Weekly Chamber Update

Hope your holidays were fabulous! Remember that those who renew by year end receive a sponsor link on our welcome page for 1 month! Thank you to those who have
Looks like there's a wonderful chain reaction starting in Park Ridge....

It IS like a movie! Inspired by the generous gesture of Eric Nelson, Nelson Automotive, to match whatever the Park Ridge Community Fund can raise, up to $7,000, by Dec. 31, another wonderful neighbor has picked up the ball.

Ron Lundin of Lin-Mar Motors, Morton Grove has offered to match whatever we raise up to $3,500 by Dec. 31! So if you've been planning to give to the Park Ridge Community Fund, your impact is even greater now!

The need is great everywhere these days, but you can help so many good causes with just one gift to the Park Ridge Community Fund. For more than half a century, local business owners and residents like you have generously helped the Park Ridge Community Fund make life better, neighbor to neighbor.
The Park Ridge Community Fund is a locally-run 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and all donations are tax-deductible as allowed by law. Your one gift supports local charities and non-profit organizations that provide medical research, rehabilitation, health care education, safe emergency housing and care for women and their children; support for the sick and their families; services to help seniors stay engaged and healthy, and activities to provide wholesome outlets for kids and teens. And that’s just the beginning!
To learn more about the many services your gift makes possible and to donate safely online, please visit www.prcommunityfund.org. Eric Nelson and Ron Lundin are waiting to help make your gift of caring go twice as far this holiday season and beyond, so please donate before December 31.
After our recent Chamber board meeting, the following members were approved so please welcome them:

12/19/2011: Weekly Chamber Update

Will you do me a favor? Save your corks for me. I’m going to make something really cool with them!

Jonathan Black, our college intern, is back from Michigan State University for his winter break and working at the Chamber for Cindy and Marci. Dorothy will be here this week and I’ll be in and out using up some vacation days. The office will be closed this Friday.

Happy holidays!

Last night, for the 2nd year, Chamber sponsored and served the Sunday Supper at St Paul of the Cross. The Chamber contracted with All on the Road Catering to provide a fabulous meal for 110 guests of roasted pork loin with caramelized onions, herb whipped red skinned potatoes, a vegetable medley, sliced French Bread, and mixed greens salad. Sponge cake, milk and apple juice were brought by volunteers.

Thank you to Joe Bredemann for his generosity, the Kaminiskis and the Olsons too, which covered the cost of the meal. I love how the Chamber members always step up to the plate in providing for their own community.

Volunteers who served were: Theresa and Rich Olson with son Matt Berg; Frank & Maureen Kaminski; Mary, & Luke Tremont; Wes Davis; Dave and Judy Donovan; Sheri Roche; Gail Haller; Lori Annetti; Wanda Wilson; Lynn Harvey; Rand and Cheryl Schweizer; Dick and Karen Larsen; and Ulyana Lysak.
What a wonderful holiday luncheon we had last week at the Hyatt Regency O’Hare! The food was great and Oneri Fleita was a fabulous speaker – he had wonderful stories about recruiting players.

He brought an autographed Matt Garza baseball which we raffled off.

Oneri also brought these items which we agreed to use for the silent auction at our annual Installation dinner on January 21 at the Park Ridge Country Club:
• An autographed Ernie Banks baseball
• An autographed Billy Williams bat
• An autographed Starlin Castro Jersey #13
All have certificates of authenticity

I’m taking bids now!
Thank you to Nick Trivedi and Nichol Squires for hosting the last Chamber Business after Hours for 2011! What a spread they served too – and especially to Fran for doing all the fabulous baking! It was a wonderful event and they gave out ‘Park And Fly and stay overnight’ gift certificates!

Petite Opera Show Schedule for Amahl and the Night Visitors Petite Opera performs "Amahl and the Night Visitors" Dec 2-11 and asks "Would you Like Even MORE Entertainment with That?"

Petite Opera Productions, Park Ridge's own professional opera company right in your backyard, presents the delightful family holiday classic, “Amahl and the Night Visitors” by Gian Carlo Menotti. Written in 1951 for NBC, this delightful opera, in English, follows the story and imagination of Amahl, a young crippled shepherd boy, as he sees the largest star in the sky. Three kings, following the star to Bethlehem, ask to stay the night with Amahl and his Mother, a poor widow. The kings lay out the gifts they have brought for the Messiah. The Mother is tempted to steal the gifts to care for crippled Amahl, but is instead touched by the wonders of the Christ child as told by the kings. Likewise, Amahl is so moved that he offers his crutch as a gift to the child, and a miracle occurs.

Each performance of “Amahl and the Night Visitors” is preceded by a special guest artist:

• FRI Dec 9 at 7:30 PM with special guest Galina Dance Studio performing "The Christmas Tree" ballet
• SAT Dec 10 at 7:30 PM with special guest Willows Academy Madrigal Singers
• SUN Dec 11 at 7:30 PM with special guest Musicke's Merrie Companions (recorder quintet)

Can you be a judge for DECA? Can you be a judge for DECA?

DECA is a high school extracurricular organization that is focused on business, marketing and entrepreneurship. Most of the area high schools have DECA chapters. On Tuesday, December 6th – area schools are holding an area competition at the Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont to get their students ready for competition at the state level. The schools need business people to serve as judges – as a judge, your time commitment would be 8AM until no later than 1PM. A continental breakfast will be served. Parking is free to DECA judges at the convention center.

As a DECA judge you will go through a role play situation with students. The students have 10 minutes to read and prepare for a role play situation around business. They then present their recommendations or ideas to you (the judge) who then also asks them some provided questions. When a student is done, you score that student and rank them against the other students you see. There is no preparation work required – you will be provided with a copy of the role play and have a chance to discuss with one of the event advisors that morning.

In the past judges have told us they appreciate the opportunity to give back to the community and help students with a true interest in business.

FRI Dec 2 at 7:30 PM with special guest Lutheran Choir of Chicago

Winterfest 2011

Winterfest on Black Friday was unbelievable! I’d like to take the credit but most of the credit goes, once again, to Mother Nature for giving us a perfect evening that brought out the huge crowds. How were your sales?

It was a wonderful event that did take some planning so thank you to our planning partners, Mary Dalton from the library; Ed Graham from the City; the PR Fire Department who brought Santa in on the truck and held their open house in South Park; Maine South High School Marching Band and Joel Matter their teacher; all the merchants who stayed open; the Boy Scouts Troop 3 who did the luminaries with Ed Graham; South Park Merchants who had the reindeer; the Willows Academy Chamber Choir; BMO Harris Bank; and the Holiday Lights Coalition who made the season bright with the holiday lights. Also, thank you to Jackie Mathews, president of the Chamber, for being a trooper and running all over town with us!

The Park Ridge Garden Club selected Jenny and Rick Kulik’s home at 405 S. Prospect as the Best Decorated House for Winterfest 2011! The City made the yard sign. I had the honor of informing them and taking their pictures – they were excited and delighted.

Carol A. Teschky – Congratulations again! Carol A. Teschky named Supervisor of the Year

Maine Township Supervisor Carol A. Teschky was named Supervisor of the Year by the Illinois Township Association of Senior Centers Services Committee (ITASCSC) at the annual conference of Township Officials of Illinois on Nov. 8 in Springfield. Known widely in the community as a staunch advocate for seniors, Teschky received the award because of her outstanding commitment to meeting the needs of seniors within Maine Township.

First elected to her position as a Maine Township trustee in 1989, Teschky was appointed Supervisor when Bob Dudycz retired from the position in 2007. Since her re-election as Supervisor in 2009, she has supported and developed the transportation service that subsidizes the cost of transportation to both seniors and the disabled. Supervisor Teschky has also seen to it that the necessary assistance, such as Medicare D, Circuit Breaker, Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), Veterans Services and other pertinent programs reach the seniors who need them the most. Additionally, she has advocated for the Township to support existing community senior programs and centers so that duplication of services is minimized. Her own active participation in programs, as well as her encouragement of other elected officials to get involved, were also critical factors in choosing her for the honor.

Established to address the need to enhance senior services for the growing number of seniors in Illinois communities, ITASCSC was officially recognized by the Township Officials of Illinois in 1982.
