Rotary The Park Ridge Rotary Club and The Park Ridge Chamber of Commerce Hold Combined Meeting
The Park Ridge Rotary Club and Park Ridge Chamber of Commerce had their 2nd Annual Combined lunch meeting at the Summit of Park Ridge on February 16, 2011. Diane Forsythe, President of Park Ridge Rotary, and Gail Haller, Executive Director of the Chamber of Commerce, were co-chairpersons. Carol Pandak of Rotary International was the key note speaker and spoke about Rotary International’s “End Polio Now” campaign.
As many of us are aware, polio has been eradicated in US for decades but it still is an ongoing threat in some parts of the world. Rotary has taken on the goal of completely eliminating polio world wide. This is accomplished by immunizing children in the few third world countries where polio still exists. Until polio is completely eradicated an outbreak is just one airplane ride away from reemerging anywhere in the world.
The Rotary International Foundation recently received a donation of $ 100,000 from a member of the Park Ridge Rotary Club. The donation was designated for use on the “End Polio Now” campaign. With this donation, 500,000 more children will receive the polio vaccine.
The Park Ridge Chamber of Commerce is a growing dynamic organization of local businesses with many new members. At their recent VIP dinner, attended by more than 200 people, Park Ridge Mayor Dave Schmidt installed the new slate of officers and Dave Donovan passed the Presidential gavel to Ms. Jackie Matthews of Rainbow Hospice.

Rotary again! The Park Ridge Rotary Club Donates “Coats for Kids” to The Center of Concern.
The Park Ridge Rotary Club donated 30 “Coats for Kids”, just in time for the recent extremely cold weather, to the Park Ridge based non-profit organization The Center of Concern. The Center will distribute the coats to needy children in the area. Even with this donation, there is still a waiting list of kids who need coats. This is the second annual “Coats for Kids” program that the Park Ridge Rotary Club has teamed up with the Center to help kids.
The Center of Concern, located on Northwest Hwy in Park Ridge, is not-for-profit agency offering social services to local area people in need. They have 14 professionals and over 200 dedicated volunteers on staff.
The Park Ridge Rotary Club is a volunteer group of business and community leaders to help others locally, nationally, and internationally. Rotary International has over 1.2 million members in over 200 hundred countries worldwide.

Macular degeneration is the leading cause of visual impairment and blindness in the older population. According to the CDC (Center of Disease Control and Prevention), an estimated 2 million people have macular degeneration, which is expected to increase to almost 3 million by 2020. Meanwhile, another 7.3 million people are at substantial risk for vision loss from macular degeneration.

It may be possible for patients to decrease their risk of macular degeneration by following a plan that emphasizes a diet containing foods high in omega-3 fatty acids (eating fish i.e.salmon), lutein, and zeaxanthin (eating green vegetables, especially leafy green), following a healthy lifestyle (exercising, not smoking, try not to be obese), and protecting the eyes from the damaging effects of blue light (UV).
Nutritional supplements such as vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc and omega 3 have been shown effective at reducing the risk of macular degeneration. Nutritional supplements such as lutein and zeaxanthin have been shown to prevent macular degeneration. Results from the Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) showed that high levels of antioxidants and zinc reduce the risk of advanced macular degeneration and its associated vision loss. As with all supplements, various nutrients and vitamins may be contraindicated due to an underlying systemic condition (like heart disease and diabetes), so please ask your doctor first.
