Gail's Weekly Chamber UPDATE

Lian, my 10 year old daughter, skated in 4 performances of the ice show at Oakton this weekend and I worked the Electronics Recycling Event. Doing those 2 things was all I did this weekend! Yesterday was my veg-out day!
We had a great turnout for the Women in Business luncheon here at the Nonprofit Center last Friday. Our keynote speaker, Debbie Harris, TriPilates, discussed how to “Be Good to Yourself – Mind, Body and Spirit” and then she demonstrated and then had us do some simple Pilates movements.
Panino’s Pizzeria catered our ladies’ luncheon with their wonderful Chicken Walnut Salad, Caprese Pasta, breadsticks, fabulous desserts and beverages! Thank you for the fabulous lunch! They also just celebrated their 1st anniversary and gave away free pizza on Saturday!
Electronics Recycling Day, last Saturday in the parking lot of the Senior Center was wildly successful! Cars were backed up onto Touhy and down Western – we averaged 100 cars per hour. And the rains stayed away for the entire day!
The event was hosted by the Chamber in partnership with the Park Ridge Park District. Special kudos to Liberty Bank for Savings as the major sponsor and to Kane Connell as the chairman of the event.
I will probably forget some people and if I do, just let me know because there were so many volunteers and so many who came through and not everyone checked in with me. About 400 vehicles in all were relieved of their electronics. We had the guys from the Sheriff Work Alternative Program (SWAP) for the 3rd year and that’s always a lot of muscle!
High School students from 3 Maine schools came in droves! They were hard workers and full of energy! Boy Scouts, Rotary, Kiwanis, Maine Township, Chamber members (Kane Connell, Wes Davis, Rick Pucci, Ann Witek, Dick Barton, Tom Dombro, Jo Ann Arnswald to name a few), and even residents with no affiliation to any organization except a dedication to the Earth came to help out throughout the event.
Special thanks to Mike McGrath, from the City of Park Ridge, who drove the forklift, made the signage, brought the barricades, tables and coolers of ice, and hauled away the trash - this would not have been the success it was without Mike McGrath.
Also, thank you to Dick Barton, Barton & Barton, who came early and stayed late – and worked hard the whole time. Tony Tripp from the Youth Campus also deserves a special shout-out for staying to help clean up long after others had left.
Thank you to the sponsors of the event who underwrote the cost of the event and to new member Spuntino’s who provided pizza to feed the volunteering masses and Dominick’s Foods for donating the cases of water:

Gail's Weekly Chamber UPDATE

Guess what? (I’m so excited!) I bought a car from Eric Nelson at Nelson Automotive (www.heycars.com)! It’s a ’99 little black Mercedes convertible sports car with less than 35K miles on it! This is the 3rd car our family has purchased from him over the past 5 years or so - you’d be amazed at the low prices of the 50 vehicles on his lot! Eric will treat you right!
I went to UIUC for Moms Weekend and got to spend time with Dirk. It was wonderful! I baked a Chocolate Kahlua Cake for the Moms’ bake-off but Dirk and his roommates declared it a winner and didn’t want to share it…’I coulda been a contender!!!’

There were about 130 people who attended the Multi Chamber Networking Luncheon with Rosemont, Mt. Prospect & Des Plaines Chambers at the Hyatt Regency O'Hare last Wednesday.
The speaker, Margaret Stender, President & CEO for the Chicago Sky/WNBA, discussed the team’s new home court, Allstate Arena, and about the players themselves and introduced the coaches. It was fun and fascinating!
Every attendee received a goody bag that included 2 tickets for the opening game! If you aren’t going to use your tickets, bring them by the Chamber and we’ll pass them out to those that want to go (I could use one more ticket!)
Thank you to the Hyatt for hosting with a fabulously delicious lunch!

This Friday is the last Friday of April! The Women in Business this month is a lunchtime meeting to be held here at the Chamber. Panino’s will cater it.
Debbie Harris, TriPilates, is our keynote speaker who’s topic is “Be Good to Yourself – Mind, Body and Spirit”. I’ve heard Debbie speak before and she’s wonderful!

Gail's Weekly Chamber UPDATE

I’m going to UIUC this weekend for Moms’ Weekend to see Dirk (who is graduating next month and in the market for a job in Aerospace Engineering).
And Lian and I rode our bikes yesterday for a few miles, played ball, and I took her ice skating. I also had a few ladies over for knitting on Saturday evening so it was a full and fun weekend – hope your’s was too!
From the City of Park Ridge:
In light of the tragic plane crash which killed Polish President Lech Kaczynski and many other leaders of the Polish government and business community, and out of respect for the thousands of Park Ridge residents who are of Polish heritage, Mayor Dave Schmidt ordered on Sunday that the City’s flag be flown at half mast through Saturday, April 17, the day of President Kaczynski’s funeral. Mayor Schmidt also declared that the City will observe an official period of mourning for the victims of the disaster through that date. The American flag will remain at full mast until President Obama orders otherwise.

We have all the tickets for the May 14th Cubs vs Pirates game (here at the Chamber) so stop by and pick up your tickets.
Because we sold out for that game, we got another offer for Wednesday, May 12, against the Florida Marlins at 1:20 – just $15 per ticket!
Park Ridge Chamber’s member, Ben Wilson, Falkor Group, moderated the monthly Microsoft Tech Forum hosted by the Chamber on Thursday, April 8, to a crowd of almost 30! A full service IT consultancy, Falkor provides business with options to understand how technology can help improve office productivity and systems reliability.
Attendees at the TechForum received a firsthand look at how Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2008, Windows 7 Professional, Office Small Business 2007 work together to help the business save time, get organized, stay productive anywhere, and protect data to enable the business to spend more time growing the business.
Microsoft reps were on hand to answer questions as were several IT firms, including partners from the Falkor Group. Microsoft donated a camera, Visio software, and an xbox 360 Platinum game for the business card raffle.
The continental breakfast was catered by All on the Road Catering & Bakery. Event attendees may be eligible to receive up to $600.00* to be used towards deployment services from a Microsoft partner of choice to assist with installation when used in conjunction with a purchase of Windows Small Business Server 2008, Windows 7 Professional, and/or Office Small Business 2007.

Last Friday was the Grand Opening & Ribbon Cutting at D’Agostino’s Pizza & Pub, 742 W. Higgins Road.
Mayor Dave Schmidt, Chamber Board, Chamber Ambassadors and other Chamber members were all present the festivities: delicious food and networking at this new restaurant in town. It was fun for the whole family with balloons and face painting!
Please visit them – just east of Cumberland with plenty of parking!
Over 100 people are signed up – and I can still get you in but call now! Great Lunch, free parking! Don’t miss out on this great opportunity to network with people from the Rosemont Chamber and the Des Plaines Chamber.
April 14, Wednesday, 11:30am – 1:30am Multi Chamber Networking Luncheon with Rosemont, Mt. Ok, I’m still pushing the Red Geraniums because it is the OFFICIAL flower of Park Ridge!

Will you buy a flat of red geraniums from the Chamber? Let me know as I’d like to get as many orders as possible before placing an order. I may not place an order if I don’t get a good pre-sale since I don’t want to be stuck with lots of flats that I have to tend to.

Especially since this is the City’s 100 year anniversary of being the City of Park Ridge and it’s the 50th year of the City’s flag.

By the way, did you know that 2011 is the Chamber’s 75th Anniversary? Don’t I get diamonds for that???

Here are some more ideas that need a champion:

1. A Legislative Forum
2. A Health Care Forum
3. A Community Garden which would be for the entire community of Park Ridge – the owner of the empty lot across from Jewel gave tentative approval!
4. St. Paul of the Cross Sunday Night Suppers – volunteering to make and/or serve meals for 100 hungry people?

3rd Annual North Shore Women’s Conference – A Great Opportunity for Your Business!
