Gail's Weekly Member News

We’re envious of those who never lost power! The PR Nonprofit Center lost power Tuesday at 9pm while there were still people meeting here but everyone made it out safely. Power was back on yesterday morning at the office (but no internet or phone until today), and last night at the Haller house we got power and internet - so we’re back to normal now but still catching up. Hopefully, you fared well too.

It was time to clean out the fridge anyway!

June 6, 2011 Weekly Update

First Fridays Park Ridge looked like it was a great success! We visited as many participating merchants as we could in the 3 hours and managed to take a few pictures. Check out the story I posted on triblocal.com with the pictures I took:

http://triblocal.com/park-ridge/community/galleries/2011/06/first-fridays-park-ridge/

So many people made it happen but special shout out to Sheila Duda, TeaLula, for chairing the Retail Committee and steering this big boat; to Mark Maloney, Findzall, for the website updates and all the social media attention and to Bill Markowski for creating the logo and artwork and flags. Thank you to the entire Retail Committee – and to the over 30 merchants who participated. We have more flags and would like to see even more who participated in the July 1 First Friday which will be focused on music this time so if you know of any musician who would like to participate, have them get in touch with us. (My 11 year old daughter, Lian, is good for 30 minutes of violin!)

Debriefing on June 21 at 7 p.m. here at 720 Garden.
As you know, my executive assistant position is held by 2 Park Ridge moms, Cindy Clark and Marci Derrick, who job share. They’ve each taken the entire summer off to spend with their families which allows me to offer their position each year to a college student who is home for the summer. So, this year we’re fortunate to have Jonathan Black who’s from Park Ridge and is a Junior at Michigan State University studying Marketing and Advertising as our summer intern. Please welcome Jonathan who started today and will be full time until he goes back to school! So, I predict you’ll see great things happen with our social media campaign!

The chamber’s monthly networking luncheon is this Wednesday at Rosewood Restaurant, 9421 W. Higgins, Rosemont from 11:30 to 1:30
Last year we had Neil Dishman speak on the top 5 mistakes that employers make. Neil told me that his talk is really the top TEN mistakes but he only had time to cover the top 5 so now he’ll cover the other 5 mistakes. He was very interesting and his talk was very well received so I hope everyone who came last year will come again and bring a friend!
Neil H. Dishman is an Associate in the Chicago office of Jackson Lewis LLP and is our featured speaker and will talk about “Employment Law 101 for the Small-Business Owner”
Employers large and small are subject to a complex web of federal, state, and local employment laws. Small businesses bear a particularly heavy burden in complying with these laws, as they often face the same legal risks as larger employers but may lack the resources and personnel to navigate their legal obligations to their employees.
In this presentation, Neil H. Dishman and Sarah J. Gasperini, attorneys who exclusively help employers prevent and resolve disputes with their employees, will arm you with the tools necessary to minimize your risk of costly employee litigation.
Cost is $25 for Chamber members with rsvp; $30 for Prospective Chamber members and walk-ins.
Thursday – Tech Forum, 720 Garden, 8:45 – 10:15 a.m. Moderated by Ben Wilson, Falkor Group (and Ambassador!)

Chamber Weekly Member News Update

Because of the many queries about my family emergency I mentioned in Monday’s eblast, I thought I’d bring you up to date (for those of you who don’t like to read about the Hallers, skip this part!) – my 23 year old son, Dirk, was bit by a dog and the bite got severely infected so he was admitted to Lutheran General Hospital for 2 days while they pumped mega-doses of antibiotics through him. Thank you to all the well-wishers – he’s back at work at Houlihan’s and doing fine now.
There are 30 or so businesses participating in First Fridays which kicks off tomorrow!
Thank you to board member, Sheila Duda, TeaLula, who has tirelessly championed this effort with the Chamber’s Retail committee.
Please check out www.FirstFridaysPR.com for all the participating businesses, the art and artists, the Kalo Trolley Tours (donations gratefully accepted), and way more.
Thank you to Resurrection Health Services for being a major sponsor of First Fridays!

As you may know, I’m also the part time executive director for the Park Ridge Community Fund (PRCF).

Chamber member Gleeday.com has generously offered to hold a fundraiser for the PRCF July 11 - 18! We’re looking for restaurants, stores, and other businesses to sign up. It’s great exposure for you, Gleeday and for the PRCF!

Gleeday is an online advertiser offering deals to their member base located throughout the suburbs. Importantly, and unlike their competition, they focus solely on underserved and relatively small geographic markets. Their model is structured to bring local, repeat, and profitable customers to their business partners. Take a look at their website: www.gleeday.com

Gleeday has generously agreed to contribute 30% of gross sales to PRCF as part of a special week of deals they are planning to run in mid-July. PRCF will also co-promote these deals by sending them to contacts throughout Chicagoland.

Please take part in this great initiative and help your community!

For further details, please contact Charlie Moriarty, at charlie@gleeday.com or at 847.868.2437. Charlie may also contact you to give you more details about this fundraiser.

TIP FROM THE TEACHER at TriPilates
ATHLETIC GRACE
by Yoly Nowak

New students often ask, "How long does it take before the exercises look graceful and flowing when performed?"

Joe Pilates wrote, "Correctly executed and mastered to the point of sub-conscious reaction, these exercises will reflect grace and balance in your routine activities."

We practice the same set of exercises in the same order so that the movements will become second nature to us. We don't think about it; we finish Footwork on the Reformer and automatically reach to lower the foot bar and go into the Hundred. Part of learning the sequence of exercises is learning the transitions between the exercises.

As you mount or dismount an apparatus, or move from one exercise to the next, use the least amount of extraneous movement to get into position without wiggling, squirming or adjusting to "get in the right spot." Think instead of adjusting a bit if you need to as you start to move. The transitions from one exercise to the next will allow you to master the exercises so that you can focus your mind on scooping your stomach a little deeper or lengthen your spine a bit longer, which will give you that athletic grace that we're looking for while we're moving.

Yoly and Beth are available for private lessons and small groups.

Structural Integrated Therapy:
How can this help you?
One of the numerous therapies that Vive! offers is a therapy called Structural Integrated Therapy (SIT). SIT is a deep tissue therapy whose primary goal is to balance and to lift the body in its gravity field. It strives to balance the extensors and flexors in the body thereby providing improved structural alignment and posture. Our bodies are not perfect and slight imperfections can cause us great pains as we try to stay balanced. For example, if a person has one leg shorter than the other the body will fight gravity in order to stay upright. This adjustment can cause the person's spine to bend to the other side in order to compensate for the unevenness. The muscles and fascia (the outer layer of connective tissue surrounding the muscles) are then pulled and stressed from this structural shift. SIT applies specific muscle stretching techniques that help the muscles to move freely and independently of each other. The goal of SIT is to enable all the body parts to cooperate in an integrated fashion. SIT accomplishes this over 10 individual sessions where each session focuses on a different body section. If you are suffering from postural misalignments, talk to us about getting a SIT sample

May 31, 2011 Weekly Update

From Gail,

We could not have had a more perfect day for the Memorial Day Parade yesterday! Thank you to all our members who participated:

• Joe Bredemann who provided us with a very cool Camaro convertible!
• Jackie Mathews, President of the Chamber, and Theresa Olson, President Elect of the Chamber, who sat up on the back seat of the very cool Camaro convertible with me, waving to the cheering crowds and gently tossing out candy while Rick Pucci, board member, drove the VERY cool Camaro convertible!!
• Lynnette’ School of Dance who’s students danced the whole way
• StageCoach Theatre Academy (my daughter, Lian, got to carry one end of the banner!)
• WineStyles’ Tracy and Doug Bell
• Park Ridge Newcomers
• Linda Russo, hairstylist
• SportClips’ Larry and Natalie and truck and friends!

We went to Cream of the Crepe for brunch after the parade – it was packed! If you haven’t been there, you must try a crepe – they have sweet and savory ones! They’re also catering our Women in Business breakfast this month.

First Fridays First Fridays start this Friday, June 3! Please come out in a show of support for shopping Park Ridge and for everyone who has worked so hard to make this happen!

Thank you to Jeanine Schultz Memorial School
Thank you to the Jeanine Schultz Memorial School for hosting the Chamber’s May Business After Hours! It was a lovely affair with about 30 Chamber members in attendance and I’ve received feedback from a few members who connected and made good contacts, leads and referrals.
Chamber Outing? Are you interested in seeing ‘Million Dollar Quartet’?
I was thinking of a Chamber outing fundraiser that wasn’t a sporting event (sorry, Rick!) so here’s the deal – would you like to go see it at the Apollo theatre, 2540 N. Lincoln Ave, Chicago for $50 pp (regularly $75.50 pp). Sundays at 6:30 p.m.
Just need 15 people to be a group. I was thinking Oct. 9 because there is no school the next day.
MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET is the new smash-hit musical inspired by the famed recording session that brought together rock 'n' roll icons Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins for the first and only time.
On December 4, 1956, these four young musicians gathered at Sun Records in Memphis for what would be one of the greatest jam sessions ever. MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET brings that legendary night to life, featuring a score of rock hits including "Blue Suede Shoes," "Fever," "That's All Right," "Sixteen Tons," "Great Balls of Fire," "Walk the Line," "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On," "Who Do You Love?," "Matchbox," "Folsom Prison Blues," "Hound Dog" and more.
This thrilling musical brings you inside the recording studio with four major talents who came together as a red-hot rock 'n' roll band for one unforgettable night. Don't miss your chance to be a fly on the wall of fame... at MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET! http://www.milliondollarquartetlive.com/about.html
