Loretta Downs has been a companion to the dying for more than 25 years. She has sat at the bedside of family members, friends, AIDS victims, nursing home residents and hospice patients. She credits these profound experiences with teaching her how to live—and how to prepare for dying. Join us to honor National Healthcare Decisions Day and hear Loretta’s inspiring and uplifting approach to preparing for death, one choice at a time.

For more than 25 years Loretta has been a companion to AIDS victims, friends, family, hospice patients, and nursing home residents through the end
of their lives. These teachers motivated her to retire from a successful career in the Merchandise Mart to become an inspirational speaker and
writer on the subject of supporting positive experiences at the end of life. She earned a Masters Degree in Gerontology at age 60.

Loretta founded Chrysalis End-of-Life Inspirations to advocate for nursing homes and hospitals to provide private rooms for keeping vigil with the
dying. She is President of the Chicago End-of-Life Care Coalition, a Metta Institute Certified End-of-Life Care Practitioner and a Respecting
Choices Advance Care Planning Facilitator. She is a member of the Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center ethics committee, the Association
for Death Education and Counseling, the American Society on Aging, the Society for the Arts in Health Care, and the Pioneer Network.

Blood Drive April 1 at St Paul of the Cross
The Holy Family Guild of St. Paul of the Cross Church, in partnership with the American Red Cross, is sponsoring its Annual Blood Drive on Sunday, April 1, 2012. The hours are 8AM – 1:30PM in the Morello Parish Life Center, 320 S. Washington, Park Ridge, IL, 60068.

Most persons in good health are eligible to donate blood, and all donors are given a health assessment prior to donation. High school students and donors under the age of 19 need to meet certain height and weight requirements. All donors must present valid photo identification, and should eat a healthy meal and drink extra water prior to donating.

Making an appointment in advance is highly recommended for several reasons. The Red Cross sends a certain number of blood drive staff, based solely on the number of advance appointments. Donors with appointments will proceed through the blood drive stations faster than those without. Appointments also help manage the overall drive, because they space out the flow of donors. If you choose not to make an appointment, walk-ins will be accepted after 10:30AM.

Every two seconds, someone in America needs blood. A single unit of blood has the capability to save the lives of 3-4 people. Our mild winter, unfortunately, does not change the fact that the need for blood is constant and ongoing. Blood is used in serious trauma, disasters, surgeries and medical procedures, cancer treatment and other care.

As always, our Blood Drive is on Palm Sunday. What an appropriate and generous way to honor this day. Remember: You can put the power of faith into action and help save a life. Please consider participating in this life-giving initiative on Sunday, April 1.

If you have additional questions or wish to make an appointment in advance, you may:
• call Dolores Vonderheide, (cell) 847-704-0210;
• call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-773-2767); or
• log on to www.redcrossblood.org.
