October 22: Chamber Member News

I had 2 board meetings this past Tuesday! Both the Chamber and the Community Fund met on the 3rd Tuesday of the month but now the PRCF will start meeting on the 1st Wednesday of each month! It was a hectic and long day, but a satisfying one.

I just sent you a reminder about the Multi Chamber Expo & Taste from 3 to 6 p.m. today at Bristol Courts – last year we had 500 people come through! And its free to attend. Barton & Barton is a major sponsor so stop and say hi to them. I’ll be there taking pictures and greeting – plus looking for likely candidates for membership to our Chamber!

Remember that this Saturday is the Electronics Recycling on Saturday at Public Works. We’re ready for you! Thank you to Mike McGrath, Public Works, for hosting so rain or shine, we’re on! Also thank you to our sponsors Liberty Bank for Savings, Maine Township, and Robert Provenzano. See announcement at bottom of this email.

This event is hosted by Philip DiBelardino, Italian wine expert
and vice president of Banfi.

Philip DiBelardino is often described as a stand-up comedian passing himself off as a wine connoisseur. Well, he's both. The genial vice president of fine wines for leading US importer Banfi Vintners hosts about 100 tastings and winemaker dinners every year to promote the firm's offerings to select consumer groups. He claims that humor, usually self-effacing, captures an audience's attention-and holds it. "While listening for the next quip or joke, they absorb a lot of critical information." Filippo, as he is known in the trade, began his wine career in 1973 in his family's business, Mediterranean Imports. He held a key position with the company when it was sold a decade later and continued as a spokesman for an extensive and prestigious portfolio of European brands at Palace Brands/Dieageo until he joined Banfi in 1999.

During the month of November, Cardinal Fitness locations throughout the Midwest are hosting an annual food drive to benefit local charities in need this season. Members of the community are encouraged to bring in non-perishable food items to help support this great cause.

"As a community-based fitness center, Cardinal Fitness focuses on giving back and staying involved in our neighborhood,” said Dan Collins, Cardinal Fitness Director of Sales. “We receive an overwhelming amount of support from our members each year. It’s great to see everyone in the community work together to help make a difference.”

This year’s food drive will begin November 1 and run through the end of the month. Donated food will benefit such charities as: the Greater Chicago Food Depository, Food Bank of Northwest Indiana, and the Foodbank in Dayton, OH. Everyone is encouraged to stop by their local Cardinal Fitness location and get involved today.

For more information on Cardinal Fitness’s efforts and how you can help, please visit cardinalfitness.com. Cardinal Fitness fans can follow us online at facebook.com/cardinalfitness and at twitter.com/cardinalfitness

I would appreciate it if you would forward this to your friends and neighbors who may be affected. And
also remind them they can go the www.parkridgemayor.com and sign up to be on the e-mail list themselves.

Many of you have heard of a proposal to erect cell phone towers at
Northeast Park and South Park. A number of people believe this was
planned by the City and are upset that they were not involved in the
decision-making process. In fact, the cell phone proposal originated
with the Park Ridge Park District which is a completely separate
governmental body over which the City exerts no control. The cell
towers would be erected on Park District property pursuant to a
contract between the cell phone company and the Park District.

However, the cell phone company and the Park District are still
required to go through the regular zoning process, in this case, a
request for a special use permit. The public hearing for the cell
tower special use permit application will commence in front of the
City's Planning and Zoning Commission next Tuesday, October 26 at
730pm in the City Council Chambers at City Hall, I will not use the
space to try to explain the complexities of that process or whether
there are any federal laws which impact on that process. The bottom
line is that the Commission will hear from the applicant and any
resident who wishes to speak on the issue and will then vote on making
a recommendation to the City Council. I have asked our City Attorney
to be prepared to address the legal issues at that meeting.

Meanwhile, I spoke with a member of the Park District Board who
alerted me to the fact that the Board is having a meeting THIS
Thursday, October 21 at 730pm at Maine Park, 2701 West Sibley. The
cell towers issue is not on the Board's meeting agenda. However, like
City Council meetings, there is a potion of the meeting set aside for
comments from the public. Anyone who wishes to express his or her
opinion about this issue directly to the Park Board should take this
opportunity to do so.

I hope this helps to clear things up a little bit.

The City of Park Ridge and the Park Ridge Chamber of Commerce will host a one day collection for the recycling of electronics on Saturday, October 23, 2010, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Public Works Service Center, 400 Busse Highway. Thanks to our major sponsors: Liberty Bank for Savings, Maine Township, and Highway Commissioner Robert Provenzano!
