane Meagher 847-696-4466.

Accents by Jenny!
Accents by Jenny, 1412 Canfield Avenue, reminds you to get your order in for Valentines Day and mention the Chamber discount of 10% when ordering. Call Jenny at 847-292-6617. Don’t forget that this Saturday is Valentines Day!!

Gail's Monday Chamber UPDATE February 2nd

You would have thought that the Chamber office staff would have had a slow week after the big installation dinner but not so! Last week was another busy week and I have so many people to thank!

By the way, rehearsals for the Washington School play continue – we rehearse 10 hours each week! Tickets are $8 and we’re running the show for 7 performances: Feb. 26, 27, 28 and March 1, 5, 6 & 7. It’s great family fun so let me know if you’d like tickets and I’ll get them for you.

Thank You

Anna Basile, Sun and Moon Yoga!

A big thank you to Anna Basile from Sun and Moon Yoga, 2026 Oakton, for hosting the Business After Hours at her beautiful studio. It was a wonderful crowd who braved the cold and came to network. Anna used All on the Road Catering for the appetizers and WineStyles for the wine and one of her Yoga students baked healthy cookies for us to try as she’s considering starting up an online cookie business.

Anna also had one of her instructors demonstrate various Yoga positions while Anna described what they were. She was VERY flexible!

Hosting a Business After Hours is a great way to showcase your business and facility and get 40 or so people in through your doors. The next available date is July 30 so let me know if you’re interested in hosting. There is no charge but the host does cover the costs of the two hour event. You can also go in with another business if you want.

Women in Business – another success!
Women in Business met at Rainbow Hospice last Friday and we had a record turnout of 60 women (and one lone, brave man)! Chicago Radio Personality, Catherine Johns, was the keynote speaker and she talked about ‘Creating A Positive Image’. Catherine discussed how women often speak, stand, talk, and then gave tips on being more powerful in our speech and body language – then everyone gave their 30 second commercial and received a personalized critique from her! It was very well received and now Catherine Johns and I are talking about having her give a 2 or 3 hour workshop! I’ll keep you posted, of course!

Panera Bread catered the WIB breakfast with bagels, pastries and a huge urn of coffee that never ran out! Park Ridge resident, Ginni Miniscalco, is the catering manager for 11 Panera Breads and submitted the application to join the Chamber this month! Welcome to the Chamber!

Thank you to Dave, Sandy, and Jackie for hosting our event at Rainbow Hospice! We pushed the numbers to the limit and beyond and they still accommodated us!

Welcome to Orthopaedic Surgery Specialists!
New member, Orthopaedic Surgery Specialists, Ltd. had their grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony last Wednesday. Barb from All on the Road catered the event and called me to let me know about the ribbon cutting. So I called over, they joined the Chamber, and Mayor Frimark cut the red ribbon with the Chamber’s 3 ft long ceremonial scissors – thank you to the Ambassadors and board members who made it! Barb will receive a Chamber gift certificate for $10 because she referred them to me as a new member! Thank you, Barb!

Chicago Requesting RFPs
Thank you to Belinda Rosenberger for this tidbit:

Issued by: City of Chicago (The Department of Aviation)
The City of Chicago ("City") Department of Aviation invites the submission of proposals by qualified persons and businesses to develop and operate concessions at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport ("Airport"). The City is issuing three Requests for Proposals ("RFP") as follows:
1. A Request for Proposals to develop and operate a manicure/pedicure salon services concession in one location in Terminal 3 of the Airport.
2. A Request for Proposals to develop and operate a gourmet tea concession in two locations in Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 of the Airport, to include the preparation and sale of tea drinks for consumption at the Airport as well as the retail sale of tea and related products.
3. A Request for Proposals to develop and operate a gourmet food concession in two locations in Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 of the Airport, to include the retail sale of pre-packaged or packaged to order gourmet food products.

The City has established an Airport Concession Disadvantaged Business Enterprise ("ACDBE") participation goal for these concessions, as well as other minimum qualifications including experience in developing and operating comparable retail businesses. The specific requirements of these solicitations are set forth in the RFP documents.

If you have a qualified background and are interested in these opportunities, you are invited to respond to one or more of these RFPs. Interested parties may obtain a copy of each RFP at the Airport's website, www.flychicago.com, which can be found at the "Concessions Opportunities" link under the "Doing Business" tab. If you would like a copy of an RFP mailed, or would like additional information, you may contact:
Unison Retail Management
(773) 894-3900
(773) 894-3910 (fax)

Proposals submitted in response to these RFPs will be accepted until 5:00 p.m. CST, February 19, 2009

E-Cycling Encouraged by the State
State Encourages e-cycling

Beginning Jan. 1, 2012, consumers will be prohibited from tossing many electronic items into the trash, thanks to a new Ewaste bill signed into law earlier this year. Illinois residents can recycle old, unwanted or malfunctioning electronics through a growing network of E-cycling businesses, permanent drop-off locations, or through a series of one-day collection events sponsored by the state and by regional or county solid waste agencies. DCEO maintains a list of organizations that offer E-waste reuse/recycling facilities at www.illinoisrecycles.com.

Even before recycling, any unwanted electronics that are still working should be considered for reuse whenever possible. Check with your local thrift store to see if they accept electronics donations. Also, many non-profits and private businesses throughout the state disassemble electronic equipment and use old components to assemble refurbished systems, separate reusable parts for resale and recycle unusable items for material content. In addition, several electronics manufacturers, such as Apple, Dell and Sony, sponsor their own E-cycling programs and may even accept other brands for a small fee. Retailers, such as Best Buy and Circuit City, as well as cell-phone providers, including AT&T and Verizon, also collect used electronics for recycling or refurbishment. Earth911.com gives a complete list of manufacturers and retailers who offer disposal and recycling programs.
