At the turn of the 20th century Sears, Roebuck and Co. built a facility on the near west side of Chicago to provide for its mail-order service and office buildings. With more than 3 million square feet, it was the largest business structure in the world. The facility was state of the art for its day, as was the Power Station that provided all the energy and heat for the buildings on this 55 acre site.

These images represent both exploration and discovery of a slice in time where power was visually inherent in the massive scale of turbines and generators surrounded by the artifacts of those who serviced and operated them.

SPECIAL WORKSHOP AT NORWOOD CROSSING TO FOCUS ON CHARITABLE GIFT ANNUITIES

Have you thought about a charitable annuity to provide an income stream and a tax deduction? Charitable gift annuities typically have a much higher interest rate than many other investments, especially for older adults. Other benefits, including fixed payments and income tax deductions for itemizers, make a gift annuity a prudent option for many older people. To learn the details of this process, be sure to attend a special workshop on “Charitable Gift Annuities,” presented by Maureen McCarthy, Executive Director of Norwood Life Care Foundation. The event will take place at 10 a.m., on Mar. 8, at Norwood Crossing (Assisted Living), 6016-20 N. Nina Avenue in Chicago. Refreshments will be available. Please RSVP by calling (773) 577-5367 or email her at mmccarthy@norwoodlifecare.org.

Summit Legendary Entertainers Program Spotlights Ray Charles
Ray Charles, an American musician who was a pioneer in the genre of soul music during the 1950s will come to life in “Meet Legendary Entertainers with Jack Diamond” in the monthly musical program scheduled for Friday, March. 9 at 1:30 p.m., at The Summit of Uptown, 10 N. Summit (at Touhy) in Park Ridge. There is no charge for this program.

Diamond, a regular presenter at The Summit for almost 20 years, will trace the artist’s life and feature his music which fused rhythm and blues and gospel into his early recordings. He also helped racially integrate country and pop music during the 1960s with his crossover success on ABC Records, most notably with his Modern Sounds albums. While with ABC, Charles became one of the first African-American musicians to be given artistic control by a mainstream record company. Frank Sinatra called Charles “the only true genius in show business.”

For further information or reservations—which are required by Monday, March 5—call 847-825-1161, ext. 129. Light refreshments will be served. Those who attend are eligible for the Summit Guest Rewards Program which offers opportunities to earn rewards and prizes such as lunch or brunch for two at Summit, or VISA gift cards.
