Dear Cindy,

WIB: We have a scheduling conflict for the Nonprofit Center tomorrow so we’re scrambling for another site for our Women in business breakfast! We have tentative places but they all need to get back to me. I’ll let you know the change. We have almost 40 rsvps – it will NOT be cancelled!

See you tonight at Houlihan’s from 5 to 7 for the Business After Hours!

Are you a Veteran? Let me know if you’re a military veteran because we want to honor you!

If you attend the November 9 luncheon, we’ll take a picture of all the veterans and publish it! So far I’ve heard from Dave Donovan, Perry Fisher, Curt Edlund. I bet there are a lot more vets out there!

Food Drive The Chamber is a drop off point for food for the Maine Township Food Pantry.

Dr. Pam Boyce I was recently approached by a new friend of mine, a 6th grader, Sarah from Emerson Middle School. Sarah thought that it might be nice to help others. She would like us to collect your used glasses that you can no longer use or no longer need. Sarah is not doing this for a school project or a girl scout project or even a church project. She just thinks it would be nice to help others. I think she has a terrific idea!

Did you know that more than 670 million people around the world are blind or vision impaired simply because they can’t access an eye exam and glasses from an eye doctor. This appalling statistic can have a huge impact on the lives of children who can’t see to learn, adults who can’t work, and older people who can’t look after themselves.

There is a box Sarah made to collect your old glasses and "recycle" them for others at Boyce Family Eye Care. We will give these glasses to the students I work with at the Illinois College of Optometry, who are in the SVOSH (Student Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity) club. They will in turn clean, sort, and go on mission trips to distribute these glasses. These missions to underdeveloped communities around the world provide life-changing care for thousands of people in need and allow students to participate in restoring or improving vision while also exposing them to different cultures and diverse eye conditions. Hope you'll consider helping!

Bellas & Wachowski The Four Most Common Ways to Get Sued by an Employee

The four most common kinds of claims by employees are for wrongful discharge, claims for unpaid leave and overtime, defamation, and discrimination and sexual harassment. Many such claims can be avoided by a detailed employee policy manual and being careful in how you deal with employees.

To reduce the chances of getting sued, it also helps to have well-drafted policies and procedures in place. Every employer, for example, should consider having an employee handbook that outlines what is expected of employees in the workplace.
