June 6, 2011 Weekly Update

First Fridays Park Ridge looked like it was a great success! We visited as many participating merchants as we could in the 3 hours and managed to take a few pictures. Check out the story I posted on triblocal.com with the pictures I took:

So many people made it happen but special shout out to Sheila Duda, TeaLula, for chairing the Retail Committee and steering this big boat; to Mark Maloney, Findzall, for the website updates and all the social media attention and to Bill Markowski for creating the logo and artwork and flags. Thank you to the entire Retail Committee – and to the over 30 merchants who participated. We have more flags and would like to see even more who participated in the July 1 First Friday which will be focused on music this time so if you know of any musician who would like to participate, have them get in touch with us. (My 11 year old daughter, Lian, is good for 30 minutes of violin!)

Debriefing on June 21 at 7 p.m. here at 720 Garden.
As you know, my executive assistant position is held by 2 Park Ridge moms, Cindy Clark and Marci Derrick, who job share. They’ve each taken the entire summer off to spend with their families which allows me to offer their position each year to a college student who is home for the summer. So, this year we’re fortunate to have Jonathan Black who’s from Park Ridge and is a Junior at Michigan State University studying Marketing and Advertising as our summer intern. Please welcome Jonathan who started today and will be full time until he goes back to school! So, I predict you’ll see great things happen with our social media campaign!

The chamber’s monthly networking luncheon is this Wednesday at Rosewood Restaurant, 9421 W. Higgins, Rosemont from 11:30 to 1:30
Last year we had Neil Dishman speak on the top 5 mistakes that employers make. Neil told me that his talk is really the top TEN mistakes but he only had time to cover the top 5 so now he’ll cover the other 5 mistakes. He was very interesting and his talk was very well received so I hope everyone who came last year will come again and bring a friend!
Neil H. Dishman is an Associate in the Chicago office of Jackson Lewis LLP and is our featured speaker and will talk about “Employment Law 101 for the Small-Business Owner”
Employers large and small are subject to a complex web of federal, state, and local employment laws. Small businesses bear a particularly heavy burden in complying with these laws, as they often face the same legal risks as larger employers but may lack the resources and personnel to navigate their legal obligations to their employees.
In this presentation, Neil H. Dishman and Sarah J. Gasperini, attorneys who exclusively help employers prevent and resolve disputes with their employees, will arm you with the tools necessary to minimize your risk of costly employee litigation.
Cost is $25 for Chamber members with rsvp; $30 for Prospective Chamber members and walk-ins.
Thursday – Tech Forum, 720 Garden, 8:45 – 10:15 a.m. Moderated by Ben Wilson, Falkor Group (and Ambassador!)

MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET is the new smash-hit musical inspired by the famed recording session that brought together rock 'n' roll icons Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins for the first and only time.
On December 4, 1956, these four young musicians gathered at Sun Records in Memphis for what would be one of the greatest jam sessions ever. MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET brings that legendary night to life, featuring a score of rock hits including "Blue Suede Shoes," "Fever," "That's All Right," "Sixteen Tons," "Great Balls of Fire," "Walk the Line," "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On," "Who Do You Love?," "Matchbox," "Folsom Prison Blues," "Hound Dog" and more.
This thrilling musical brings you inside the recording studio with four major talents who came together as a red-hot rock 'n' roll band for one unforgettable night.
