Gail's Weekly Chamber UPDATE

Happy Halloween!

Please take a moment to review your listing on the chamber website. Here’s the member directory:
http://secure.parkridgechamber.org/home/websitepages/MemberDirectory.aspx

Click on the 1st letter of your business name and then on your business so you can see what your listing looks like.

Email your 100-word description if you haven’t done so yet – exactly how you want it listed so we can copy and paste. Also, review your member contacts to ensure they are current. Employees come and go and we often don’t know until emails bounce back.

Here’s an example of CorePower Yoga’s Chamber listing and description:

Thank you’s to:

Wendy at Houlihan’s for hosting the Chamber’s Business After Hours last Thursday – thank you! It was wonderful and well attended! I’m estimating about 60 members attended throughout the 2 hour evening!

Kymberlee Raya, Big Shot Marketing, for her dynamic presentation on email marketing at the Women in Business Breakfast. 42 people attended. Thank you to those who brought raffle prizes too! The funds raised go towards the Holiday Lights.

Panera Bread for catering the wonderful breakfast!

And to Public Works for allowing us to move our meeting there! The room is perfect for presentations and we appreciated the availability and Terry’s ‘can-do’ attitude in getting us situated.

If you are a U.S. military veteran, please email me and let me know.

We will list your name in the newsletter. And, if you come to the November 9 luncheon at the Marriott O’Hare, we’ll take a picture of all our vets for the newsletter and I’ll post it online.

Dr. Pam Boyce I was recently approached by a new friend of mine, a 6th grader, Sarah from Emerson Middle School. Sarah thought that it might be nice to help others. She would like us to collect your used glasses that you can no longer use or no longer need. Sarah is not doing this for a school project or a girl scout project or even a church project. She just thinks it would be nice to help others. I think she has a terrific idea!

Did you know that more than 670 million people around the world are blind or vision impaired simply because they can’t access an eye exam and glasses from an eye doctor. This appalling statistic can have a huge impact on the lives of children who can’t see to learn, adults who can’t work, and older people who can’t look after themselves.

There is a box Sarah made to collect your old glasses and "recycle" them for others at Boyce Family Eye Care. We will give these glasses to the students I work with at the Illinois College of Optometry, who are in the SVOSH (Student Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity) club. They will in turn clean, sort, and go on mission trips to distribute these glasses. These missions to underdeveloped communities around the world provide life-changing care for thousands of people in need and allow students to participate in restoring or improving vision while also exposing them to different cultures and diverse eye conditions. Hope you'll consider helping!

Bellas & Wachowski The Four Most Common Ways to Get Sued by an Employee

The four most common kinds of claims by employees are for wrongful discharge, claims for unpaid leave and overtime, defamation, and discrimination and sexual harassment. Many such claims can be avoided by a detailed employee policy manual and being careful in how you deal with employees.

To reduce the chances of getting sued, it also helps to have well-drafted policies and procedures in place. Every employer, for example, should consider having an employee handbook that outlines what is expected of employees in the workplace.

A Note From Gail

I talked with Carol Langan who is in charge of the Maine Township Food Pantry at 1700 Ballard Rd (847.297.2510) and she told me they desperately need soup, pasta and cereal as they are totally out.
From their website, here is their wish list of items they need:
http://www.mainetownship.com/services/ga/foodpantry.shtml
(Please do not donate large food service size cans)

Macaroni & Cheese
Cereal
Juice, Juice Boxes, Kool Aid
Canned Tuna, Chicken, Salmon
Plain Rice, Rice-A-Roni
Canned Fruit, Apple Sauce
Crackers
Instant Potatoes
Peanut Butter, Jelly (18 oz. maximum size)
Bisquick, Pancake Mix, Syrup
Prepared Meals - Canned Pasta Meals, Boxed Meals
Desserts - Cake, Cookie, & Brownie Mixes, Jell-O, Pudding, Cookies, Frosting
Condiments - Ketchup, Mayonaise, Mustard, Pickles
Beverages - Coffee, Tea, Hot Cocoa
Cooking Supplies - Flour, Sugar, Oil, Salt, Pepper
Cleaning Products - Laundry Soap, Dish Soap
Paper Products - Paper Towels, Toilet Paper, Tissues

The Chamber is one drop off point for food. The Human Needs Task Force is placing bins out in the community and will periodically pick up. The Food Pantry will also pick up larger loads.

Carol explained that not only is the need greater but those who have donated so generously in the past find themselves in need also.

Please help.

Weekly Chamber Update

From Gail,

Don’t forget to like us! www.facebook.com/parkridgechamber

Last night was the Million Dollar Quartet at the Apollo Theatre! It was fantastic!

I’ve been asked to book ‘Jersey Boys’ – if I did, would you go? What other shows are you interested? When we did Billy Elliot last year, we had over 100 people but we really only need as little as 15 or 20 in order to qualify for the group rates.

This week is our luncheon at Outback Steakhouse on Wednesday, our Tech Forum about Twitter on Thursday, and on Saturday is the Electronics Recycling Day.

Holiday Lights Can you donate money for the lights so they can be strung up in Park Ridge? It will be very sad if there are no festive holiday lights in the trees.

We’re estimating the cost at about $5,000 for the cost of the lights so if just 200 Chamber members each donated $25, we’d easily have it!
Just in from Mayor Schmidt:
I learned late last Friday that I will be one of three local mayors speaking at a press conference being held by the Northwest Municipal Conference at the State of Illinois Building on the issue of Com Ed's performance this summer. Please be advised that the specific topic will focus on health and safety issues caused by Com Ed's lack of response. Inconvenience and economic loss, while very important, will not be addressed at the press conference.

The press conference is tomorrow morning. I am trying to gather as much information as possible about how the outages endangered the health and safety of our residents, such as live wires or a power loss to a medical device If any of you experienced a health or safety issue, or know someone who did, I would greatly appreciate it if you would provide me with details before the end of this evening. I want to be able to share those stories with the press and other elected officials who will be in attendance tomorrow.

Thanks for your help.
Passport to Park Ridge last Friday First Friday of October was 'Passport to Park Ridge' and included an Amazing Race with 23 merchants participating. Clever clues, some hard and some easy, were passed out to 51 teams in front of the library. The clues scattered race participants througout Park Ridge's shopping areas from Uptown to South Park to Village Green. Five groups came back to the Library at the end to report they visited all 23 businesses. Raffle tickets were handed out as racers figured out the clues. All raffle tickets will be entered into a drawing to announce the winner of a huge gift basket filled with more than $200 in prizes from all the merchants and the Chamber of Commerce.

The first team to come in with their passport stamped from all 23 merchants was John Valin and his mother, Barbara, who said, "This was the most fun we've had in Park Ridge in a very long time!" Lisa Maskala Streff said, "Nice work with the "Amazing Race". We had a good time and went into some businesses that we didn't even know about."

After the race ended at 8 p.m., a campfire-style sing-along in front of the library was led by Jerrod Skiba from Allegro Music Center with chocolate covered marshmallows provided by Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory.

www.firstfridayspr.com

AutumnFest, sponsored by the Park Ridge Chamber's Retail Committee and the Library, kicked off with a Pet Parade with Mayor Dave Schmidt leading the parade with his 15 year old Maltese, Miabella. About 40 families and their pets, kids and stuffed animals came out to enjoy the warm Indian Summer day and march in the parade around the library grounds. Dogs dressed up as a lobster, headless horseman, devil and more also proudly sported their costumes. The mood was festive and Mayor Dave reminded the crowd to shop locally and keep their money in Park Ridge.

After the Pet Parade, families brought their old clothes to stuff with hay for scarecrows. Smaller children enjoyed the musical haybales.

Protect Your Business from Risks of Lawsuits – tip #2
Submitted by Bellas & Wachowski

Fact: We live in a litigious society and most lawsuits arise out of a business relationship, not from the threat of a personal injury lawsuit. Every business faces the risks of becoming involved in a lawsuit. Business owners can help minimize the risks by taking some protective measures.

Always Get it in Writing

Whether you are providing services, hiring a vendor, hiring an employee, or selling product, get it in writing.
The most likely kind of claim against your business will be over a contract of some sort. Every transaction - buying, selling renting, or providing services involve written contracts - involves legal relationships. If you enter into business dealings without a written contract, you are placing your business at risk. You can minimize the risks in your favor by using contracts that contain terms that favor you. The protections are contained in the fine print. Every agreement should spell out how disputes between the parties to the contract will be settled. For example, arbitration and mediation clauses keep you out of the courts and liquidated damages spell out the amount to be paid by a breaching party. You can also add provisions limiting your warranties and spelling out penalties for late payment.

Check this book out from the library:
Invisible Gorilla and Other Ways our Intuitions Deceive Us by Christopher Chabris and Daniel Simons 157.74 CHA This book addresses illusions of perception, thought and memory. We often have an impression that we are seeing everything around us in detail and more importantly, that everyone else is seeing the same thing. What your colleague or employee hears or sees or remembers may be different and lead to misunderstandings and errors. The complimentary website to their book has some great video examples of their research: www.theinvisiblegorilla.com/videos.html

On Friday, September 23, 2011 along with hundreds of other CPAs throughout the state, Rozovics & Wojcicki, P.C. participated in the Illinois CPA Society’s Second Annual CPA Day of Service. The CPA Day of Service was started last year in response to the growing needs of social service agencies and non-profit organizations in an uncertain economy and increased member interest in public service opportunities.
As part of this effort, 13 employees from Rozovics & Wojcicki, P.C. spent the day helping the Kalo Foundation fix up the future site of the Iannelli Studio Heritage Center in Park Ridge. In one afternoon these employees performed various tasks such as clearing overgrown weeds and shrubbery, washing windows, as well as vacuuming and cleaning the property’s interior surfaces. Because the property had been vacant for a number of years, the volunteer work Rozovics & Wojcicki, P.C. performed initiated the first step in renovating the property. “Stepping out of the office and taking time away from our usual tasks, gave us all a very real connection to the needs of our area. Volunteering is also a morale booster – employees feel good doing something good together,” stated Jeff Rozovics, Partner.
Rozovics & Wojcicki, P.C. has been serving clients in the Park Ridge and Chicagoland Area for more than 30 years. More information about the firm can be found on their site at www.rozwoj.com.

Check out our Facebook page: www.facebook.com/parkridgechamber and like us! Big Shot Marketing came over and helped me set it up so I’ve been putting pictures on it. See if you can find your picture! We also have a twitter account which I try to update daily.

First Fridays is this Friday – Passport to Park Ridge. Are you participating? We’re printing the booklet so if you haven’t sent us your clue, we need it today please!

Fairview has a huge crane in front of Panino’s but they are still open for business! Please come out!

Start thinking about who you want to nominate for a Park Ridge Community Star for 2011. Our annual dinner will be on Saturday, January 21, at the Park Ridge Country Club.

Also, we’re looking for new board members interested in serving on the Chamber’s board of directors. A nominating committee has been appointed by the president of the board, Jackie Mathews, and consists of Jackie Mathews, Theresa Olson, Dave Donovan, Jay Crowley and me. Let one of us know if you’re interested in serving on the board. It’s a hard working board and very rewarding!

What a wonderful event! The Chamber’s monthly Business After Hours last Thursday held at Rosewood Restaurant in Rosemont was fabulous! We had about 45 people and the Rosewood was so generous – they had food stations set up plus waiters passing appetizers plus an open bar for 2 hours! Nadya Zimmerman, Tanya Travel, won the $50 gift certificate that Rosewood donated to the Chamber!

New group for retailers! Happened last Wednesday and continues each month on the last Wednesday. 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at the Park Ridge Nonprofit Center, 720 Garden Street. Sheila Duda, TeaLula, chair of the Retail Committee will facilitate this new group. Next one is Wednesday, October 26.

The first topic was ‘Facebook for Business’ and Mark Maloney, Findzall, and Ben Wilson, Falkor Group, answered all the questions!

Don’t forget our Membership Drive for the Chamber!

Bring in a new member during October, and receive a $25 Chamber gift certificate! The new member needs to list you under ‘referred by’ on the application.

New members approved between now and the end of the year will be in good standing through the end of next year, 12/31/2012.

City Seeks Task Force Volunteers by Today!

The City would like to invite interested individuals to serve on two newly created task forces.

Members will include a blend of people from the business community, non-profit, and consumer perspectives. The purpose of the task force is to gain feedback in the areas of marketing, business retention, and business attraction. A letter of interest, including applicable qualifications, should be submitted to the Deputy City Manager, 505 Butler Place, by October 3. Initially, the task force will meet on a monthly basis.

The Sign Review Task Force will be comprised of 8 to 10 individuals from the community, both business and property owners. These individuals will be asked to review the sign ordinance and recommend appropriate changes.
