You’ll be receiving your invitation soon for the annual dinner at the Park Ridge Country Club when the 2011 Chamber Board of Directors is installed and all the Park Ridge Community Stars are honored. So, mark your calendars for Saturday, January 22. Silent auction items are being accepted now! It will be a glamorous and fun event so please plan to attend. We’d love to sell every table!
The Chamber board meets tomorrow and will approve of the last new members for the year, closing the year with 438 members total! Another record high! Thank you for being a member and thank you for renewing.

Please get your nomination in for the Park Ridge Community Star awards. They will be selected by our very elite group of Chamber past presidents. Deadline is today please.

A big thank you to Rich Callahan from Outback Steakhouse who hosted our luncheon last week. We had a total of 68! The meal was fabulous and everyone was festive and merry!

Thank you for all the raffle prizes that were donated. We played Chamber networking Bingo and had a blast! We also got a new member, Bridget Jones, Junior Achievement, who joined on the spot when her name was pulled for the cover of the Chamber newsletter Spotlight and was told that only Chamber members could win the Spotlight!

The Chamber’s last Business After Hours for the whole year was last Thursday at Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, 31 S. Northwest Hwy.

Thank you to Linda Hills for hosting us – Houlihan’s for the appetizers. Sheila Duda, TeaLula, and Lisa Ross and LuAnne McNaughton from Lisa’s Italian Ice were also there with goodies. It was a fun and festive affair for the many who braved the cold to come out and network – and eat lots of chocolate!

Gail's Weekly Chamber UPDATE

Yesterday was the benefit for the Park Ridge Community Fund, “It’s a Wonderful Life!” at the Pickwick Theatre, sponsored by Liberty Bank. It was crowded! I hoped the weather wouldn’t deter people and it didn’t! We cleared over $2,000 for PRCF!
Afterwards, several of us went to Noodles for a noodle-tasting that I won! Whenever you go to Noodles, drop your business card in the fishbowl for a chance to win a noodle-tasting for 8 – and if you win, make sure you go very hungry! It was fabulous!

Regus hosted the Tech Forum last week and Joshua Nichols, Unbound Technology, spoke about ‘zero inbox’ which was very interesting!

The Tech Forum meets on the 2nd Thursday of the month, usually here at 720 Garden.
Our holiday luncheon is this Wednesday, 12/15, at Outback Steakhouse. Here’s who has rsvp’d so far, so email me if you don’t see your name – need to know if you want grilled steak, chicken or salmon and how you’ll pay. 11:30 to 1:30

Bring a prize for our raffle if you’d like! It’d be gratefully appreciated. The funds raised will go towards a new digital camera for the Chamber!

The Chamber’s last Business After Hours for the whole year will be this Thursday at Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, 31 S. Northwest Hwy. 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. It’s the final event of 2010 and you don’t want to miss out! Come out and warm up with chocolates of all kinds, snacks and beverages. TeaLula and Lisa’s Italian Ice will be there!
Would you like a permanent name badge to wear to PRCC events? Chamber board, Ambassadors and staff have permanent name badges and I’ve received requests from numerous members (who covet ours!) for name badges so we’ll sell them for $10 which also gets you 3 raffle tickets at a luncheon (plus the name badge). The badge will have the Chamber logo, your first and last name, and the name of your business.

2011 Platinum members will get one name badge included in their Platinum upgrade.

The deadline is Monday, Dec. 20 at 4:00 p.m. – that’s 1 week from today!

Year-End Financial Planning Suggestion courtesy of Morningstar
The end of the year brings with it many activities—holiday shopping, gatherings with family and friends, and planning for the year ahead. Part of that planning should involve the not-insignificant matter of getting one’s financial house in order.
From evaluating a portfolio, to choosing a 529 college savings plan, to understanding mutual funds, the Park Ridge Public Library can help.
For instance, Morningstar Investment Research Center, an online database in our collection designed specifically for individual investors, includes research on more than 35,000 stocks, mutual funds, and exchange-traded funds. The database also allows you to build and test a portfolio and take interactive workshops and classes to sharpen your investing skills.
The Library provides 24-hour remote access to Morningstar Investment Research Center with your library card. Go to www.parkridgelibrary.org and click on Premium Resources to gain access to the most current stock and fund information from home or office.
What Corporate Customers are Reading
In the Monday, November 08, 2010 issue of the Chicago Tribune, an article listed the most recent top-selling business books. Here are titles that the Park Ridge Public Library has in their collection:
• The Happiness Advantage: The Seven Principles of Positive Psychology That Fuel Success and Performance at Work by Shawn Achor
• Empowered: Unleash Your Employees, Energize Your Customers and Transform Your Business by Josh Bernoff and Ted Schadler
• The Mirror Test: Is Your Business Really Breathing? by Jeffrey Hayzlett
• The 2020 Workplace: How Innovative Companies Attract Develop and Keep Tomorrow’s Employees Today by Jeanne Meister and Karie Willyerd
• Strengths Finder 2.0 by Tom Rath

Make a donation to the Library this Holiday season
The Holiday season is upon us, and the pressure to find the perfect gift might be looming over you. Why not make a donation to the Park Ridge Public Library in the name of your manager, co-worker, or loved one? Using this donation form, you can specify the amount of the donation and what area (book for an adult, book for a child, music or movies) you would like the donation to be used for. If you wish to celebrate a special occasion in a long lasting way, purchase an engraved brick for the Library’s Reading Garden. Gail's Weekly Chamber UPDATE

I hibernated this weekend as it was a great weekend to stay indoors! How about you?
This Sunday is the benefit for the Park Ridge Community Fund: “It’s a Wonderful Life!” will be shown at the Pickwick Theatre at 4 p.m. (sponsored by Liberty Bank). Doors open at 3 p.m. and live entertainment also begins. We’ll be raffling off the Apple iPad and a lovely jewelry set designed and created by award-winning Suzann Wilson, Beadphoria, that is stunning with Swarovski pearls and crystals with a gorgeous cameo sterling clasp (which I have here at the Chamber if you’d like to see it!) There are more prizes so come out on Sunday to see them and support a great cause and start or continue a family tradition!

Who would you like to nominate for a Community Star award?

The deadline is Monday, Dec. 20 at 4:00 p.m. – that’s 2 weeks from today!

Here is the link:
http://secure.parkridgechamber.org/home/Lists/Announcements/DispForm.aspx?ID=158

Please renew your Chamber membership!

Dorothy has been sending out invoices for 2011 which are due December 31. Please note that we haven’t raised dues since I’ve been here – and even longer (maybe 5 years Dorothy says).

We have 435 members today!

Last year we ended the year with 423 members. When I started as the ED in April 2008, we had 322 members. People come and people go – but in 2008, we added 74 new members; in 2009, we added 88 new members; and so far in 2010, we’ve added 70 new members.

I’m grateful for your support – thank you.

Can you donate something towards our December 26 St Paul of the Cross Sunday Night Supper?

All on the Road Catering graciously and generously will provide the meal for just $5 per person and we’ll provide the drinks, desserts and volunteers. Barbara has a heart of gold! Here is who has volunteered to help out:
Tasty Pup Pam and Luis
Resident Sue Raap
Resurrection Health Care Theresa Olson and family
PR Police Chief Frank Kaminski & wife
Kidwinks Jean Lemke
Central Baptist Village Valerie Niskanen & husband
Presbyterian Homes Mary Tremont & family
Comfort Inn O'Hare Nichole Squires

Whatever you can afford would be appreciated! I figure the total costs to be about $600.

Thank you to Chief Frank Kaminski and his wife, Maureen, for their personal pledge of monetary support and to Theresa Olson, Resurrection Health Services, for sponsorship.

Remember that volunteers must be at least 13 and we only need about a dozen.

Do you often feel buried under piles of email? Do you find yourself living in Outlook all day, constantly checking email again with every "ding"?

This Thursday at the Chamber Tech Forum, you can learn how to reclaim your email, your attention, and your life. Joshua Nichols of Unbound Technology will be discussing "Inbox Zero," and sharing some strategies for dealing with high volumes of email. If you have messages sitting in your Inbox that you've long-since forgotten about, you need to be there to hear these tips!

8:45 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. Please rsvp for this event because the Nonprofit Center has been rented out and we may have to move our meeting based upon how many will be here.

Member News is Thursday’s eblast but because this event is tonight, I thought I’d stick it in. Our very own Susan Scatchell from A-Abiding Care is advertising a Bingo night this evening downtown to benefit Alzheimer’s Association.

Email her at sscatchell@sbcglobal.net or call her at 847-404-8167 for more information.

Liberty Bank is sponsoring the movie at the Pickwick to benefit the Park Ridge Community Fund on Sunday, Dec. 12. Live entertainment begins at 3 (organ player, sing along, Willow Academy Chamber Choir) and the movie starts at 4 p.m. Free to all but a donation to the PR Community Fund would be gratefully appreciated.

Please remember to do your holiday shopping here in Park Ridge and/or with Chamber members. Our stores make our community unique and we need to support them as they often support the community.

And think of all the services you use in your home and business – not just stores where you buy products – but also insurance, taxes, financial planning, carpet cleaning, HVAC, etc. If you want people to give you their business, then you should give them yours.
Did you know…? Did you know…?

• That the Chamber is accepting Community Star Nominations?
• That Amphora decorated the Great Room of the Park Ridge Nonprofit Center for Winterfest and the holidays? Come and see – its beautiful! And everything’s for sale!

• that Global Handmade Hope is open on Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m?

• That, by allowing employees to eat lunch at their desk, you could cost your business thousands in overtime wages and penalties? Employees who are performing work while eating (the infamous working lunch) must have that time counted towards hours needed to reach overtime. For more information please see “10 Common Overtime Violations” (submitted by Bellas & Wachowski, Attorneys at Law)

• That Carlucci Rosemont is having a New Year’s Eve Party? 847.518.0990 for details

• That WineStyles is celebrating 3 years in Park Ridge?!

• That Kidwinks.com was featured in an article on the front page of the Chicago Sun-times last Thursday. 15 holiday savings tips parents will love Kidwinks (kidwinks.com) lists free museum days, family events and other fun, money-savings activities

Give the gift of life! PARK RIDGE COMMUNITY BLOOD DRIVE
Give the gift of life this holiday season

Glenview, IL (Nov. 12, 2010) LifeSource, Chicagoland’s Blood Center, and the Park Ridge Community Blood Drive Committee invite the community to save lives this holiday season at the Park Ridge Community Blood Drive 8:00 a.m. – 2 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 5, 2010, at Mary Seat of Wisdom, 1352 S. Cumberland Avenue in the gym.

Since its inception in 1986, the Park Ridge Community Blood Program has saved more than 8,200 lives. “We have a long and proud history of giving back to our community by donating blood,” said Chairperson George Johnson. “At this time of giving, I ask everyone to think about those in need.”

Every two seconds someone needs blood. Blood is needed daily for surgeries and medical procedures … cancer treatments and emergencies. Your donation makes a big difference because every time you donate blood you can save the lives of up to three people.

It’s easy to donate. The donation process takes about an hour and it’s perfectly safe and comfortable. Donors have to be at least 17 years old, 16 with parental consent, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in general good health. Most medications are accepted. Please bring photo identification such as a driver’s license, state ID or passport.

To schedule an appointment, call 1-877-LIFESOURCE (1-877.543.3768) or visit www.lifesource.org. Walk-ins are welcome.

Library Year-End Financial Planning Suggestion courtesy of Morningstar

Find the form here or call Ed Tidd at 847-720-3207 for more information.

Gail's Weekly Chamber UPDATE

Hope you had a wonderful and filling Thanksgiving! We sure did at our niece’s house – there must have been 35 people and everyone brought a dish so there were tons of delectable dishes and desserts! We all had to waddle out of there!
Did you come out for Winterfest on Friday? The weather was cold but clear and the double decker buses all were crowded. Let me know how your business did for Winterfest!
Deborah Oberschelp, Affordable Interiors by Deborah (312-909-1255), is decorating my home this week so if you want her to decorate your home or office for the holidays, call her now as she’s booking up! She uses your decorations but changes them in ways that make you think they’re new!

www.ParkRidgeWinterfest.com

The winner of the “Best Decorated House” for Winterfest 2010 went to Tom and Kathy Schmit at 520 S. Prospect. Thank you to the Park Ridge Garden Club for judging the contest for Winterfest!

We are accepting nominations for the Community Star awards. Think about who you’d like to nominate for this prestigious award – someone who
 Giver – goes beyond normal duties with extra effort in community building
 Citizenship Role Model – is someone whom others (particularly young people) look up to and can model himself or herself after
 Visionary – makes positive change(s) by introducing initiatives and community-wide programs

Please shop locally!

Buy Chamber gift certificates as teacher, coach, co-worker, scout leader gifts and they can now spend them at any store in Park Ridge that accepts them. We used to waive the service fee for Chamber members and the board recently voted to waive all service fees indefinitely for all merchants – so spread the word!
I’m looking for sponsors for our December 26 St Paul of the Cross Sunday Night Supper. This is the first time the Chamber is sponsoring a Sunday night supper and I’d love to do it annually.

All on the Road Catering graciously and generously will provide the meal for just $5 per person and we’ll provide the drinks, desserts and volunteers.

Whatever you can afford would be appreciated! I figure the total costs to be about $600.

Also, keep in mind that 720 Garden is a food drop off center for Maine Township Food Pantry.
There are 2 available advertising spots in our monthly newsletter, Chamber Connection, ad sheet for business card size ads, normally $25 per month but if you pay for a full year, only $250 for 12 months (you get 2 months free!)

The Park Ridge Community Fund is selling raffle tickets: $10 each or 3 for $25.

• Grand prize is a 16 GB Apple iPad with WiFi! (donated by a generous benefactor!)
• 2nd prize is a necklace and earring set designed and created by award-winning Suzann Wilson, Beadphoria
• More prizes include a Bardot Spiral Bracelet by Stella & Dot ($50 value); a $50 Chamber gift certificate

Would you like to donate a gift card or something from your business? It benefits the Park Ridge Community Fund. If you’d like to buy raffle tickets, send your check payable to “Park Ridge Community Fund” and we’ll enter you.

The drawing will be held on Sunday, December 12, at the showing of “It’s a Wonderful Life” at the Pickwick, sponsored by Liberty Bank for Savings.

Ok, it’s a little self-serving, but…

Jim Schmitt, Ringside Heating & Air Conditioning said, “A doctor in Boston called the Chamber for work on his rental properties in Park Ridge. The Chamber referred him to Ringside and he called me. It has turned into on-going business for me! Thank you to the Chamber!”

So it you have a testimonial about the Chamber or about another Chamber member, send it to me! We may pick your’s to be in the newsletter!
All meetings are held at 720 Garden unless specifically mentioned:

December 1, Wednesday, 9:00am-10:30am Health Care Forum Terri Schmidt, City and Maine Township Health Commission, as speaker.

Gao;

Can you believe how mild our fall has been? Makes me wonder if winter will also be as mild or will it hit us with a vengeance?
Another busy weekend! Lian had her final performance at StageCoach on Saturday for the season and will start up again in January.
Also on Saturday, my friend, Lori Annetti and her daughter Kendall, Lian, and I went up and down Prospect and Courtland delivering flyers to all the houses informing him of the 2nd Annual “Best Decorated House” Contest we’re sponsoring in time for Winterfest then dinner at Hay Caramba!
The Park Ridge Garden Club is judging the houses along the bus route and the winner gets $100 Chamber Gift Certificate, a yard sign proclaiming “Winterfest 2010 Best Decorated House” and bragging rights for 12 months! Woo hoo!

The new member orientation that was scheduled for tomorrow morning with the Ambassadors and board members has been rescheduled to Tuesday, Feb. 23 at 9 a.m.

Did you know that I can send out a dedicated eblast for you to all 600 member contacts for just $50?

When you get an email with a member’s flyer in it, that’s a dedicated eblast they paid the Chamber $50 for.

The Chamber will also sell mailing labels for $50 for one-time use – we call it the hottest list in town!
www.ParkRidgeWinterfest.com

Check out the website for Winterfest. Thank you to Dominic Cimilluca for hosting the website for us!

If you tell us what you’re doing for Winterfest, we’ll add it to the website! The weather will be 32 degrees and only 10% chance of precipitation so the crowds should out!

Don’t forget that you can put a table outside your store for sidewalk sales as long as it doesn’t impede the flow of traffic and is up against your wall.

If you’re serving alcohol, the City says you must get a T3 permit (temporary alcohol license) for $25.

Thank you to our cash sponsors. We’re still looking for donations if you can afford anything:

Thank you to Liberty Bank for Savings for hosting the Business After Hours last week! About 40 people attended and 5 of them were prospective members I’d not met yet so hopefully they’ll join! We raised $175 for the Park Ridge Community Fund so thank you to those who came and participated.

Rick Pucci, Park Ridge Financial Advisors, and Jorge Garduno, Tech Stuff, presented the talk “I Hate to Budget!” and “Tips to Make your PC Last Longer”. The prime rib was fabulous! The $10 donation per person went to the PR Community Fund.

The Grand Re-Opening and Ribbon Cutting for the Subway in Village Green had a good turnout with tons of food! Go check them out – everything is totally renovated and brand new!

The Women in Business holiday luncheon on Friday at the Hyatt Rosemont was the last WIB event for the year. We’ll start up again in January after the Installation & Community Star Dinner. Thank you to Deborah Oberschelp, Affordable Interiors by Deborah, for a fabulous display of decorating ideas that anyone can do and for teaching us how to make the rosettes. When Deborah decorated my home for the last two years for Christmas, she used old Christmas items in new and different ways that always made me wonder – ‘are these really my things?’ She can do the same for you too!

Just a reminder from Accents by Jenny, flowers and gifts, Thanksgiving is only a few days away! We will have extended holiday hours from 9am-3pm Thanksgiving Day for walk in business with many pre-made centerpieces, cornucopia arrangements, mum plants, fresh bouquets, and fall silk arrangements ready to go!

Member Update

Personally, from Gail
4 reminders for today and tomorrow:

This evening is our Business After Hours at Liberty Bank for Savings. Afterwards is the dinner at the Elks Lodge with Rick Pucci’s talk on ‘I Hate to Budget’ and Jorge Garduno’s tips on making your pc last longer.

Tomorrow at 9 a.m. is the Grand Opening Ribbon Cutting for Subway in Village Green – they’re making lots of food so everyone is invited! The mayor will be there and lots of other Chamber members so please come out to welcome the new owners and see all their renovations. It’s so clean and bright inside with new everything – looks like a little bistro.

And don’t forget our Women in Business Holiday Luncheon is also tomorrow at the Hyatt Rosemont – we have 18 signed up right now. Please rsvp today – bring a can or box of food for the food pantry. It will be a wonderful event with wonderful ladies – Deborah Oberschelp and Debra Delaney will be giving us entertaining and decorating tips for the holidays!

Contest your Real Estate Tax Bill I got this letter from Chamber member George Bellas:

“Cook County recently mailed the 2009-second installment tax bills. These bills will be due and payable on December 13, 2010.

You may recall the 2009 1st installment tax bill was payable on March 1, 2010 and was an estimated bill (55% of last year's bill). The balance due for 2009 is reflected on the 2nd installment bill recently mailed.

If your 2009 bill is higher than 2008, it may be the result of:

• a record 13.4% increase in the Cook County equalizer;
• an increase in your local tax rate;
• an increase in the assessment of your property (Chicago was re-assessed for the 2009 tax year).
• The computation of your 2009 taxes will appear on the right-hand side of your 2ndinstallment tax bill.

The Cook County Board reduced assessment percentages of commercial property from 38% of market value to 25% beginning with the 2009 tax year. Despite this change in the law, the Assessor did not reduce 2009 assessments of commercial property to reflect this change. As a result, record numbers of tax appeals were filed in 2010 requesting that a 25% level of assessment be applied to the value of commercial property.

We were able to secure substantial assessment reductions for many of our commercial clients by filing appeals and requesting that the County apply a 25% assessment ratio. If we obtained such a reduction for you, your 2009 bill is lower than it otherwise would have been. Your 2009 bill may or may not be lower than 2008 because the Cook County equalizer increased by 13.4%, which is unprecedented.

If we filed a 2009 appeal to PTAB or the Circuit Court and if we succeed in that appeal, a tax
refund will issue for the amount you overpaid for 2009 together with interest.“

Bill Hominick, Security Director, Park Ridge Youth Campus Gives Tips on Security while Shopping Now you finished your shopping.

To continue staying safe, ask yourself these questions:

• Do you get your keys out before you approach your parked vehicle?
• Do you look into all areas of your car before entering? Walk away and call for help if you suspect an unsafe situation. Intuition should be followed here!
• Do you place packages in the trunk of your car or out-of-sight from potential thieves?
• When arriving home, do you check your surroundings again before exiting your vehicle? If unsure, stay in your car and use your cell to call for help.
• Do you check the identification of all persons delivering packages to your home before you open the door?

A lot of this is just common sense but during the excitement of the holidays, we sometimes forget. To assist, just remember SAFE…Secure, Avoid, Flee, Engage.

Have a safe holiday season!
