Chamber Update April 23, 2012 Member Events Community Guide & Chamber Directory Publishes on May 31 Only paid members will appear so if you haven't yet paid your 2012 dues, please do so! It goes to every home in Park Ridge. We printing 17,000 copies! The Electronics Recycling was this past Saturday at Public Works. We partnered with the City and the Park District to get the word out and host this event. We have always processed 100 cars per hour which is why we do it for 3 hours because 300 cars worth of electronics is all we want to handle. Everything has to be removed from the cars (thank you One Brick and SWAP!) and then put into gaylords and onto pallets then Mike McGrath uses the forklift to load the pallets into the big trucks. We were amazed that we had 400 cars come through in 3 hours! There was never a break, never any downtime. The line never ended until we had to turn them away at noon. It was amazing and we have so many people to thank. D'Agostinos provided an assortment of delicious pizzas for the 50 workers! Thank you also to Maine Township Board; Maine Township Clerk Gary K. Warner; Maine Township Highway Commissioner Robert Provenzano; Park Ridge Taxi; and Village Bank & Trust for sponsoring this event! And a huge THANK YOU to Mike McGrath who is truly a Park Ridge Community Star. He stayed for another 5 hours after everyone else was gone, loading the trucks with all the electronics that we got in just 3 hours! On another subject, would you be interested in the Chamber forming a Legal Forum? Members could attend and ask questions of lawyers? If you're a lawyer, would you be interested in answering the questions? Email me. Here's what's happening at the Chamber: April 25, Wednesday, 9:00am - 10:30am Health Care Forum(Clute Studio). Did you know the Chamber has a HealthCare Forum? If you are interested, send me an email and I'll add you to the distribution list. It meets on the 4th Wed of each month and the program is set for the 1st Thursday each month at the Park Ridge Senior Center at 11:00 a.m. Next month's presentation on May 3rd will feature Dr. Sara Koveleski Kraut DPT and her father Dr. Jules Koveleski. They will discuss signs of a stroke, what really happened to Senator Kirk and stroke rehab. Loretta Downs has been a companion to the dying for more than 25 years. She has sat at the bedside of family members, friends, AIDS victims, nursing home residents and hospice patients. She credits these profound experiences with teaching her how to live—and how to prepare for dying. Join us to honor National Healthcare Decisions Day and hear Loretta’s inspiring and uplifting approach to preparing for death, one choice at a time.

For more than 25 years Loretta has been a companion to AIDS victims, friends, family, hospice patients, and nursing home residents through the end
of their lives. These teachers motivated her to retire from a successful career in the Merchandise Mart to become an inspirational speaker and
writer on the subject of supporting positive experiences at the end of life. She earned a Masters Degree in Gerontology at age 60.

Loretta founded Chrysalis End-of-Life Inspirations to advocate for nursing homes and hospitals to provide private rooms for keeping vigil with the
dying. She is President of the Chicago End-of-Life Care Coalition, a Metta Institute Certified End-of-Life Care Practitioner and a Respecting
Choices Advance Care Planning Facilitator. She is a member of the Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center ethics committee, the Association
for Death Education and Counseling, the American Society on Aging, the Society for the Arts in Health Care, and the Pioneer Network.

Blood Drive April 1 at St Paul of the Cross
The Holy Family Guild of St. Paul of the Cross Church, in partnership with the American Red Cross, is sponsoring its Annual Blood Drive on Sunday, April 1, 2012. The hours are 8AM – 1:30PM in the Morello Parish Life Center, 320 S. Washington, Park Ridge, IL, 60068.

Most persons in good health are eligible to donate blood, and all donors are given a health assessment prior to donation. High school students and donors under the age of 19 need to meet certain height and weight requirements. All donors must present valid photo identification, and should eat a healthy meal and drink extra water prior to donating.

Making an appointment in advance is highly recommended for several reasons. The Red Cross sends a certain number of blood drive staff, based solely on the number of advance appointments. Donors with appointments will proceed through the blood drive stations faster than those without. Appointments also help manage the overall drive, because they space out the flow of donors. If you choose not to make an appointment, walk-ins will be accepted after 10:30AM.

Every two seconds, someone in America needs blood. A single unit of blood has the capability to save the lives of 3-4 people. Our mild winter, unfortunately, does not change the fact that the need for blood is constant and ongoing. Blood is used in serious trauma, disasters, surgeries and medical procedures, cancer treatment and other care.

As always, our Blood Drive is on Palm Sunday. What an appropriate and generous way to honor this day. Remember: You can put the power of faith into action and help save a life. Please consider participating in this life-giving initiative on Sunday, April 1.

If you have additional questions or wish to make an appointment in advance, you may:
• call Dolores Vonderheide, (cell) 847-704-0210;
• call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-773-2767); or
• log on to www.redcrossblood.org.

Vive! Therapeutic
Massage "Stress Management (Hands on) Session" by Vive! Therapeutic Massage

Wellness Week presents "Stress Management (Hands On) Session-Mar. 25, 3pm

Tax season, job insecurity, family responsibilities, and ... so much to do in so little time. Are you finding that your daily commitments are strapping you down? Beware of stress and the physical and psychological effects it may have on your health. When under stress, the hormone, Cortisol, is increased. Under normal conditions this hormone is important to the proper functioning of the body. However, under stressful situations, this hormone is increased as a result of the body's "fight or flight" response to stress. If the body is not restored to its neutral level of cortisol through relaxation and stress management this high level of cortisol is sustained and over time, can be damaging to your body possibly resulting in high blood pressure and heart conditions. There are ways to control your response to stress and allowing your body to return to a state of homeostasis (balance).

To hear more about the effects of stress on the body and your muscles and to receive stress reduction tips and feel the effects of massage (free samples!), come to our Wellness Week "Stress Management (Hands On) Session" on Sunday, March 25 at 3pm at 1416 S. Canfield. Let go of the reins of stress and feel the freedom of being able to breathe more easily, relax and be in control of the daily bombardments of stress.

Oakton Breaking Ground
Oakton to Break Ground on Science and Health Careers Building
For the first time since its Des Plaines campus opened in 1980, Oakton Community College will kick off a major construction project at the site when it breaks ground on a $39 million Science and Health Careers Building on Thursday, April 5 at 10 a.m.

The 93,000-square-foot building, scheduled for completion in 2014, will launch the College’s $68.5 million five-year Facilities Master Plan, approved by the Board of Trustees in December 2010.

Science and health career education has changed radically since the 1980s and enrollment in these programs has increased. Over time, Oakton’s existing science and health career facilities have become outdated and overcrowded. The new facility meets contemporary and emerging science and health career educational standards, and will house the College’s anatomy and physiology, biology, chemistry, earth science, medical laboratory technology, nursing, physics, and physical therapy assistant programs. Located on the northeast side of the existing campus, it will feature sophisticated labs; flexible, light-filled classrooms; enhanced technology; and abundant lab preparation and storage space.

The Science and Health Careers Building will celebrate the site’s natural highlights. Offices and student study spaces will provide optimum views of the lake, while windows in the corridors and classrooms will frame the surrounding forest. Oakton will seek Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification for the facility, which will feature a number of “green” elements. The building will maximize solar heat gain and mitigate winter winds. A system that uses exhaust air to preheat and cool supply air will reduce heating Oakton Science and Health Careers Building and cooling loads, and occupancy sensors will regulate lighting. Daylight harvesting will bring natural light to 75 percent of the classrooms and the building façade will be self-shading.

The groundbreaking ceremony will take place at Oakton’s Des Plaines campus, 1600 East Golf Road, with a reception immediately following.

Gail's Weekly Chamber UPDATE

Here is your first look at the new Chamber logo! It was designed by Kymberlee Raya, Big Shot Marketing, who said the tree symbolizes growth and the green of the leaves symbolizes money – we felt that it looks like a very entrepreneurial tree! What a perfect combination to represent the Park Ridge Chamber of Commerce! And, of course, Park Ridge has been a Tree City USA awardee for 27 years!

The team that worked with Big Shot Marketing was led by Chamber board director, Joshua Nichols, Unbound Technology.

You’ll be receiving your member seals for 2012 soon – we wanted to wait until the new logo was approved.

A big thank you goes to Kymberlee Raya, Big Shot Marketing, for her creativity (and patience!).

An estimated 20 to 60 million people in the United States have dry eye. Dry eye is a chronic and progressive condition.

8 Simple Ways to Increase Comfort if you have dry eye:
1. Use artificial tears on a schedule (i.e. breakfast, lunch, dinner, and before bed).
2. Limit caffeine intake.
3. Avoid drafts and fans blowing in your face.
4. Direct automobile air conditioning away from your face.
5. Use sunglasses outdoors in dry or windy conditions.
6. Position your computer monitor below eye level and take a quick break every 1/2 hour.
7. Drink plenty of water.
8. Avoid smoking and second-hand smoke.

If you are having problems with eye dryness, we can help develop a plan for you to help keep your eyes healthy and comfortable.

Additionally, I just wanted to thank all of you for helping Sarah! We were able to collect 118 pairs of glasses. The glasses were taken to the optometry school for the students to clean and some of these students will be gong to Haiti and Guatemala on mission trips to provide eye care and glasses for people who have never had glasses before. We are still collecting glasses for next year. You can drop them off at any time.

Understanding and Helping Grieving Children
Children can grieve deeply and still grow up to become people who are living happy, productive lives. This presentation by Anne Hatcher Berenberg, Ph.D, author of "10 Steps for Parenting Your Grieving Children,” is appropriate for both professionals and parents. She will discuss how to talk with children of various developmental levels about the loss of a loved one, enabling children to have their own clear story to help them deal with the death
and hold on to positive memories. She will explore the impact grieving children and parents can have on each other, considering the ways that children express grief and react to a parent’s grief. She will identify strategies for fostering strength and building resilience in grieving children and give practical insight into how to transform youngsters’ anxiety, pain, and anger into acceptance, self-esteem and love.

All members appear twice in the directory – by category and alphabetical.
