A Note From Gail:

Keep sending me your news! I love hearing what’s going on in your business – and so does everyone else!

For the 4th year in a row, I’ll be a judge in the local high school competition for DECA held in Rosemont on the morning of Tuesday, December 6th. Can you judge too? They always need more judges. Eric Nelson, Nelson Automotive, also judges each year as he won state in high school and competed nationally and feels a duty to give back. They need judges in all career fields. Let me know soon please.

Bellas & Wachowski Protect Your Business from Risks of Lawsuits
Submitted by Bellas & Wachowski

Fact: We live in a litigious society and most lawsuits arise out of a business relationship, not from the threat of a personal injury lawsuit. Every business faces the risks of becoming involved in a lawsuit. Business owners can help minimize the risks by taking some protective measures.

Shield Yourself from Personal Liability Exposure

Some lawyers advise that every business should be incorporated or formed as some other type of limited liability business entity. While incorporating is no guarantee against personal liability exposure, it's certainly an effective shield against the risks and dangers inherent in operating a business. Every business owner should be mindful of the risks and take steps to protect their family and their personal assets.

It will be held at Rosewood Restaurant in Rosemont from 5 to 7 p.m. Bring your business cards and be prepared to meet a lot of people! Please let us know if you can make it so we can give them a heads up on how much food to prepare!
Retail Roundtable – New!

‘Facebook for Businesses’ is the topic with Mark Maloney, Findzall, and Ben Wilson, Falkor Group, speaking! New group for retailers! Meets on the last Wednesday of each month starting September 28 from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at the Park Ridge Nonprofit Center, 720 Garden Street. Sheila Duda, TeaLula, chair of the Retail Committee will facilitate this new group. The first topic to be discussed will be ‘Facebook for Business’ so bring all your questions and get them answered! Mark Maloney, Findzall, and Ben Wilson, Falkor Group, will answer your questions!

If you have a shop/store in Park Ridge then don’t miss out on the Chamber’s Retail Roundtable! It’s a new group formed to allow retailers the opportunity to discuss issues of interest specifically to them.

Email info@ParkRidgeChamber.org to rsvp. There is no fee for the Retail Roundtable.

Bring your neighboring retailers too – we hope to get new members for the Chamber. Prospective members can attend 3 meetings and then we ask that they join the Chamber.

New members approved between now and the end of the year will be in good standing through the end of next year, 12/31/2012.

Leads & Referral Networking Groups Park Ridge Executive Network – PREN:

Who isn’t interested in networking? Isn’t that a primary reason you joined the Chamber? The Chamber offers 3 monthly leads and referral networking groups and they’re each looking to increase their memberships.

There is no additional charge because it’s included in your membership – one person per profession. Email me and I’ll let you know which one needs your profession!

Ambassadors We’re looking for Ambassadors for the Chamber – members who want to meet our new members and mentor them
so they feel comfortable at Chamber events.

You get a badge! You meet and greet at Chamber events. You’ll teach them about all the benefits the Chamber offers.

If you’d like to be a Chamber Ambassador, let me know or Susan Frangos at susan@higherlevelwellness.com who chairs the group.

Planning for Winterfest! Winterfest will be held on Friday, November 25, from 6 to 9 p.m.

Can you donate $50, $75 or $100 to help cover the costs?

Will you be open and, if so, what activities will be going on at your place of business? Do you have any ideas to drive people into your business? We’re working with the library, the City and the South Park Merchants to make this another successful event.

12 Toys of Christmas by Kidwinks.com
Kidwinks.com Sponsorship Opportunities:
12 Toys of Christmas - For the last 2 years, we have run a very successful "12 Toys of Christmas" promotion, highlighting 12 great toys hand-picked by a few of our favorite toy store owners and kidwinks.com. Throughout the promotion, members vote on their favorite toys, and every couple of days someone wins one of those toys. Last year we were scheduled to appear on TV highlighting the 12 Toys of Christmas but our segment was canceled due to the death on Ron Santo, so my guess is that this will be an easy one to get on TV this year. Not only do parents love The 12 Toys of Christmas promotion but so do grandparents, aunts, and uncles, in fact anyone who has a child in their life. We are looking for businesses to sponsor 1 or all 12 of the toys. Sponsorship includes branding in the listing, in the email blast, and on our facebook page. The cost is $300 per toy or all 12 for $3,300. If all 12 toys are sponsored by 1 business we will also include their branding in our TV segment if it is picked up by a local news station.
Holiday TV Line Up - Last year we posted "The Holiday TV Lineup" every day from December 1st to December 27th on our facebook page, FreeThingsToDoInChicagoWithKids, and our fans loved it!! Cost to sponsor this popular posting: $100 per post.
Please contact Nina for more information or to reserve your spot. nina@kidwinks.com, 847-915-6666.

Gail's Weekly Chamber UPDATE

Please come to the Chamber’s monthly networking luncheon on Wednesday, 9/21, from 11:30 to 1:30. We have 50 people signed up so far and I’m hoping for twice that! It will benefit the Park Ridge Community Fund and we have wonderful donations for the drawings and silent auction. Mike Pressler and David Barker will speak about the health center for District 207. The Country Club has a wonderful menu planned. It will be another fun event so don’t wait to rsvp - $30 with rsvp or $35 at the door.

The Mega-Connect scheduled for this Thursday was cancelled due to lack of rsvp’s. We usually get 250 attendees with 18 Chambers participating but it was very slow this time so we had to release the hotel space and the speaker.

Yes, this is a busy week! Board meeting tomorrow, Luncheon on Wednesday, Retail Committee on Thursday, Ambassador lunch on Thursday and Women in Business on Friday!

Andrea Herron will talk on hiring the right person the first time. Le Peep will cater breakfast. Cost is $10/$15.

Also on Friday, Chico’s is having a huge sale and donating 10% of the proceeds to the Park Ridge Community Fund and to MCYAF! So, you’ll see me there.

If you bring in a new member during October, you will receive a $25 Chamber gift certificate! The new member needs to list you under ‘referred by’ on the application.

New members approved between now and the end of the year will be in good standing through the end of next year, 12/31/2012.

Please note that the Business After Hours at Rosewood Restaurant will be on September 29! It will be a fabulous event! Please rsvp to the Chamber so we have an idea of how many to plan for!
If you’re interested in a monthly leads and referral networking group, let me know and we’ll try to fit you into one of the three the Chamber has – and there is no additional charge because it’s included in your membership!
Our Chamber Ambassadors visit prospective and new members and mentor the new members so they feel comfortable at Chamber events and also learn about all the benefits the Chamber offers. If you’d like to be a Chamber Ambassador, let me know or Susan Frangos at susan@higherlevelwellness.com who chairs the group. The next meeting is Thursday.

The next First Fridays is October 7 with the theme “Passport to Park Ridge”. Come help plan! Thursday at 8:30 a.m. at TeaLula – we could use some extra hands!

There are about a dozen chambers participating in the Multi Chamber Expo & Taste on Tuesday, October 18. Each Chamber is allocated 7 slots for exhibitors. Right now I have 6 spots open but there are other Chamber that have waiting lists so they’re eyeing our spots. If you want to exhibit, let me know asap.

Restaurants pay $50 to exhibit. Everyone else pays $200 til Sept 20 and $250 after that.

The Expo is free to attend with a business card and we usually get hundreds coming through.

Sponsored by Park Ridge Financial Advisors and the Park Ridge Chamber of Commerce featuring a Big Ten Show Down between The Northwestern Wildcats and The Penn State Nittany Lions 2011 ANNUAL HOMECOMING GAME on Saturday, OCTOBER 22nd Time: 6:00pm at Northwestern's Ryan Field - Cost is $40 per ticket.

City Seeks Task Force Volunteers

The City would like to invite interested individuals to serve on two newly created task forces.

The Economic Development Task Force will be comprised of approximately 15 volunteers from a cross-section of the community. Members will include a blend of people from the business community, non-profit, and consumer perspectives. The purpose of the task force is to gain feedback in the areas of marketing, business retention, and business attraction. A letter of interest, including applicable qualifications, should be submitted to the Deputy City Manager, 505 Butler Place, by October 3. Initially, the task force will meet on a monthly basis.

The Sign Review Task Force will be comprised of 8 to 10 individuals from the community, both business and property owners. These individuals will be asked to review the sign ordinance and recommend appropriate changes. Letters of interest should be submitted to the Community Preservation and Development Manager, 505 Butler Place, by October 3. The Sign Task Force is expected to meet as needed to complete its review.

Presented by: Victoria Cook, The Guilt-Free Coach

Description:
R U A "NETWORKING NEWBIE"?
You are a "networking newbie" if you are:
=> NEW to networking, and want to figure out how to use networking to build your business, connect with potential strategic partners, and expand your contacts base.
=> NEW in town, and want to make connections with other local business owners in a safe, low-key environment.

The Community Remembers 9-11
Hopefest 2011 The Community Remembers 911

Hopefest 2011, organized by three local Methodist churches, will take place on Sunday, September 11 at Maine East High School located at Dempster and Potter Road. The community will unite with a day of remembrance and hope affirming volunteer action across our community and be a day of observance on the tenth anniversary of the WTC/Pentagon attacks.

Hopefest 2011 will commence with a memorial service at 7:30 a.m. which will include the unveiling of a steel I-beam preserved from the World Trade Center. At noon, the Park Ridge Fire Department will be sounding the siren of one fire truck at Hopefest and area churches will be sounding their bells. Myriad of activities will continue throughout the day and conclude with a ceremony at 3:00 p.m.

The day will celebrate the dedication of our local first responders, and will include the Advocate Lutheran General Kids Fair, a Salvation Army emergency response seminar, Resurrection Health Care CPR classes, LifeSource blood drive, food drive, free health screenings, and volunteer work projects at several community locations. For more information, visit the website www.hopefest.net.

Flags fly at half-mast on 9-11, Patriot Day In the United States, the President can issue an executive order for the flag of the United States to be flown at half-mast upon the death of principal figures of the United States government, and others, as a mark of respect to their memory. When such an order is issued, all government buildings, offices, public schools and military bases are to fly their flags at half-mast. Under federal law (4 U.S.C. § 7(f)), the flags of states, cities, localities, and pennants of societies, shall never be placed above the flag of the United States; thus, all other flags also fly at half-mast when the U.S. flag has been ordered to fly at half-mast. The only exception to this is the POW/MIA flags are never flown at half-mast. They are completely removed.

Federal law requires the flag be flown at half-mast on September 11 (Patriot Day).

Want your picture on the PR Library website? Mike Hominick, one of the terrific Librarians here at the Library is coordinating a marketing campaign for our Park Ridge Reads initiative that is taking place in October and is interested in featuring local business owners.

From Mike:

“My name is Mike and I am a librarian at the Park Ridge Public Library. In October, we will once again be presenting the “Park Ridge Reads” program. This is a program similar to “One Book One Chicago,” in that everyone in town is asked to read the same book, and the goal is to bring the community together. This year’s selection is Scott Turow’s World War II novel, Ordinary Heroes. The library will host several discussions and provide a wide range of World War II related programs (In addition, Scott Turow will also be appearing at the Pickwick Theater on October 18th).

I would like to ask if you are interested in participating by taking a photo of yourself, and/or your staff, while reading the book. Throughout the month, we’ll post these photos on our Facebook page and website. It will be a fun way to show the community coming together to read the book, while it will also be an opportunity to show our patrons the local businesses.

If you are interested, please reply and we can set up a time for me to stop by with the books and a camera.”

September 6, 2011, Weekly Chamber Update

From Gail,

Our golf outing is next Monday! We have room for 20 more golfers.

Did you know you can sponsor a golf cart for just $75? Your company name would be on a sign on the cart. And we need all goody bag items by tomorrow as we’re stuffing them on Wednesday! The Retail Committee of the Park Ridge Chamber of Commerce presented First Fridays Cruisin’ Park Ridge last Friday!

It was a great event to bring out the community. We’d like your feedback – come to the Retail Committee meeting at TeaLula this Thursday at 8 a.m.

Our thanks to Marko Ratic, Express Auto, who coordinated the cars! Also to Ron Elmgren, Park Ridge Frame Gallery, who assisted. And of course to Sheila Duda, TeaLula, who chairs the Retail Committee and also puts in countless hours moving it forward.

We can’t do it alone. Thank you to all of the Retail Committee – but we could still use more helping hands.

This from Sheila:
“The next FF planning meeting has been changed to Thursday, September 8 at 8:00 am at TeaLula.

Items for discussion include:
• First Fridays: Cruisin' debriefing
• First Fridays follow-up survey to participants
• Fall into Park Ridge October 7
- Ideas for Autumn in-store events to share with participants
- Community raffle
- Window scavenger hunt
- AutumnFest activities on Saturday
- Marketing/advertising schedule for October
- Facebook/Twitter/Website Update schedule

Many, many thanks to Marko and his team for coordinating a great event. There’s a really nice comment posted FirstFridaysPR.com that speaks to its success.

Hope you can attend on Thursday.”

Gail's Weekly Chamber UPDATE
