"Gail's Weekly Chamber UPDATE"

“March winds and April showers Bring forth May flowers.”
On this date in 1889, the Eiffel Tower in Paris officially opened!
Tomorrow is April Fools Day (and my son, Dirk’s birthday!).

FYI - We sold out on the Cubs tickets and then got 25 more tickets and now have just 13 left at $18 each. The Northwestern Game will be more expensive this year than it was last year – our cost rose significantly. Would you still be interested if the ticket price is $40? If we cannot get enough interest, we may have to let this one drop from our lineup. I’m also thinking of another play so stay tuned!

Thank you to those who have renewed their 2011 Chamber membership. For those who have elected not to renew, this will be your last eblast unless you contact me. Our by-laws state that after 90 days past due, I need to delete non-paying members. Just a reminder that only dues paying members appear on our website and in the Community Guide (which goes to every house in Park Ridge on May 19). Email me back and let me know if you’re renewing (and if you’re not, please let me know why not). Thx.

Each Tuesday evening during the month of April, catch Park Ridge Chamber members Susan Baushke and Steven Arvanites of Petite Opera Productions on ATT Uverse!
The duo recently appeared on the cable show “Stand By with Marie Conenna”, promoting Petite Opera’s upcoming original spooferetta production, Al Fresco – Life through Opera-Colored Glasses. The opera spoof, which is a cross between opera and improvisation, features famous opera music by Mozart, Puccini and others, a new story and script by Susan Baushke, and new English lyrics by Susan Baushke, Steven Arvanites, Janene Bergen (all Chamber members) and H.R.T. Guillen. This comedy is set in Chicago, and spoofs popular people, events and common characters in and around Chicago. May 6-7, 13-14, 20-21 at 7:30 PM and May 8, 15, and 22 at 4:00 PM performances will take place in Park Ridge at Mary Wilson House Beyer Auditorium, part of the St. Mary’s Episcopal Church campus, 306 S Prospect, Park Ridge. Call 847-553-4442 to reserve tickets, or visit www.petiteopera.org to purchase via credit card.
“Stand By with Marie Conenna” airs every Tuesday evening during April (Apr 5, 12, 19, 26) at 7:30 PM. It will air on local cable station 19 in Highland Park, Deerfield and Winnetka, but ATT Uverse customers can also find it on their viewing guide.

PARK RIDGE HISTORICAL SOCIETY PROGRAM: 2 PM, Sunday, April 10, 2011 to be held at the Park Ridge Nonprofit Center, 720 Garden Street. The Summit of Uptown Brings Popular TV Host for May 12 Benefit Luncheon in Park Ridge
The Summit of Uptown, 10 N. Summit Avenue, Park Ridge, is bringing Phil Ponce, host of “Chicago Tonight”, the popular weeknight news and entertainment show on WTTW-TV, Channel 11, to speak on "A Report from the 50-yard Line" at a fundraising luncheon on Thursday, May 12, at noon.
Tickets for the event are $20; $10 for seniors 65 and older. Because federal funding for public broadcasting—both radio and television—is in danger of being cut, forcing an expected 100+ stations to close their doors, a portion of the price of each ticket benefits public television and WTTW-TV.
In addition, The Summit of Uptown will match the donated portion to increase the total contribution. “We are pleased to bring Phil to The Summit and give local fans of his popular program and public television a chance to hear from him,” says Marc Dennison, Executive Director of The Summit. “We are also supporting public television in the process.”
Ponce's topic is gleaned from his nightly role on the flagship show of America's most watched PBS station, Chicago Tonight. He gives personal insights into the political, business and social trends affecting the Chicago area. Attendees will enjoy his
off-the-record observations about the people, stories and issues that are making headlines.
Longtime Chicago area residents will remember John Callaway, the popular Chicago broadcast journalist, as the original host of “Chicago Tonight” which began in 1984. In 1999, Ponce succeeded Callaway as host of the program which reports primarily on local news and showcases artists and events.

Guests are encouraged to arrive early or stay late for tours of the newly renovated Summit of Uptown which offers independent and assisted living options. Parking is available in the Uptown City garage across the street. For a list of other entertaining events at The Summit, visit www.summitofuptown.com .

"Gail's Weekly Chamber UPDATE"

Everyone has left town for spring break! Well, except for you and me! It’s like a ghost town – let me know if you have anything special going on this week during spring break for those still in town. I’m heading to Chico’s because their Friends & Family sale this week gives you 15% off your entire purchase if you mention this email – and the store is packed with new items for spring and summer!

Also, did you know the library will give you a museum pass for a week if you have a library card? Just check in at the Childrens Department. I got a pass for Brookfield Zoo so I’m taking my daughter, Lian, this week.
Women in Business Panel: Tips from Successful Women! The Park Ridge Chamber of Commerce held its monthly Women in Business networking meeting last Friday at the Park Ridge Nonprofit Center, 720 Garden Street.

A panel of three successful women moderated by Jay Crowley, real estate broker with Keller Williams, included Jo Ann Arnswald, MB Financial Bank; Lisa Smith, LNM Consulting; and Suzann Wilson, Beadphoria. Each woman discussed her favorite marketing tips, tools and suggestions; what worked and what didn't. Each agreed that great customer service, word of mouth referrals and their Chamber memberships contributed to their successes.

Usually a breakfast meeting, this one was a luncheon which was catered by Panino's Pizzeria who served Chicken Gorgonzola Salad, Chicken Walnut Salad, Pizzas, Assorted Desserts and Beverages. For catering information, call Panino's at 847.823.3450.

The event was filmed by Emmett Talkington, E&J Digital Media, who is making a Chamber video to post on the Chamber’s website. For information about digital media, call 847-983-4300, or visit www.eandadigitalmedia.com or email eanda@eandadigitalmedia.com. E & A Digital Media Co. specializes in all areas of video and photo production.

Mike Luehr is the Chair; Bill Pretzer is the Vice-Chair; and I’m the Secretary.

As you spend your money, please remember to spend it with Chamber members first. Don’t forget about all the services you use and please check our website or call us for referrals. The Chamber only gives referrals out to Chamber members.
Need a vacation? Call Nadya at Tanya Travel. When you book your dental temps, think Dental Placement Auxiliary in Park Ridge. Are you planning for retirement? I use Rick Pucci personally but, again, there are other great financial planners to choose from.
All your insurances should be local – I use Dave and Pete Donovan for my home and auto, Frimark Keller for Chamber, but there are several other great ones to choose from in the Chamber.
Banking? We have great banks! I personally use MB Financial (4% checking!) but I love all our other banks too! Each offers something wonderful!
Shell Auto on Greenwood and Touhy is the only gas station in the Chamber and I always fill up there. Our favorite electrician is Sklena Electric and the only one in the Chamber. My daughter is enrolled in StageCoach Theatre School and takes ice skating through the Park District. My son works at Houlihan’s.
Eric Nelson, Nelson Automotive, just took my scooter (Yamaha Jog) to sell and then detailed my son’s car (and you know I bought my M-B SLK230 from Eric!). I’ve also use McGarry Auto and Express Auto to fix cars in addition to Nelson Automotive.
TeaLula is our only tea shop, WineStyles is our only wine specialty store, Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory is our only specialty chocolate store, South Park Cleaners is our only dry cleaners.
Do me a favor, if there is a business you use in Park Ridge that is not a Chamber member, ask them to join and give them my card.
I know I’ll get in trouble with the hundreds of Chamber members I didn’t mention so please don’t email me just to scold me! I just want you to think about supporting not only stores but service businesses that may not have store fronts because we still spend our money buying these services, goods, products, and more.
Thank you for your support!

They will place stickers on packages of alcoholic beverages that read “Warning: It is illegal 1) to provide alcohol to a person under age 21 and 2) for a minor to use a fake ID.”
The event reminds adults that providing alcohol to minors is illegal, unhealthy, and dangerous. MCYAF and its partners hope the message will deter adults who otherwise might buy, sell and provide alcohol to teens or simply look the other way when it comes to teenagers drinking.

Kiwanis One Day
Kiwanis is a global organization comprised of members of every age who are dedicated to changing the world one child and one community at a time. The motto of Kiwanis International is “Serving the Children of the World”.
Kiwanis One Day has become one of the most important days on the Kiwanis calendar. Each year, Kiwanis clubs around the world join in a day of service to their community. In 2011, Kiwanis One Day is April 2nd.
The Park Ridge Kiwanis Clubs will be joining forces on April 2nd to clean up some area roadways and make our community cleaner – better –safer than the rest!
The Kiwanis Morning Club will be cleaning Riverside Drive from Oakton to Dee Rd, and Touhy from Dee Rd to the City-limits. The Kiwanis Noon Club will be cleaning Dee Rd from Devon to Higgins. Both clubs will then proceed to Dee Rd for the 1-mile stretch from Talcott to Devon, by Maine South H.S.
For more information about the Park Ridge Kiwanis programs, becoming a member, or your support of upcoming events, please contact Jeff Sorensen at (847) 812-7447.

How can I get rid of the weeds on my lawn without using toxic chemicals?
One approach is to simply pull them out. Many tools, such as Grandpa's Weeder and the Weed Bully, can be used for this.
Alternatives: Pour boiling water mixed with white vinegar on the weeds. Or buy a lawn torch, such as Weed Dragon of Hot Spotter, which attaches to a propane tank and can be used to burn weeds-BUT use it only when the lawn is wet to avoid fire.
To prevent weeds from growing: Use corn gluten in early spring-it is an effective preemergent (a natural nontoxic herbicide) and is available at garden stores.

The statue was originally sponsored by Liberty Bank as part of the 2010 Promise of Park Ridge public art project and was displayed in Hodges Park in front of the Park Ridge City Hall. Gail's Weekly Chamber UPDATE

Spring is here and its raining as it should be!
Here is the press release I sent to the papers:
Park Ridge Chamber Asks Residents to Please Shop Locally
Although new businesses continue to move into Park Ridge, it’s sad when a local independent closes its doors permanently as Dominic’s Kitchen Store did recently. Many of our local merchants are struggling with slow sales, higher overhead, and increased competition from Internet sales and big box stores. But as a resident you can do your part to help them survive and thrive by shopping locally. When you do, more money is kept in the community.

Support the people who support you. Local business owners donate more to local charities than non-local owners. The merchants are asked daily for freebies, contributions, gift baskets, gift cards for local groups, charities, schools, sports teams, and more. People get mad when an owner turns them down and often threatens ‘to tell friends and family not to shop here’. Our local merchants often give more than they can really afford to give. Nonprofits receive an average of 350% more support from local business owners than they do from non-locally owned businesses.

The unique character of Park Ridge is defined in large part by the businesses that reside here, and that plays a big factor in overall satisfaction with where we live and the value of our homes. Also, locally-owned businesses often purchase from other local businesses which helps grow other businesses as well as the local tax base.

The environmental impact is reduced when you shop locally because small local businesses are much friendlier to a community than out of town shopping malls. They contribute less to sprawl, congestion, habitat loss and pollution and reduces our carbon footprint. Because small local businesses are the largest employers nationally, the more jobs we have in town, the less people are going to have to commute which means more recreational time, less traffic and pollution.

Local businesses often hire local people – our sons and daughters, spouses, and retirees. In a local business, you know the person behind the counter, and they know you. They have a deep understanding of the products they’re selling, and they take time to serve their customers. Many business owners live in Park Ridge and are invested in the community's welfare and future. They’re not likely to pull up stakes and move out of town, taking their jobs with them. But, sadly some are forced to do just that.

Yes, buying at a small, local store may cost a little bit more because of their rent or they don’t buy in the quantities of a Wal-Mart – but considering all the above reasons, won’t you please stay in Park Ridge and spend your money here? If you can spend just $50 at three stores each month, you’ll contribute to the success of Park Ridge. Is there another store you’ll miss if it goes out of business? Stop in. Buy something. Your purchases are what keeps our local businesses alive. It starts with you.

Gail's Weekly Chamber UPDATE

Happy Pi Day (as you know, Pi is 3.14 which is today’s date!),

And, so, eat pie today!
For our board meeting tomorrow, there are 10 new member applications for approval! I’m very excited. Did you know that our Ambassadors visit each new member to welcome them to the Chamber and explain Chamber benefits to them?
Dan O’Brien won this feature at the luncheon last week:

Northsouth Masonry and Tuckpointing Inc. was established in 1996 and is based in Park Ridge but also does work in Chicago and surrounding suburbs. Services include grinding and tuckpointing, chimney, parapet and general masonry rebuilding, caulking, chemical cleaning, interior basement masonry repairs, concrete repairs, glass block and chimney flue liners. Many local homes and business have had roofing and siding redone as a result of last year’s hail damage and I notice many chimneys also need repairs. You may have been told this by your inspector or contractor. Please contact us for an estimate and check us out on www.angieslist.com/companyconnect.

Gail's Weekly Chamber UPDATE

Happy Kazimierz Pulaski Day,
Benjamin Franklin invited Kazimierz Michal Waclaw Wiktor Pulaski, a renowned Polish war hero, to train troops in the Battle of Brandywine. While there, he reportedly saved the life of George Washington in 1777. This heroic deed elevated Pulaski to brigadier general, a position that allowed him to create his own skilled cavalry. Fast forward 200 years: Chicago is the second-largest Polish-populated city in the world (you read that right, larger than most cities in Poland). In 1977, the state of Illinois enacted a law to acknowledge Pulaski Day on the first Monday in March in order to celebrate his birthday.
Dino V from the Pickwick told me that today is the first day of Lent for the Greek Orthodox. The Pickwick Theatre is hosting the Chamber luncheon on April 13 so we were meeting to discuss details today.
The Beatles Night at the Community Church was fun! So was the musical, Hamalot, at Washington School!
Warning! From Police just now! Be on the Lookout: for suspicious people in the rear of residences. There have been 2 bonafide forced entry burglaries today.

Be on the lookout for suspicious people in and around residences. There have been two incidents today of forcible entry (rear entrances kicked open) burglaries in the 800 block of S. Prairie and 900 S. Block of Hamlin.

The most recent incident occurred within the last hour. If you see any suspicious activity, contact the police via 911 immediately.
For full details, go to https://local.nixle.com/alert/4663146/?sub_id=509990.

Chamber works with Police on new Program:
Caught Being Good! The Park Ridge Chamber of Commerce and the Park Ridge Police Department are sponsoring a “Caught Being Good Program” in 2011 to reward Park Ridge residents and visitors of all ages for good safety practices such as:

- Wearing a helmet at the Park District Skate Park
- Wearing a seat belt while driving
- Correctly installing a child’s car seat
- Helping a senior to cross the street
- Protecting a child from traffic harm

We are asking Chamber Members if they would help us reward our citizens when they are “Caught Being Good”!

LIN-MAR Motors is moving! LIN-MAR Motors plans to celebrate its 53rd. year of business in Morton Grove in a new home at the northeast corner of Oakton and Austin.
LIN-MAR President, Ronald Lundin, closed on the property at 5940 Oakton on Monday, February 28th. Lundin said, “There are a number of advantages to the move. We will be able to use the space more efficiently for production purposes. Additionally, the new location will offer more convenient customer parking, and will be more energy efficient.”
Lundin predicts that the move will take about 2 months and said that the current location at 7860 N. Lehigh will remain open for business, as usual, during the transition.
He continued, “The equipment and materials we currently use are state of art and exceed EPA requirements. We will move them to the new shop and install the most advanced water born paint system in the interest of making our body shop green operation.”
“Of course, we plan a grand opening, which we expect to take place in June; the final date is yet to be announced. Like our open houses of past years, we will have entertainment, a car show, and lots of food and refreshments. There is no charge and everyone is welcome. It’s our way of saying thanks to the community.”

Business News from the Library Selling to Generation Y

Who is generation Y? They can be classified as people who have been born after the 1980’s who use extensive technology in their everyday lives. For this reason, Gen Y makes a much different type of consumer than Gen X before them. They have grown up in a culture of pure consumerism and see buying as a part of life. Their use of media makes for more opportunities to advertise and sell to them.

For more information on targeting your business toward this group of consumers, you might want to read some of these books available at the Park Ridge Public Library.

Money Smart Week programs coming in April!
Money Smart Week is April 2-9 this year and the library will be hosting two programs in conjunction with it on Tuesday April 5 and Wednesday April 6. More information will be in the March News For Businesses e-newsletter and the Library’s March/April newsletter of events.
