Gail's Weekly Chamber UPDATE

Happy Casimir Pulaski Day and Happy Monday,

Casimir Pulaski Day is a holiday observed in Illinois on the first Monday of every March to commemorate Casimir Pulaski, a Revolutionary War cavalry officer born March 4, 1747 in Poland as Kazimierz PuĊ‚aski. He is known for his contributions to the U.S. military in the American Revolution by training its soldiers and cavalry. (source: Wikipedia)

For those following my stage career, we’ve done 4 shows and will perform this Thursday, Friday and Saturday at Washington School. Tickets are still available for Thursday and Friday! I play a tap-dancing, singing Karen Carpenter Ant…(it’s a musical comedy!)

Thank you to Kris Hansen and Bethany Terrace in Morton Grove for hosting the February Business After Hours last week! What a nice spread of food and refreshments they served! What a beautiful place to spend rehab or long term care!

Thank you to Susan Frangos, Higher Level Wellness, who was the keynote speaker last Friday at the Women in Business Breakfast held at The Summit of Uptown. Susan’s topic was ‘Stop Singing the Sugar Blues - Learn how to deconstruct your cravings’. Very interesting! If you need help cutting out sugar, call Susan at 847-361-6185.
The Summit of Uptown put out a delicious breakfast buffet of eggs, bacon, sausage, pancakes, oatmeal, pastries, fresh fruit – all that and the networking and the great topic for just $10!
Thank you to our co-chairs, Marta Hoover, Copy Set Center and Karen Larsen, Order My Gift who set up the networking event for the 30+ ladies who came.
This week the Entrepreneurial Knowledge Group (EKG) will meet at the Chamber office on Thursday, March 5, from 10 to 11:30 a.m.
EKG meets once a month and is co-chaired by Lynda Tourloukis, You Can Say Yes!, and Carol Simantz, Catalyst Marketing – Public Relations, Inc.
Business owners get together to discuss common issues and pool resources. Jim Cone, WSI, developed a website for the EKG: http://www.entrepreneursofparkridge.com/

March 10 is the deadline for getting an ad into the April newsletter. Ads start at $25 per month and if you pay for a full year, its only $250 so you get 2 months for free!
Cathy Janus, National Sales Director for Marc Promotional Products, sells ads for our newsletter and can be reached at 773-401-4556. Thanks, Cathy – she does this as part of the Communications Committee!
Mini-Expos
Showcase your business with a mini-expo at the monthly networking luncheon! You can set up a display about your business and provide samples, brochures and coupons for your products and services. During the scheduled networking time before and after the meeting, you will have the opportunity to discuss your business with Chamber members. You will also have 1 minute to introduce yourself at the podium during the meeting. The cost of the Mini-Expo is $25. We can have up to 4 per luncheon.

The next Chamber networking luncheon will be on the 3rd Wednesday this month – March 18 – at the Park Ridge Country Club from 11:30 to 1:30.
Mayor Frimark and Alderman Schmidt will discuss their views of the economic issues within Park Ridge. I’ll be the moderator and expect it to be a lively debate!
And, of course, the food at the Country Club is always a gourmet meal!
$25 with reservations by Monday, March 16. $30 after Monday.
We have 2 available spots for the Mini-Expo – email me if you want a table for $25.

Chamber workshop will be held at Comfort Inn in Des Plaines on March 25.
Topic is ‘With a Little Help From my Friends: Best Practices & Critical Strategies for Business Prosperity in 2009 .
Here is an overview: “Our current economic crisis is hurting everyone and not everyone will get bailed out. Business owners and business leaders face the challenge of making the necessary changes and adjustments to survive. We will conduct a highly interactive 3 hour workshop that will provide attendees with ideas and strategies of how to prosper in 2009. The workshop will combine the presentation of the lastest Vistage International research findings on Best Practices, group discussion and individual planning the group feedback support.”
Vistage International, the world’s leading chief executive organization, and its affiliates have more than 14,000 members in 16 countries. Vistage members generate nearly $300 billion in annual revenue and have more than 2/1 million employees around the world. Vistage is dedicated to increasing the effectiveness and enhancing the lives of chief executives. Member companies are better run and grow their revenues, on average, at twice the percentage growth rate after joining Vistage.
$40 for members; $50 for non members. Full hot deluxe breakfast included.
******************
Catherine Johns comes back April 29 for the complete presentation of what we got just half hour of in the Women in Business – “Creating a Powerful Presence”. She was such a hit that I booked her for the 3 hour workshop. $40 for members; $50 for non members. Full hot deluxe breakfast included. Details to follow.

See the end of this email for the list of who will appear in the guide. If you don’t see your name, then you probably have not renewed.
Platinum members will be on the front cover! It’s only $300 more to upgrade to Platinum and it includes 8 lunches! It’s the best value in town! Last year we had 3 Platinum members and this year we have 9 so far!
55 of you took the golf survey and overwhelmingly want to continue with the golf outing so the planning committee is full steam ahead! The date is June 24 – Wed – and it will be at the Chevy Chase Country Club for the 3rd year in a row.

Would you like to help out on the planning committee? We need extra hands. Also, we need sponsors and golfers and silent auction items!

Thank you to all who responded to the survey! Details to follow but please mark your calendar for Wednesday, June 24, for another fabulous event!

The Chamber has interest in starting a second leads and referral on the 4th Tuesday of each month starting with March 24. So far,
Adam D. Paoli, CLTC, Investment Adviser Representative,
John Hancock Financial Network, has offered to kick it off. Amy Sullivan, CPA, is also joining the group but we’re looking for all other industries!
I love how Park Ridge comes together as a community to recycle cell phones and support our troops!
District 64 has a Green Team at each elementary school and the schools collected 113 cell phones for soldiers and dropped them off at the Chamber.
To date, we’ve shipped a total of 303 cell phones for recycling so that 303 phone cards (60 minutes each) are sent to soldiers overseas to call home to loved ones and talk for free for 303 hours! Isn’t that wonderful?
For more information on this worthwhile program, go to www.cellphonesforsoldiers.com

Have you been to Tasty Pup yet? Not only do they have great hot dogs (my daughter’s personal favorite) but they have great chicken sandwiches. I was there last week!
Curt Edlund of Larsen & Edlund (attorneys) and Fran Hook-Hume of Maine Center both had their pictures in the the Pioneer Press last week on page 17 for cooking a spaghetti dinner with the Kiwanis and raised over $8K “to support area social service organizations that provide programs and resources for children.”
The Maine Community Youth Assistance Foundation met with Congress a couple weeks back to discuss the national agenda on teen substance abuse prevention, intervention and treatment. Margaret Polovchak (director) was also pictured on page 17 along with U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky.
Congratulations to new member, Tom Canale, partner in The McTigue Financial Group! Read on for why:
Best Place to Work #3 McTigue Financial

By: Allison Riggio March 02, 2009

Why it's a Best Place to Work: Lifelong learning is the philosophy at this company, and staff at all levels of McTigue Financial are regularly evaluated for areas that might need improvement. A new hire might benefit from personal finance lessons, veteran employees might need to fine-tune business writing skills, or the whole office might need a training session on work-life balance. Managing Partner John McTigue says the company is happy to bring in outside assistance because it promotes professional and personal growth. "It might be the biggest gift a firm can give someone," he says. http://www.chicagobusiness.com/cgi-bin/mag/department.pl?id=126
